    Super cool project, Mara! I like how the mission statement notes that QZAP is a "living history," and that the members are also documenting the history of hardware/software used to create this digital platform where the archived history of these zines lives.     Pretty good list! Thin annotations, but the websites for the tools tell all. Some tools I use regularly in the archives and some I've heard about but not really investigated, like Omeka. From Omeka website: "Museums need systems that allow them to engage their publics and build communities around objects." I may do a toolplay on this. Outcome: Omeka offers museums, libraries, and archives easy ways to push content to their online visitors through feeds and rotating featured items and exhibits on the homepage, while also giving visitors opportunities to contribute content to a museum's digital collections, comment on items, or share museum object data with a visitor's personal social networks.

I could see how this resource would be helpful if you were thinking about how far you needed to go with the data you have collected.

    I was looking back at this (really interesting) multimedia writing work by Anne Wysocki and noticed how many of the pieces required special players and ample download time/space - Flash Player, Shockwave Player, 1.5 MB of download space - which got me thinking about platform/storage restrictions and digital accessibility. In many instances, a researcher may need not only specific digital skills/knowledge, but also specific platforms, players, software, memory space, etc. to conduct her work. And as players, platforms, software, etc. are upgraded, older digital texts may become less accessible. On that note, I have been taking screen shots of all of the scenes in the Facebook game I'm currently studying. Why? One reason is so I can put these screen shots into a presentation, but the more pressing reason is that another game I'm really interested in looking at (Food Force, a social media game from 2005 - so ancient, right?) is no longer accessible. In its place is a Facebook page with a big bandaged thumb and a "Sorry! This page has been removed." message. An ethnography conducted in a digital space, it seems, requires just as much "recording" as one in an offline space.

    I think it is a great question to ask where will all the digital information go once it becomes out of date> I was working with a program called Scalar last term (a very useful tool) which allows you to show information in different ways. It was built for use in the Digital Humanities. One of its fatal flaws, in my opinion, is that it relies primarily on links to information, images, and video out in cyber space. If you build a project around this, there is no guarantee that the information will be available for any length of time and then what do you do? I think this is an issue more and more as new software updates and the old information can either not be found or is no longer accessible.

    The life and preservation of the digital world is a huge question, and one that I don't think enough people are considering. I see more and more of my friends taking all their photos with smartphones and loading them to Instagram or Facebook, or worse never moving them beyond their phones. I wonder what photos will have survived in 20 years when their children are looking to make wedding or anniversary slide shows, or simply becoming interested in their own pasts. There are no hard copies of these images, and while hard copies are vulnerable, so are digital copies for a number of reasons.

    great points in this discussion, especially around issues of "access"...which range from having the "right" tech to get into a site to ADA regulations/requirements. Also, preservation is a complicated facet of access and one worth discussing seriously in this course as we think about digital data.

    This is the site of the photographer from the BBC News piece on "A 13-year-old eagle huntress in Mongolia." His own account is completely different from the BBC article. He is not, as BBC portrayed him, an ethnographer who stumbled onto a cultural shift in gendered activities-he is a storyteller who went looking for an unusual story, and made it happen. "I had gone looking for my eagle huntress. . .I was amazed by her comfort and ease as she began handling the grand eagle for the first time in her life." I have the same question I asked on the bookmark for the BBC article; why was it important to the BBC to represent this story as ethnography?

    I am not familiar with Svidensky's work so thanks for passing this along. Regarding the story of the eagle huntress: it's clear that many of the photographer's images are "posed" or, at least, were made during the "magic hour." What are the implications for this type of "portraiture?" Some of the images are supposedly "candid" (and some not), but I would question the degree to which Svidensky directed his informant's position/direction for the camera. Assuming the photographer's purpose was documentation, are there overarching ethical implications for this type of visual storytelling?

    I think perhaps, I read it differently. In the article he uses phrases like: " I also photographed him during sunset, on horseback, proudly holding on to his golden eagle."--This reads to me like he knows that it's posed and he isn't making any excuses for it. "I tried coming up with new ways of photographing the eagle hunters." This is when he talking about previous documentation that had been done. "photography session" Again, I read this as the photos being obviously posed. But that's just out I read it. If the article had been lacking phrases like this, then I would have to question the ethical implications.

    Agreed - and even without the quotes, a casual observer could tell that these images are posed. However, I think portraiture-as-documentary photography raises some intriguing methodological questions/concerns. Considering the original piece was published through a (well-respected) international media organization, my guess is that some interesting conversations occurred during editorial meetings regarding the nature of Svidensky's work. Maybe this example points to the blurring lines between traditional news photography and pictures made for ethnographic purposes?

    Quite possibly. And if that is the case, it is certainly evident in the two contrasting articles we have here. But I also wonder if we're not watching a paradigm shift to the photo-essay style that Svidensky is making use of. With the rising popularity of sites like Buzzfeed, I wonder if--in order to bring more interest to his work--he's utilizing that same style in hopes of being more "readable" for the masses. What will be interesting, though, is if we see a similar shift to the photo-essay from the sites that push traditional news photography.

    This is the best voice recognition software out there. You can train it to recognize your voice and it is incredibly accurate. I have written papers using it. The student version is around $100. The challenge with it is it is only going to be really accurate with your voice so you would have to listen and restate what you are hearing for the program to really recognize it well.

    This seems like it could be really useful, in theory. While the video demonstrated that the program works really well with a well-enunciating woman with a fairly moderate American English accent, I would be curious to see how the program recognizes accents. I know it says that it attunes itself to individual voices, but whether that works in practice is not really apparent on the site. I guess it reminds me of that episode in IT Crowd, when Roy convinces his boss that he can converse with his computer. But still cool!

    It works fine for accents. You practice reading a set script to tune the program to your voice.

    I guess what I'm questioning is its ability to adapt to tonal changes, speech rate, etc. I know I don't pronounce things with consistency.
