Teachers are developing PLNs to connect with other educators and professionals all over the world to stay up to date on their teaching methods and resources. This article gives an overview of why many teachers belong to a PLN and why it is beneficial to their professional goals. I appreciated that the author named and discussed three popular PLNs that I plan on looking into further. They were Classroom 2.0, Edmodo, and The Educator's PLN. I agree with the author completely when he states that "teachers are lifelong learners." This article is a great read for those new to PLNs.

Learning with 'e's: Theories for the digital age: Connectivism - 3 views

  •
This very brief article discusses how learning theories are being questioned by educators due to the demands of the digital age. They discuss how students today are required to find the knowledge and information they need in order for them to "internalise it.". Technology has changed the way we learn and process information but they ask if there are any biological implications. The references provide a good source for further reading.

Connectivism - Emerging Perspectives on Learning, Teaching and Technology - 11 views

This article discusses various learning theories and what happens when you throw technology into the mix. They do not feel that previous learning theories should be dismissed but need to be viewed in a different light to meet the demands of the 21st Century. There is a thorough definition of connectivism and all of it's components. I appreciated the visual chart comparing the different learning theories to connectivism and how critics of connectivism viewpoints are explained.

What is a PLN? Why Do I Need One? | TeachHUB - 26 views

  •
This article describes what a PLN is and how it relates to one's real world and social networking communities. It discusses why having a PLN is important to an educator today. In the past you need to be physically present to get your desired information and at times that was not even possible. Today a teacher can determine what training is necessary and find this information through their PLN network. The article explains how a PLN not only allows you to learn but also encourages you to share your knowledge with others.

Connectivism as a Digital Age Learning Theory - 16 views

  •
This article puts a focus on the debate if connectivism is "a learning theory or instructional theory or merely a pedagogical view." Instructional theory has major elements that are discussed in this article and connectivism is analyzed to see if it in fact, is a learning theory. The author recognizes that the debate will last a long time but the fact that connectivism is valuable in the educational setting will prevail. Technology is a major factor of its success. This article convinced me of the importance of allowing my students more access to technology for educational success.

  •
This chapter provides an overview and history of communities of practice. There is a nice description of the theoretical assumptions underlying its development. The differences of communities of practice and other knowledge communities are explained thoroughly. There is an appreciation for how technology plays a role in today's communities of practice, how it can support it and how it is not less effective than face to face communication. It is explained that the key to a successful community of practice is "connections, conversations, content, and information context."

Cybrary Man's Educational Websites has been one of my go to websites. It is a host of resources for educators, parents, and students. The educators pages have resources for all subjects, grade levels, and anything else you can think of including social networking in education. You can find a blog list rich with information about educational technology. I used this site to write the technology curriculum for my school district.
