YouTube across the Disciplines: A Review of the Literature - 2 views

  •
YouTube has grown to become the largest and most highly visited online video-sharing service, and interest in the educational use of YouTube has become apparent. Paralleling the rise of academic interest in YouTube is the emergence of YouTube scholarship. This article presents the results of a review of 188 peer reviewed journal articles and conference papers with "YouTube" in the title that were published between 2006 and 2009. Four questions were answered through the review of YouTube literature : (1) What is the overall distribution of publication activity for refereed journal articles and conference papers with "YouTube" in the title? (2) How are publications with "YouTube" in the title distributed across academic disciplines? (3) What have scholars writ ten about instructional methodologies involving YouTube in a sample of literature containing "YouTube" in the title ? (4) What have scholars reported about the results of studies involving YouTube in a sample of literature containing "YouTube" in the title ? An analysis of the publications revealed that the literature emerged from multiple academic disciplines. The sample of literature included 39 articles and papers describing methods for teaching with YouTube. A total of 99 articles and papers containing the results of research studies were identified and categorized. This literature review is particularly relevant to those online educators who are interested in learning what scholars from their own academic disciplines are writing about YouTube . An emphasis is placed on trends in teaching and research discussed in the sampled literature .

YouTube Pedagogy: Finding Communities of Practice in a Distributed Learning World - 0 views

  •
Presents a rather critical approach to Youtube as an educational tool. Explains that online video library is mostly maintained by a fan base as opposed to deliberate or intentional facilitation. This reduces its credibility as a teaching tool and lacks cohesive curriculum. It is asserted that if learning is encountering what you don't know, then Youtube is not effective for learning as users search their existing interests and for entertainment. Another noted disadvantage is that viewing and commenting on Youtube videos may provide marketing data and potentially undermines student privacy.

Connectivism - YouTube - Erin Jonesrebandt - 2 views

  •
Another great youtube video that describes connectivism in layman terms. I like this video because it explains easily how connectivism works by connecting people together through social sites to help people learn. The video also gives a brief description of Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism. A great find!

A YouTube video to explain connectivism. The author uses the example of a student "Bob", who is failing his political science class because the material is too complicated and not important to him. When Bob discovers that social media networks such as Facebook have resources that relate to his class, he begins to make connections and understand the material. Suddenly Bob has more understanding of the issue and is more interested in the topic. The creator of the video describes this process as the learning theory known as Connectivism.
  •
Joanna, I loved this YouTube video! It simplified Connectivism and Bob was fun! I loved when he made the connection. Thank you for sharing.
  •
I agree with Matt above. This is a short and informative introduction to connectivism that touches on the major concepts of learning theory as well as implications in our time.

What is a PLN? - 12 views

  •
A short, engaging YouTube video on defining Personal Learning Networks.

This is one of the videos I watched on YouTube as well, Melodie! It does such a great job demonstrating a large amount of information about PLNs in a very short time frame. I thought there were two really critical points made in this video. First, Lalande makes it clear that a PLN does not necessarily have to be online, but it is the digital interaction does make a PLN special. I also liked the way he presented all of the options for interaction (i.e. a lurker or sharer) as well as the networking tool options, such as Twitter or YouTube. Thanks for sharing!
  •
I thought the video did a very good job of describing a PLN in a very efficient manner but matter of fact way. It was simplistic, yet allowed the view to comprehend the extensive nature of a PLN. The most important part of the video in my mind is when it talks about it is something you can choose to participate when you want and pick and choose things that are best suited for you!
  •
Melodie, thank you for sharing this video. Youtube has such great resources, what a great way to explain PLNs to colleagues. I especially appreciate how it specifically described the network as the one you get involved in when, where and how you want to. I appreciate how he describes how you can be heavily invested or not, but that you will gain a larger benefit if you leave the "lurker" phase and invest more.
  •
Love having short snippets/videos that describe a topic in brief. Sometimes, a topic can become so cumbersome so quick. This was an informative video, short, and to the point. Thanks for posting!
  •
I really enjoy the simplicity of this video while at the same time the depth of understanding it gives in such a brief period of time. For me this video really drives home the effectiveness technology can have in presenting potentially overwhelming information in a very easy to understand manner.
  •
In my opinion, the key words of this video are "what", because you choose what to share, "where" and "when" to do it. It is brief but powerful. Thanks Melodie for sharing it!

Dr. George Siemens is one of the intellectual founders of connectivism. Makes sense to get the overview directly from him, right?
  •
Dr Siemens reflects on the conditions that led to the development of his theory of connectivism. In this context he provides an introduction to the topic.
  •
Tim, I loved learning how Dr. Siemens came up with his theory of Connectivism. Thank you!
  •
I enjoyed this YouTube video by Dr. Siemens. The idea that Connectivism is a "social connected process of learning" sets his theory apart from other learning theories.
  •
Dr. Siemens testimony regarding his own experience with and exploration of contectivism helps to cement the multiple reading and resources that can be found all over the internet. His simple and easy to follow explanation creates a solid base from which one can expand their understanding of the theory and how it is put into practice.
  •
Siemens explains what connectivism is and how it originated. After reading many articles by the reseracher, it was beneficial to see and hear him discuss connectivism. Enjoy the video!
  •
I liked this brief explanation that comes straight from the source! In essence, I think watching the video and listening to a person explain it solidified it faster than multiple articles, thus illustrating the concepts of connectivism.
