Types of Eating Disorders: List of Eating Disorders - HealthyPlace - 0 views

  •
There are several types of eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Anorexia nervosa is pretty self explained but for the ones who don't know it is characterized by starvation and massive weight loss. Bulimia nervosa is characterized as eating a lot of food in a short period of time then getting rid of the food or calories by making yourself throw up, laxatives, or anything that helps to release the food. Binge eating is known as eating uncontrollably passing your hunger limits after being full.

Definitely a common thing I've seen in the fitness industry. People can sometimes get so wrapped up in trying to be lean and fit that they go about it in the wrong ways. They literally workout to the point of exhaustion and then barely refuel their bodies with the necessary nutrients. Which causes more harm than good.
  •
Eating disorders are a tragedy, and a sickness. It is definitely evident in this country, more so than where I come form in Canada, as image is more important in America according to studies, appearance can take someone further than education, which is truly sad. Which leads to more people being self conscious, and more eating disorders.
  •
Eating disorders affect a great deal of American teenagers and young adults, and a big reason is because society sets standards as to what a male or female's ideal body should look like. Rather than trying to live up to society's standards, people should try to live up to a standard of health for their own bodies.
  •
This social issue has been around for many years and it is still a huge issue in the world. I like this article due to the fact that it gives you information on the disorders such as treatments, signs and statistics. All people should be educated on the subject.
  •
I think that this situation is sort of a "hush hush" situation so I think it is great that people are talking out about it. If more people talk about it, then maybe people that are suffering from situations like this can be open about it and about getting help. I also think that people opening up about it, will open up societies eyes and realize that people are suffering from this mostly because of the pressure people have to look how society wants.
  •
People are so wrapped up on having the perfect body that they fail to realize their hurting themselves. Eating disorders are very tragic, but are also very common these days. We start to think that just because one plan worked for someone else it will work for everyone. The truth is, everyone's body is different and reacts differently too.

Treating Eating Disorders - Anorexia and Bulimia Treatment - 1 views

  •
Lots of treatment options are available for the ones who are suffering from these disorders. One is psychotherapy by talking to a psychologist, about 50% of these patients are suffering from depression. Another kind of treatment is a cognitive behavioral therapy where you set goals and helps change unhealthy thought patterns. Nutritional counseling is also a treatment by eating healthier to maintain your body healthy. However, some patients need a medically supervised diet to get back to a healthy weight.
  •
Eating disorders are very common in today's society, but there are patients who have faced eating disorders and overcome them. With the treatment of therapy, counseling, and a supervised diet, many people who suffer from eating disorders can learn how to defeat them and avoid the possibility of facing the disorder again.
  •
The scary part of eating disorders is how deadly they can be. The more a person starves themselves, the more muscles are eaten up; including the heart. I think it would interesting to see how eating disorders manifest in different cultures or minority groups. I know that eating disorders for women can be different from that of men and the method of treating that is also interesting.

Factors That May Contribute to Eating Disorders - 0 views

  •
There are many risk factors to eating disorder, however they are not what cause the disorder but can contribute to developing an eating disorder. Psychological risk factors are low self-esteem, lack of control on life, anxiety, anger, stress. Some social factors to eating disorder are wanting to obtain the "perfect body", the cultures definition of beauty.
  •
I think a huge impact on a person eating habits is how society views people. People are constantly told to look a certain way, do certain things, and it eventually becomes ove whelming. These factors can lead to person having a eating disorder so that they can feel accepted in society.

Animal Rights - 2 views

  •
The article talks about a book on how animals should have rights as in equal consideration. Animals have the ability to suffer as well as a human being. Why should or should not animals have rights?
  • ...2 more comments...

Good points. Are you vegan or vegetarian? Most animals have the ability to feel pain. Adolf Hitler stated that prey species such as deer, elk, gazelle, antelopes, etc. are healthier and can run for longer periods of time and promoted healthy eating (though he was a hippocrate and ate meat himself). When people eat meat they get tired easier, need more water, and have less energy. Without a moral foundation one can justify almost anything. Do you think Christian doctrine is to blame? After all, God told Peter to eat meat. Maybe it was the best choice in order to make peace with the gentiles and not eating meet would have made Peter look aloof. Then again, in Genesis it states that God gave mankind plants to eat and not meat. From a convenient point of view is it practical to only buy products that are not made from animals? Even makeup has animal products in it. What about shoes, clothes, purses, etc? Also, if you have time, I would suggest researching Ralph Smart. Have a good day.
  •
I enjoyed reading this article as well. Animals have very similar traits as humans. They eat, feel, and suffer just as humans do. Why should we strict them of their rights? Just because they do not have a voice to defend themselves does not mean we should ignore the equality they deserve.
  •
I loved this! Animals have such a huge place in my heart and definitely deserve all the rights as us humans do. I hate hearing stories or seeing videos posted on Facebook of animals being neglected.. I don't understand how some people can do such a thing to an animal who cannot even defend themselves. They just want to be loved and nurtured.
  •
The article made some great points. Animals do suffer. They feel pain and fear. Because of this, they definitely should be given rights. Like the article stated, I grew up eating meat, but have made the transition into vegetarianism thanks to my wife who is a vegan. All it took was for me to be educated on where our meat is coming from and the conditions of the animals being slaughtered. If people could read these types of articles and watch documentaries like "Earthlings" and "Cowspiracy" I am sure they might also consider vegetarianism or veganism.

  •
This article shows how increased media exposure affects our bodies and the way we envision our bodies. Talks about effects of media advertising and youth, and how media can influence eating disorders.
  •
Mass media provides a significantly influential context for people to learn about body ideals and the value placed on being attractive. Over 80% of Americans watch television daily. On average, these people watch over three hours per day. American children engage in increasing amounts of media use, a trend fueled largely by the growing availability of internet access through phones and laptops.

16 Million People in the US are Now Vegan or Vegetarian! - The Raw Food World News - 1 views

  •
This article is about how many people are now vegan or vegetarian. It has become very prevalent in the US. Some do it for health reasons while others are vegan because they do not believe in the harming of animals in any way.
  •
I've noticed over the last few years veganism has become increasingly popular. Many of my friends and family members have either tried veganism, wanted to try veganism, or succeeded in becoming vegans! Some have done it to lead a healthier lifestyle, but most of them started after learning about the treatment of the animals raised to be eaten and milked. I've considered vegetarianism in the past but have yet to maintain the willpower necessary to stop eating meat.
  •
I do support what they are doing but some people would have a hard time converting because all of the stuff they eat is meat. I know that they have synthetic meat but I don't know if they would think its the same. there are some stuff I refuse to eat for this reason which is turkey. It may make Thanksgiving difficult for those people but they can still be thankful for their family and friends.

The 19 Biggest Food Problems in America - 2 views

  •
This article shows you through cartoon and facts on how food in America is leading to the reason why obesity is so common here. It shows in one of the summary that a school can consider pizza as a vegetable because of the tomato paste they use as sauce and how we are so used to the GMO in foods that the organic stuff doesn't taste as good to use and makes people not want to buy it, not to mention the higher price of the food that is better for you.

Reading this article was actually really disgusting to think about. Just thinking that tomato paste is a form of vegetable is crazy. We really need to step it up.
  •
To me that wasn't very shocking. I know that mountain dew is banned in Europe because of a toxic chemical(brominated vegetable oil BVO) that is illegal in Europe to use in food. And there are many more I know of. It is scary that in this country nobody really cares about educating people about what they eat. What is worse is that the perception is, that the government doesn't give a damn about what is in our food.
  •
It's so sad to see America keep rising on the list for obesity. It honestly makes me scared to eat certain foods. Foods with GMO's are nearly no where near what they used to be. They used to be so mild and didn't have all of the other crazy chemicals in them. I wish we would go back to how it used to be. I can't wait to get my own house so that I can have my own little chickens and my own garden.

Obesity in Children - 5 views

  •
One third of children in the U. S. is overweight or obese, and this number is continuing to rise. Children have fewer weight-related health and medical problems than adults. However, overweight children are at high risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults, placing them at risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes later in life.
  • ...5 more comments...
  •
Obesity in children in our country happens to have the highest percentage in comparison with other countries. I think we, as parents and we, as responsible adults can change this. We should have in schools mandatory pysical education classes, at least once a week. and it would still make a difference. Also, the school snacks or lunches, the menu needs adjustment and changed to a more nutritional one, not one that is high in calories. Now, I know that kids love fast food, but if that can be limited I think would change something. Sometimes us, the parents we are making this mistake, being in a hurry out of convenience, we buy some fast food and dinner ready. Of course, the child loves it and everyone is happy, but if we do this over and over, the result is child obesity and health issues related to that. The change needs to start with us, as adults in the choices we make.
  •
Diet and activity is so important especially when it comes to children. Adults are supposed to engage children in daily activities and teach them while they are young to have a clean eating diet. The U.S. definitely has the highest rates when it comes to obesity. With all the fast and processed foods around it just makes it convenient for us all to buy.
  •
Parents who let their children become obese are abusive. Also these so called "healthy" menus at schools are often nothing more than calorie restrictions. For example, my former high school Ironwood often only served a slice of pizza and that is it and charged $2.75. Students would instead by 2 slices of pizza from vendors for a dollar each. Also many students just skip lunch all together and snack after they get home from school. Another problem is the budget. Cafeteria workers make very little money and have a small amount of money to spend,. As a result cafeterias serve junk food because it is cheaper. Also many parents use the busy excuse to be neglectful of their children's health.
  •
To say that parents who let their children become obese are abusive have never struggled with weight. But that too is a generalization. There are so many children that are on fighting diseases and are given medication that has side effects of weight gain. One of these drugs is steroids. My daughter is fighting several different battles she was born with. She is on steroids, by the doctor, to fight one of the diseases. She is also a love vegetables and fruits. She swims every week. She takes tap, ballet, jazz and gymnastics. She is overweight, but very fit. Some diseases are ruthless. To say that being overweight is because you eat pizza and that you are unhealthy is just wrong. There are many ways that you can be unhealthy. Looks can be deceiving. Don't judge that book until you read it
  •
High blood pressure at such a young age is horrible. The parents are not the only ones at fault but our society is at fault for allowing to go as far as it has gone. As "aus2127741", states about the school systems lack of nutritional value is absolutely correct, it being disgusting.
  •
Obesity in children is often sad to see but it is becoming very prevalent in American society. In my opinion, a mixture of an extremely sedentary lifestyle as well as poor nutritional choices at school and at home contribute largely to this issue. Because children now have a multitude of indoor activities that don't necessarily get them on their feet and a lack of overall knowledge on what is a decent, balanced diet I'm not really surprised to see this issue skyrocketing.
  •
Obesity is still rising especially because of the pandemic that we are going through which made families quarantine for a long time. It is very sad that the obesity rates only have increased.
