Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal filed a lawsuit in federal court last month against the Obama administration over its use of federal funding and waivers from No Child Left Behind (NCLB) to encourage states to adopt Common Core national standards and tests. With common core becoming the requirements of all schools, this articles lists 10 reasons of common core (pros) and 10 aguements against common core (cons). Every lesson in Common Core is written where the student is taught the intention of why it is being taught. The students are shown what the intent of the lesson is so that there is no miscommunication and they clearly understand the directions. To completely understand they student must know the why, what and how of the standards.

The goal of most educators is to have students achieve major goals in school and proceed on to college and a career with the foundation that is provided in schools. The state has approved a list of standards of education, also called Common Core. Teachers use these standards in the classroom and test the students to discover if these standards are helping the students learn. The students will take a standardized test to evaluate on how well the students have learned from the Common Core. What some see as a surprise attack on states' rights, others know as a carefully thought out education reform. What seems like straight-forward educational reform has sparked plenty of controversy. For some, the Common Core State Standards seemed to come from nowhere, and appeared to be a sneaky attack on states' rights to control local education.

Additionally, children from low-income families were much less likely to be on track in areas such as physical development, social/emotional growth, and school engagement. The report noted a distinct relation between family education and earnings. According to the data collected from families of children under the age of 8, half of the families who earned a higher income had a head of household with at least a 4-year college degree. In contrast, the head of household in the majority of low-income families had at best a high school diploma.

This is such a shame, and I am sure this is very frustrating for both parents and teachers. I really enjoyed helping in my daughters' classes but did see firsthand students who were struggling. Funding for education is not where it should be so classes don't have aides and assistants to spend extra time working with kids who need additional help.
