There is a big difference between having a BYOD policy and a BYOD learning environment. The former lays the foundation for a BYOD learning environment but it by no means guarantees it. In order to shift from a school with a BYOD policy to a school with a BYOD learning environment, mindset shifts need to occur organizationally:

The Boys' Reading Commission has found that boys' underachievement in reading is associated with the interplay of three factors: -  The home and family environment, where girls are more  likely to be bought books and taken to the library, and where  mothers are more likely to support and role model reading; -  The school environment, where teachers may have a limited  knowledge of contemporary and attractive texts for boys  and where boys may not be given the opportunity to develop  their identity as a reader through experiencing reading for  enjoyment; -  Male gender identities which do not value learning and  reading as a mark of success.

This article offers a list of questions that were developed to help teachers clarify the unique added value of a digital learning environment, and whether their assignments were making the best use of this environment. "The six questions should be used when evaluating the design of assignments and student work and if the answer is "no" to them, then the chances are that technology is not really being applied in the most innovative ways. The questions we ask to evaluate implementation and define innovation are critical."
