    Description of what a Community of Practice (CoP) is and what they look like. The second part of the definition "and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly" helps us understand the differences between community (a neighborhood, for example) and a community of practice. Based on this article, three characteristics are crucial to have a CoP: the domain, (there is a shared domain of interest), the community (members build relationships to learn from each other) and the practice (members of the PoC share resources, experiences, stories…)

    Although this article doesn't go into connectivist theory, its focus on collaboration is very informative. Being connected removes many barriers surrounding collaboration. The explanation of the paradigm shift should make educators feel that connectivist theory in the classroom and in the professional development a necessity not something "tech-savvy" teachers do.

    This is an interesting article about how teachers used to work with one another such as going to conferences and having meeting with others in their field. Then it moves on to how they can get the same information from there PLN. This is a way to save time and money for a school district since it is all done virtual. But it also talks about how since we as teacher learned in a time without PLN we are more likely to shy away from them.

    This is great, Courtney. I hadn't seen these 6 pieces before or had noticed them in previous research. It explains the theory nicely at the end of the first sections by saying that "knowledge does not exist in the heads of learners or instructors but through the variety of connections established amongst students, instructors and technologies." I think that this concept deserves more thought and analysis. Are moving away from knowledge contained within our minds in favor of connectedness and what effect will this have on our collective consciousness concerning history and an awareness of the past.

    Courtney, the more I look at Connectivism, the more I think it is learning of the 21st Century. Everyday in class I notice the connections students make - whether it is the Internet, collaboration from other teachers or parents or social media. There is so much knowledge out there to find. Now it is up to us teachers to help the kids find it. I feel less intimidated by not knowing everything. Let the universe help in our knowledge.

I like reading all the reasons why this is needed NOW, because I whole heartedly agree but I can't wait until we get to the HOW this can happen in ALL classrooms.

    Great article! I have been very intrigued about connectivism since I heard about it in my learning theories class. This article gives good reasoning behind connectivism as well as a few ideas for how to incorporate it.

    I truly believe that reflection takes place once you are involved in a learning community. That is the best way to achieve knowledge and change. This article was a nice read about how a learning community can boost professional growth. Students need to see educators taking ownership of their learning as an example of how they need to be in charge of their own learning as well.

They are: ensuring that students learn, creating a culture of collaboration, focusing on results by holding themselves accountable.

    Thank you for sharing this. Just today, my school discussed starting PLC's and I feel that is important to focus on those three big ideas. I feel that this article makes us look closely at the questions and the answer to those questions before we begin creating networks and communities. Makes me think of the UbD-approach and how we should think about what the goals are and what we want our PLC's to do specifically before making them vent sessions amongst teachers.

    I like the scientific approach the slides take on the model and especially like slide 17 because it lists pros of connectivism that I truly believe.

    This is an interesting approach to explaining connectivism. I like that it's in a SlideShare format, and gives a different viewpoint of how the connections happen within different groups. I did find myself a little lost, and wouldn't be able to explain it using this diagram, however I can appreciate it's uniqueness.

    I very much appreciated this slideshow for its explanation of a network. "Every entity is composted of addition entities." Downes 2007. This quote sums up this process beautifully. Also, the image regarding updating student's concepts regularly makes a lot of sense. If I were to try and explain all of this content in several months without update and review, it would most certainly lack important dynamic quality.

    The speed and manner with which we get and receive information is always changing and evolving and it seems as though everyone has access to this information. Now more than ever educators need to be sure to stay current and digitally literate in order to help our students navigate through all this information. Staying digitally connected as an educator is no longer an option, but a necessity.

    I second Megan's comment. Not only is it necessary for us as teachers to be digitally connected, but we have to teach our students these skills because the same will be expected of them in their professions. Connectivism isn't just a educational sort of thing. It applies to all professions.

    I absolutely agree with this article in the supposition that we need digitally literate educators to create digitally literate students. We often think that because students are born knowing how to use this technology (I know that's a bit of an exaggeration) that they know how to critically use it. They do not. While older teachers may know how to look at it critically but not know the actual tools that well. Teachers need to be connected to each other and their students to be their best in today's world.

    I really enjoyed reading this post, and it helped validate the reason I sought my Master's degree in Educational Technology. It is so important for educators to stay connected for their own professional development, and to enrich the instruction given to their students. When teachers connect with other teachers and use PLN's it benefits everyone involved, including the students.

    While short and simple, this gives a powerful punch! By using strong language like "scary" and "criminal" it says teachers (and parents, I might add) need to show kids how to tell their own story wisely. If we block social media tools out, students will not learn!

    I like this slideshare because it broke down Constructivism in a very simple way. It also brought up that knowledge gained doesn't only happen by making connections but by being able to travel across those networks of connections. This is important because it's one thing to connect to an idea, but to be able to take that connection and connect it to something different is difficult. Knowing how to access that knowledge once the connection is made is crucial to retention.

    I like how this slide show clarifies a misconception that some people can have about what connectivism is. "In connectivism, there is no real concept of transferring knowledge, making knowledge or building knowledge." ... "we are growing or developing ourselves our society in certain (connected) ways." Brilliant explanation!
