A Sexual Health SIM in Second Life (University of Plymouth) - 0 views

  •
This is an excellent site that would be great for educators or business people who want to improve their virtual skills, expand their virtual contacts, or hold meetings. This site was created and is maintained by a university in the UK. I found a place for educators to make appointments to get help for improving their skills in the virtual world, many educational tools such as interactive slide shows and art exhibits, and a group I could join that connected me with other like-minded educators. The site was easy to navigate, well-designed, and loaded with content. Even though I spent nearly two hours here, I felt as though I barely scratched the surface. The only thing that I still find a bit odd is that I do not know why the title is Sexual Health SIM. I did not find anything related to health care. But again, there is so much more that I did not search.

This is the best site I found. You are greeted by a sign and welcome notecard that describes the origins of the project and how it has grown to over 100 region and explains the vision of the project:"… has been to inspire and influence future development, to expand working knowledge, to showcase creativity and ideas, and to encourage collaboration both inside and outside of Second Life." You can instantly access a map that allows you to teleport to the location of your choice including four different teaching sites, one for the arts a conference center, Learning, and Red Rocks. There are a multitude of resources here for the educator. Everywhere you turn around there are billboard that advertise upcoming events, signs that connect you to groups, and free things to collect. There are many places to hold meetings from small and intimate rooms to large amphitheaters.

Clemson University-Thothica Community - 1 views

Thothica Community is a place where people come together to discuss philosophy, poetry, psychology, culture, mathematics, computer science, physics, cosmology, artificial life, education, and second life. When I first arrived there was a nice schedule of times with topics that would be discussed. Some of the topics included evolutionary psychology and quantum economics, all presented by community sponsors and members. Also listed were poetry readings and philosophy games. This might be a good way for students to join in a discussion or share their own writing.

A SL repository for maps. This guy has collected maps for years and finally digitized them. The SL place he has created is really cool to visit and look at if you enjoy cartography and/or enjoy historical interpretations of actual places.

Can people actually 'own' virtual land? - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
Potential legal issues dealing with "land" ownership in SL. Not sure what this means for the future, but as the article states, vitrual world are basically lawless. It compares the legality of virtual world to the 16th century. The only problem with this comparison, is that in the 1500s people were being murdered for only being suspected of wrongdoing (or in the case of Muslims and Jews, "wrongbeing"). SL does seem like an anything goes type of place... I wonder how this pending legislation will affect SL. I'm not sure a federal, state or local government has any rights over a virtual space. have to wait to see the results of this legislation.

I rather like the idea of learning about other places and other cultures using Second Life. This location gives a lot of facts, though much is in German. It has some parts of the geography that are reminiscent of Switzerland, and there are plenty of informational posters in English.

Virtual Community Landmarks - 1 views

This is an incredible location- a collection of intriguing landmarks from a variety of subjects. You really need to stop by here and pick up some good ideas about places to visit in SL and the internet. From one location you can view displays on many topics complete with links to webpages and notecards containing additional references. Some ideas: DaVinci's Observatory, A Cooking Center, Hyperhistory -http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html Spectrum School Network- http://www.incwell.com/Biographies/ History of Computing and Learning in Education Open Library: directory-style search http://openlibrary.org/search/subjects?q=educational+technology

Second Life Maps | SploLand - 2 views

This place was great! It was huge. First, I got on an airplane and took a Splo tour. It took me to different places. I explored the pi area, observed the moon's orbit, and lastly went to see the optical illusions at the exhibits. There were many exhibits. Most of the exhibits I visited had optical illusions. In science, I teach my third graders to observe by looking. There was the face/vase illusion, the distorted room, and lots of other cool illusions. This reminded me of the Exploratorium in San Francisco. With budget cuts, this would be a great place to show students without leaving school campus!

Great article, Jose. If we block these sites how will we teach students how to use them appropriately and navigate the web safely?

When we visited here, we also ended up visiting the adjacent Builder's Brewery, which is a rich resource for those who enjoy building in Second Life. We thought it was fitting that such a place would be located so close to a museum dedicated to the work of a famous architect.

Second Life Success Stories - 0 views

What originally piqued my interest in this site was the "Training for Traffic" that I read on the SL Work Success Stories site (http://work.secondlife.com/en-US/successstories/case/tuvnord/). No small wonder that that topic caught my eye, what with my 15 year old constantly begging me to let her drive. TUV NORD created several traffic situations that they turned into interactive driving tasks. I vaguely remember being in driver's ed and watching a movie in a "simulator" when I was 15. Once I found out that I could spin the steering wheel in any direction and it made no difference, I went on to what was, at the time, my next priority: sleeping. Parenthood brings new perspectives; I shudder at the thought that my child might do the same during her own driver's training class. This sim sounds realistic enough to not only keep a kid awake at the wheel, but give them experience before they get behind the wheel of a deadly weapon. Unfortunately, the sim was not up and running when I visited. This island also has some other interesting items of educational value. You can learn how to use ground penetrating radar (GPR) to find tree roots and underground electrical lines that you might not want to cut through. There is also a huge interactive fuel cell that you can fly through to investigate the inner workings of the thing, which would be useful in a discussion of chemistry, even at the grade levels that I teach (4th & 5th). The only drawback is that most of the notecards you get are in German. Most of the signs do have a translation tool, though (click on the British flag for English).
