NSF Scrub Club - 1 views

  •
Website that teaches proper handwashing for elementary children.
  •
For those of you who teach health and wellness at the elementary level, this is a really cool website -- the "Scrub Club" teaches proper handwashing techniques. You can use hand sanitizers all you want, but the best way to prevent disease is still good old soap and water.

Discovery Educator Network - 0 views

  •
    STAR educators program.
  •
If your school has united streaming and you do things to teach others about how to use this resource, you can become a STAR educator. Here is the application process and let me know, I'll be happy to help you. I have an ulterior motive on this one -- if I help recruit a STAR by December 1st, I can get a mythbusters or Deadliest catch DVD and really would love to give this to my son. Like all of you, I'm scrambling this year on Christmas to slash the budget and still do great things. (Hey, some of you might want to give my book for Christmas ;-) So, if you decide to join and want a little help, let me know. And if you do so, let me know and I can get credit and get a DVD -- my son LOVES mythbusters!! I've been a STAR educator for some time now, and it is another great networking program. They also have their summer institutes. They have a wealth of great resources and UNITED STREAMING is my teacher's FAVORITE classroom subscription that we have.

Opportunity for teachers to become involved in a global collaborative project by being a judge. Definitely a best practice to review.
  •
This fascinating project needs judges (oh and horizon still does too!) -- hat tip to David Warlick for this link. The student web site entries are due in tomorrow (April 2) for the 2008 competition, and ThinkQuest needs people to judge these entries. To be a judge, you must be employed as a teacher or have a minimum of five years experience in the field of education; be proficient in the English language; and be able to, and have the time to evaluate and score websites based on the provided criteria.

Wikis in the Classroom - 0 views

This wiki presentation from k12 online a few years back is still current and on this page you'll find a low res and high res video as well as a notebook to use when you watch the video, a wiki grading rubric and a chart about the components of an effective Web 2 classroom. I just emailed it to another person - when people say they are starting wikis, I always send this out.

After the boom, is Wikipedia heading for bust? - tech - 04 August 2009 - New Scientist - 0 views

  • The number of articles added per month flattened out at 60,000 in 2006 and has since declined by around a third. They also found that the number of edits made every month and the number of active editors both stopped growing the following year, flattening out at around 5.5 million and 750,000 respectively.
  •
So, is Wikipedia headed out? Some scientists have found that: "The number of articles added per month flattened out at 60,000 in 2006 and has since declined by around a third. They also found that the number of edits made every month and the number of active editors both stopped growing the following year, flattening out at around 5.5 million and 750,000 respectively." I have to wonder if their changes in who can edit has caused this shift. People still look at it (I do) to kick off research.

Comparing ICT use in education across countries | A World Bank Blog on ICT use in Educa... - 7 views

  • we still do not have reliable, globally comparable data in this area
  • basic answers to many basic questions about the use of technology in schools around the world remain largely unanswered
  • Recent World Bank technical assistance related to ICT use in education has highlighted the fact that internationally comparable data related to ICT use in education do not exist -- and that this absence is a problem
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • "It is a mistake to separate out technology infrastructure from pedagogical practices."
    • Adrienne Michetti

Yes, this is true, but very difficult to measure
  • will begun to be collected in late 2010 as part of the general statistical gathering that UIS coordinates with all countries in the world.
  • At first glance, it might appear to some that, generally speaking, the more hours of recommended hours per use of computers might correlate well with how 'advanced' a country is in its use of ICTs in schools.  In fact, the opposite is often the case.
    • Adrienne Michetti

another reason why pedagogy can not be separated from the IT use. It's not enough to simply put a computer in front of a child.
  • In countries considered 'advanced' in ICT use, especially in 1-to-1 computing environments (like Uruguay, for example), laptops are (essentially) always available, but use is not officially prescribed/recommended for a specific period of time.
  • that less developed countries where ICT use in relatively new may well report that ICT use is recommended more than in more 'advanced' countries where ICTs are more mainstreamed in education.
    • Adrienne Michetti

American educators, are you reading this???
  • it highlights the fact that that simple conclusions drawn from such data can be quite dangerous.
  • That said, the building of a universal  index related to ICT use in education is especially problemmatic, given the the number of assumptions and value judgements that would need to be made about the importance or weight of individual indicators -- and that cross-national data collection in this area is still in its infancy
  • the fast changing nature of technology requires regular adaptation and change.
  • As we do so, the fact that the UIS will be collecting basic data on where things stand today in all countries in the world will greatly contribute to our collective ability to track developments and changes in this increasingly vital and strategic area of investment for governments and societies around the world.
    • Adrienne Michetti

I'm thinking the data collectors should talk to Hans Rosling.. I bet he has some ideas about how to go about this properly!
  •
Fascinating article about upcoming data to be collected on international ICT use in education. So many challenges.

MySpace looks to bounce back, while Apple and Google go to war | Technology | guardian.... - 5 views

    * It's been a tough couple of years for MySpace, hit by job losses, falling user numbers and changes at the top. But can anything save the troubled social network - which is still, after all, the world's second largest? I spent several hours with new bosses Jason Hirschhorn and Mike Jones last week, grilling them about their plans to push the site back into the limelight. Want to know what they said?

The ethics of blogging «Ideas and Thoughts from an EdTech - 5 views

  •
I still am not convinced of a better way to personalize your web experience. As an educator, I view them as learning spaces where metacognition is king. That's not the thrust of this post but I wanted to make that clear. ...So the question remains, should he have posted it? Did he break any ethical code? My instinct is to say no to both but I want to throw it out there.

Portal de Actividades Educativas multimedia - Educaplay - 0 views

This is in Spanish but some of my friends out there may like this site. This is from one of the founders, Raul, who just sent me an email: "Greetings, First I would like to congratulate you for your blog, I have seen it recently and I have noticed that you deal with subjects related to educational teaching. Thus, I would like to tell you about a new project that we have developed in ADRformacion. We call it "educaplay", and it is a platform, completely free, to create and use scorm compatible multimedia educational activities. In this platform you can make up crosswords activities, guessing riddles, dialogues, word grids, etc. In short, we are very excited about the project, we are still in the developing phase and we had thought it might be of interest for your blog followers. Here is the link, http://www.educaplay.com/ "
