    Teachers are developing PLNs to connect with other educators and professionals all over the world to stay up to date on their teaching methods and resources. This article gives an overview of why many teachers belong to a PLN and why it is beneficial to their professional goals. I appreciated that the author named and discussed three popular PLNs that I plan on looking into further. They were Classroom 2.0, Edmodo, and The Educator's PLN. I agree with the author completely when he states that "teachers are lifelong learners." This article is a great read for those new to PLNs.

    Edmodo is an LMS so I guess then all LMS would be PLN tools. I guess I never thought of them that way but they are. Ive used Edmodo once before to organize a project among faculty but have mostly used it with students.

    Staggering number of teachers that are enrolled in Edmodo, which show how the education field truly embraces the concepts of communities of practice. The communities of practice idea has not fully been accepted into the USCG and I'm excited to work to create one.

    The article is a comprehensive view of PLNs. It gives concrete examples of how to design and grow a PLN. By examining three widely used PlNs, it might encourage more teachers to begin a PLN.     I found this post to be extremely informative regarding how teachers can use PLNs for learning, moreover for modeling learning for their students. The social network portion of this article was authentic to the purpose of this course and aided in making connections regarding the usage of social networks for educational learning tasks. The review of the three PLNs was also helpful as we navigate this course and begin to implement strategies and plans for the incorporation of social networking into our own classrooms.

Realising the potential of peer-to-peer learning - 4 views

    Summary: Educators from Australia uncovered that the most useful collaboration taken from a course was student-led and student generation conversations. The users were able to exponentially grow professionally with the help of their peers through social media. The collaboration in this case was not mandated by the professor, but merely a suggestion. It was the desire to learn from others that sparked the community created digitally. It was through the social media that the learners were able to share ideas, questions in a way that was organized and beneficial to all.

    The authors participated in a MOOC offered by the University of Edinburgh in 2013. The course included digital activities and peer collaboration exercises. Many of the participants enrolled in the course so that they could improve their own instruction in online environments. Through the process the course takers learned that they could use social media platforms for educational purposes. As they participated they ended up forming PLNs among themselves and other participants. With this article, the authors offered their experiences of how they realized the full potential benefits of MOOCs and social media for educators.

    Very interesting article. I always sign up for MOOCs and find I always take away something but have never had that social connection experience in the course as they did in this article; maybe it was the instructor(s) and their encouragement to connect outside of the MOOC. I am going to pay more attention in the future to see if I see connectivism, PLN, and communities of practice.

Learning from others at work: communities of practice and informal learning - 9 views

    This study examines how adults learn from one another within a workplace environment. As the article highlights: "[Informal] learning at work constitutes a large part of the learning undertaken by adults . . ." The article determined that large worksites afforded a range and variety of communities of practice, informal learning opportunities, and types of learning within a worksite. However, very often, the people we learn from at work are not necessarily recognized as having a role that traditionally promotes learning.

    The authors David Boud and Heather Middleton acknowledge that in many cases the learning that goes on through informal discussions between coworkers is almost always more valuable than the learning that takes place inside a classroom or formal professional development workshop. As part of the article the authors examined informal workplace CoPs in four different workgroups within the organization. They wanted to see what types of learning occurred. Through interviews with participants they found that the larger the workgroup the more diverse the opportunities for community professional development. What they discovered in that end was that sometimes these workgroups developed characteristics of CoPs and other times the group is not cohesive enough to really develop a shared learning environment.

    This was a very in-depth paper looking at how adults learn from one another in the workplace in informal ways. I have been reading a lot about Communities of Practice this week and I was struck by how the authors discussed structural factors, such as seniority and large scale workforce, could effect the true development of communities of practice. It discussed political and beurocratic issues could be possible setbacks. This is not something I had considered but is a true reality. When reading, I saw it is easy to assume that like-minded practioners in a similar domain could all just work together in harmony. It is truly more realistic to realize that certain issues like seniority could possible stand in the way.

    I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article and I found it logical that in the example of the Tiling Teachers, the article mentioned that they considered each other peers on the same level which would facilitate the learning that takes place within that group. I wonder how this learning would contrast from feedback or learning taking place from students in the class or even a superior like a Vice President of a program or a Senior Instructional Designer?

    This was a great article and got me thinking a little deeper about communities of practice. So far this week, my studies have led to articles and examples of communities of practice in a learning or educational environment. I love how the focus was really on practices of communities of practice in the workplace. It was cool to realize that this process begins way before the class even begins. Thanks for sharing.

This article does not focus on the use of social media but explains how systems can be used to prime students prior to coming to class and at the same time inform the instructor what areas students are having difficulties with at the time.  This is great because instructors and students do not have to go over information that has already been learned. Social media can be the vehicles used for this type of communication.

The second part of the definition "and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly" helps us understand the differences between community (a neighborhood, for example) and a community of practice. Based on this article, three characteristics are crucial to have a CoP: the domain, (there is a shared domain of interest), the community (members build relationships to learn from each other) and the practice (members of the PoC share resources, experiences, stories…)

    What a great article that shows merit for connectivism in the new tech age. The comment about students not seeing the importance in passive activities is becoming prevelant in my own classroom. Taking into account the changes that are occuring with technology and internet, as well as the use of communities of practice can help educators best reach students using connectivism theories and approaches.

This is a great statement to show that connectivist theory centers on the interaction of people. In addition, it explains how the new theory works with personal networks and communities of practice. The digital age is transforming the way people approach learning.

    This one I didn't summarize, only because I really had a hard time grasping the three elements of the CoP, and I thought this site encapsulated it nicely. Incidentally, my creative assignment for this week was inspired by the reference to Star Trek fans in this post. Here are the three elements make up CoP, and again, this information below is taken straight from the source (long quotes), because the definition is so good: 1. There needs to be a domain. A CoP has an identity defined by a shared domain of interest (e.g. radiologists, Star Trek fans, middle school history teachers, Seahawks football fans, etc.); it's not just a network of people or club of friends. Membership implies a commitment to the domain. 2. There needs to be a community. A necessary component is that members of a specific domain interact and engage in shared activities, help each other, and share information with each other. They build relationships that enable them to learn from each other. In this way, merely sharing the same job does not necessitate a CoP. A static website on hunting in itself is not a community of practice. There needs to be people who interact and learn together in order for a CoP to be formed. Note that members do not necessarily work together daily, however. Wenger points to the example of Impressionist painters who sometimes met in cafes to discuss their painting styles. He indicates that even though these men normally painted alone, these kinds of interactions were essential to making them a CoP. 3. There needs to be a practice: A CoP is not just people who have an interest in something (e.g. sports or agriculture practices). The third requirement for a CoP is that the members are practitioners. It does take some significant time to get it all set up but I'm finding that the organization is paying off because when my son ends up napping longer than expected, I can open up Feedly and have lots of cool articles in the line-up to read without searching. Now I'm adding Twitter to the mix. People constantly ask how I have time to go to school and I think it boils down to tactics like this that allow you to capitalize on those unexpected breaks.

This article has just enough tips and information for someone who isn't that tech savvy to be able to create a PLN. I also like how they include the links to the different websites so people can go step by step in creating their network, then refer back to the article for the next step.

It explained that theory and knowledge are linked in a PLN because they are accessible in the context they are applied. The nature of the learning in a PLN is all about applying knowledge and coming up with new ideas about its relevance to concepts. PLNs are all about creating as well as sharing as well as autonomy for its users. Connectivism is about working cooperatively, meaning independently but in a shared environment. In Graham Attwell's article he offers some insight and ideas towards why personal learning Environments may be essential to learning in the future. . He details the technology behind the buzz surrounding personal learning environments and examples of how we can use them going forward. What I enjoyed about the article was the notion that everyone's learning environment, style, context, and situation are different and PLE's enable the learner to pace themselves and grow on their own terms. While detailing lifelong learning the author grabs the theory of self-driven education being helped by personal learning environments. Graham does a good job of not following into a common misconception that technology directly correlates to better learning, but rather approaches the aspect of what technology could do for learning as well as what personal learning environments could do for learning as well. From his own personal PLE list of software to explaining the next steps in adopting personal learning environments on a wider scale Graham makes sense of a complicated theory.

Communities of Practice the Organizational Frontier - 4 views

    By: Eitenne C. Wenger and William M. Snyder Wenger, E. C., & Snyder, W. M. (2000). Communities of practice: The organizational frontier. Harvard business review, 78(1), 139-146. The first article I started with was a Harvard Business review entry regarding communities of practice within organizations. While my other articles focused on the education world and describe actions within the social environment, this article took a different approach in explaining the inner workings CofP's play in the office. The fundamental meaning communities of practice represent go unchanged, but it is interesting that this article puts a table and explanation for the differences other office groups represent, such as an informal network, project team, and formal work group. This distinction allows for other varied communities of practice to be represented. Such as the education field and social psychology. Wenger and Snyder then take the article one step further by explaining the uses of CoPs for management and how to facilitate their growth for strong company cultures.

The primary group might only be a few people but will continue to build to the point that the entire organization is involved.     This article focuses on the role of personal learning environments in higher education. I particularly appreciated the description of the PLE in the article. Pointing out what it offers that Learning Management Systems do not, the PLE is explained as the future of education where the student takes control and responsibility from the reigns of the institution. It also suggests that PLEs have staying power in education due to the fact that they are not wrapped up with a specific technology, rather they have the ability to adapt and change as technology around us continues to do so. The author discusses how students should be given challenging situations rather than ridged assignments.     I appreciate the simple explanation this article provides. "Connectivism is driven by the understanding that decisions are based on rapidly altering foundations. New information is continually being acquired." This aspect help solidify the idea that knowledge is not finite and gaining it is never over. Connectivism provides a way to help make sense of our knowledge potential in light of constant change in technology.

    This is a great resource for Connectivism. I felt that this theory was more dense then PLNs and CoPs and many articles I looked at were difficult to follow. I like how the theory is broken down here and includes helpful videos. I will be using this resource to help with my creative expression project.

    Thank you for sharing! I also found the simplicity of the explanation great in order to grasp the concept. By referring to Connectivism as to "a learning theory for a digital age" makes it easy to remember that it is a new theory (since the digital era is also relatively new.) That, in turn, may also affect the way we perceive the main principles of Connectivism (outline in the article): learning as a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources, learning residing in non-human appliances, and the need to maintain connections to facilitate continual learning, among others. Due to such an abundance of information in the digital era, the key point in the article for me was "the ability to draw distinctions between important and unimportant information is vital"! A skill is yet to be mastered!

    Usually when I see anything WIki that has to do with research I have the initial tendency to try to stay far away because in my undergrad years I was constantly reminded to pursue peer reviewed articles. What I really appreciate about this resource is how simple and basic it is on Connectivism. This wikispace provides all the "nuts and bolts" of Connectivism and is a great starting point for digging deeper into understanding its theory. Great find!

This article believes that with connectivism we can move to a new age of learning. Learning can be more collaborative and global. With connectivism we see the use of networks with nodes and connections to elaborate on our learning.

    Thanks for sharing, David. I like that Mackley and Vincent show the various branches of their PLNs because it gives me a frame of reference and helps me see where I need to focus my own efforts. I find the concept of the PLE to be fuzzy, and feel that I need to learn more about it and its relationship to the PLN.

    This article does a nice job of explaining PLNs and the theory surrounding them. The article includes definitions of personal learning environments, personal learning networks, and connectivism. I also like that it includes diagrams to compare their PLNs, as well as an introductory video.

    I picked this one, because it has a video that I found helpful. I learn better with sound and pictures. It stresses that PLNs are not things, but rather ideas. The other reason that I include this in my list is that the article actually provides diagrams of what different people's PLNs look like. Given that we're learning about this sort of thing in this unit, I thought I'd also mention this. Finally, I liked that this article acknowledges that according to the Theory of Connectivism, you don't even have to know the person who you're learning from.
