Since August 2006 this Media Center has been blogging, sharing links and information. Such useful information here. Sometimes we show by example more than we can say by giving assignments. You can tell students blogging is important but if you don't do it. You can also see how assignment are given on this blog. For teachers and media centers to review who are considering blogging.

Registration for World Math Day (March 3, 2010) opened today for students ages 5-18 at www.worldmathday.com. The competition is a free, online math competition where students compete against one another in a quest to answer the most math questions in 24 hours. Last year, a new world record was set after a staggering 1,952,879 million students from 38,058 schools in 204 countries answered 452,681,681 math questions correctly during the World Math Day competition. Students are looking to break the record again this year. This is a REALLY cool event.

Great project - this is on March 3 and registration closes March 1st, 2010.

Think.com's safety lesson with nets standards. Think.com is excellent to use with younger students and is very walled and has an excellent profanity filter. I highly recommend it and have personally used it for a summer blogging project. Excellent site. It also requires an extensive verification process by the participating schools.

In this online tool, students can learn about and write acrostic poems. An acrostic poem uses the letters in a word to begin each line of the poem. All lines of the poem relate to or describe the main topic word. As part of the online tool, students brainstorm words to help write their poems and can save their work-in-progress to revise and edit, reinforcing elements of the writing process. Students can also print their finished acrostic poems or proudly show off their work by e-mailing it to a friend.

Create word clouds with just about anything. (Tip from Tammy Worcester) paste in free answers from Google forms surveys. (Tip from me - paste into MS word first and turn it all into lowercase.)

This digital reconstruction of a face of a woman from the bronze age is really fascinating. This is a great way to weave AI/digital tech into history. "Dr Emily Hauser, the historian who commissioned the digital reconstruction, told the Observer: "She's incredibly modern. She took my breath away. "For the first time, we are looking into the face of a woman from a kingdom associated with Helen of Troy - Helen's sister, Clytemnestra, was queen of Mycenae in legend - and from where the poet Homer imagined the Greeks of the Trojan war setting out. Such digital reconstructions persuade us that these were real people.""

For the first half of 2024-2025 overall K12 school attendance rates have improved, says eschool news, in a study that analyzed more than 1 million students in 143 districts. The overall rate is 93.45%. They noticed that 7th grade is the "tipping point" where attendance rates drop and chronic absenteeism rises. The report goes on to recommend early warning systems and proactive intervention. Perhaps this is a conversation for middle school teachers in your staff meeting this week.
