The world's largest photo service just made its pictures free to use | The Verge - 6 views

  •
"If you go to the Getty Images website, you'll see millions of images, all watermarked. There are more than a hundred years of photography here, from FDR on the campaign trail to last Sunday's Oscars, all stamped with the same transparent square placard reminding you that you don't own the rights. If you want Getty to take off the watermark, you'll have to pay for it. Starting now, that's going to change. Getty Images is dropping the watermark for the bulk of its collection, in exchange for an open-embed program that will let users drop in any image they want, as long as the service gets to append a footer at the bottom of the picture with a credit and link to the licensing page. Digital Life in 2025 | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project - 1 views

  •
"This report is the latest research report in a sustained effort throughout 2014 by the Pew Research Center to mark the 25th anniversary of the creation of the World Wide Web by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. He wrote a paper on March 12, 1989 proposing an "information management" system that became the conceptual and architectural structure for the Web.  He eventually released the code for his system  - for free - to the world on Christmas Day in 1990. It became a milestone in easing the way for ordinary people to access documents and interact over the Internet - a system that linked computers and that had been around for years."

Why we need more visual texts in our teaching and learning - 2 views

  •
"Found this fantastic infographic touting the success of infographics. Reading it ( or more correctly, viewing it) immediately focused my thoughts on the use of visual texts in classrooms today. Click on the screenshot above to view the animated, interactive info graphic that presents  13 reasons why we should use infographics ( or visual texts in general). Unlike other infographics I link to on Mr G Online, I'm not going to discuss the specific points presented - that would be contradictory to the message of the infographic. I'll let you get your own meaning from it. However, I am going to reflect on how it made me consider the use of visual texts in education."

Phonebloks - Made by Dave Hakkens - 0 views

  •
(First time I've tried sharing a link to the Diigo Group - Hope this works!) A phone only lasts a couple of years before it breaks or becomes obsolete. Although it's often just one part which killed it, we throw everything away since it's almost impossible to repair or upgrade.   Phonebloks is made of detachable bloks. The bloks are connected to the base which locks everything together into a solid phone. If a blok breaks you can easily replace it, if it's getting old just upgrade.

Want To Get Noticed On Twitter? Be Yourself - 0 views

  •
An interesting post be 'edmerger' on 'being' yourself online, rather than someone else's agenda. I agree with the basic principle of the piece, but feel that it is also slightly too simple. Whether we admit it or not, post comments and links can be considered as some kind of digital branding. We are branding ourselves whether we mean to or not. I think if you try too hard, then that is the issue, not necessarily branding itself.

If you're an Australian school looking for links to assist you with the process, then take a look at the following."
