Jindal Challenges Obama's Unlawful Coercion Common Core - 0 views

  •
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal filed a lawsuit in federal court last month against the Obama administration over its use of federal funding and waivers from No Child Left Behind (NCLB) to encourage states to adopt Common Core national standards and tests. Those in opposition to Common Core feel that the standards in place under Common Core could possibly result in standardizing weakness instead of reinforcing standards of excellence. The proof of this concern is found as states compare the effects of Common Core against previous standards of excellence. Those who agree with Governor Jindal's concern argue that Common Core national standards and testing will ultimately support federal control over education - a move that will only further weaken individual responsibility of schools and districts.

The Common Core standards were brought about by the Obama Administration. The purpose of Common Core is to clearly define what student should be knowing in each grade level and eliminate the unevenness of former state standards. A majority of states have adopted the standard while there are few states who have decided that their current state standards are preferable. The article also goes over the reasons why we have come to this point, and how to move forward.

Get Answers: What is the Common Core? - 0 views

  •
The goal of most educators is to have students achieve major goals in school and proceed on to college and a career with the foundation that is provided in schools. The state has approved a list of standards of education, also called Common Core. Teachers use these standards in the classroom and test the students to discover if these standards are helping the students learn. The students will take a standardized test to evaluate on how well the students have learned from the Common Core. If the students cannot achieve these set goals, educators and teachers will have to revise the strategies to teacher their students the Common Core.

Definitely a common thing I've seen in the fitness industry. People can sometimes get so wrapped up in trying to be lean and fit that they go about it in the wrong ways. They literally workout to the point of exhaustion and then barely refuel their bodies with the necessary nutrients. Which causes more harm than good.
  •
Eating disorders are a tragedy, and a sickness. It is definitely evident in this country, more so than where I come form in Canada, as image is more important in America according to studies, appearance can take someone further than education, which is truly sad. Which leads to more people being self conscious, and more eating disorders.
  •
Eating disorders affect a great deal of American teenagers and young adults, and a big reason is because society sets standards as to what a male or female's ideal body should look like. Rather than trying to live up to society's standards, people should try to live up to a standard of health for their own bodies.
  •
This social issue has been around for many years and it is still a huge issue in the world. I like this article due to the fact that it gives you information on the disorders such as treatments, signs and statistics. All people should be educated on the subject.
  •
I think that this situation is sort of a "hush hush" situation so I think it is great that people are talking out about it. If more people talk about it, then maybe people that are suffering from situations like this can be open about it and about getting help. I also think that people opening up about it, will open up societies eyes and realize that people are suffering from this mostly because of the pressure people have to look how society wants.
  •
People are so wrapped up on having the perfect body that they fail to realize their hurting themselves. Eating disorders are very tragic, but are also very common these days. We start to think that just because one plan worked for someone else it will work for everyone. The truth is, everyone's body is different and reacts differently too.

The History of Common Core State Standards - US News - 1 views

  •
What some see as a surprise attack on states' rights, others know as a carefully thought out education reform. What seems like straight-forward educational reform has sparked plenty of controversy. For some, the Common Core State Standards seemed to come from nowhere, and appeared to be a sneaky attack on states' rights to control local education.

Non-GMO Project - 0 views

  •
Everything consumers and retailers need to know about the non-GMO project. Standard are used to assist people to better understanding and to affect change with in the agricultural industry. Helps with verification of products.
  •
This link doesn't lead to an article. GMOs face a lot of debate but after a lot of testing there has yet to be any solid proof that they cause any harm to the people consuming GMO foods. In fact, all bananas are GMO's. The practice of modifying crops to yield more food has been happening for as long as humans have grown crops. Companys that make the seeds are pretty awful. They treat farmers horribly.

Same-Sex Marriage Isn't About Freedom - 0 views

  •
His description of how this happened is almost backwards: freedom and individualism are not to blame. the conservative thinker Frank Meyer emphasized, by freeing the individual, Christianity created a tension between its high standards-to be perfect as the Father is perfect, to turn the other cheek-and the impossibility of achieving them. What we see today in the success of gay marriage is not really freedom run amok, but the result of turning the power to define morality over to the state, or to the dominant group representing it.

Education and Social Issues:Learning Through Real-World Contexts - 0 views

  •
The education system suffers from many social issues, but the one that stands out to me most is that real life experiences/lessons aren't taught in the standard educational system. Children/young adults are not taught enough about the world around them thus not preparing them for life outside of school.
  •
I completely agree with this I feel like we are not taught too many real-life situations school is supposed to prepare us for the future and how can we do that if we don't know many basic life skills great article!

Privacy: A Failed Experiment? - 1 views

  •
Is privacy real? Google records websites visited on computers to pop up ads, that's how they make their money. Privacy is seeming less like a right and more of a goal. With surveillance of the government are infringing more upon citizens privacy. Why should the government be able to view our emails when Hillary Clinton deletes all of hers and is backed by the FBI?
  •
I completely agree. I feel that privacy is a mere illusion in our society. Just because their is no paper trail, does not mean that there is no digital fingerprint. The government has always been a double-standard in how they have the power to make the rules, and yet they break them. People like Hillary just have more connections and the means to get themselves out of trouble.
  •
This was a very interesting article. It does give a lot of truths about how the goverment has gone behind our backs and gone through people's private information at times. It is not fair at all for the government to be doing something like this without reasonable suspicion and a court order.

The Decline of Play and Rise in Children's Mental Disorders - 0 views

  •
Mental health is at a total decline, many high school and college students meet the standard for depression and an anxiety disorder. Studies were done and they showed a dramatic increase in mental illness over the last five decades. The increase in mental illness surprisingly had nothing to do with realistic dangers such as war. Anxiety and depression often correlate with a sense or lack of control

Children's Rights - 1 views

  •
Even though child labor laws were passed decades ago prohibiting employment of underage youngsters, pockets of oppressive child labor exist, literally, on American soil; child farm laborers work long hours in squalid conditions and often receive half the standard minimum wage.
  •
This is a very strong topic. Mostly because children can't really speak up, and we are the ones that need to do it for them. You're childhood should be something you enjoy and not have to struggle through. And the fact that they are always taken advantage of, with low wages and horrible working conditions, makes it an extreme priority in social justice issues.
