America's Sex Education Is Failing Our Students - 5 views

  •
This article talks about how Sex Ed in the United States continues to lag behind other industrialized nations. There's a lack of comprehensive sex education, with individual states picking and choosing what schools are allowed to teach and how teachers can respond to questions from students.

I agree that in many ways our sex education can and should be a lot better. i found this to be insightful thank you, good find!
  •
Sex education tells the bare minimum and it's normally directed towards the males. I believe that our sex education system should be more about how to be safe, how to protect yourself and others, and it should be more inclusive.
  •
I agree sex education should be and can be more better. Every one deserves better information and to be more inform.
  •
I would also have to agree that there is a lack of sex education and it could be better.
  •
Sex-Ed could be so much better in many parts of the U.S. The fact that states that teach abstinence only have higher rates of unwanted pregnancy shows that the lack of sexual education is detrimental.
  •
I agree with the lack of sexual education in U.S schools. There definitely needs a push to educate the younger generations on how to take care of themselves and prevent problems for them later on.
  •
I took Sex-Ed in high school and it definitely taught me a lot about things I was clueless about but some of the information was very contradicting like stay abstinent but be safe if you do.
  •
I think that Sex-Ed should be available to all students since so many teens just don't know how their bodies work. I've never even had the option to take Sex-Ed, but I think I know enough about it.
  •
I agree with this article and how students should be allowed to take Sex-Ed in order to be informed of their own bodies. It should also be just as important as keeping the opposite sex safe as well.
  •
I couldn't agree more with the notion that our country's sex education is failing the youth of America. It has gotten better over the years due to the education through the internet. But in many southern states, there is still a huge impact on teen pregnancies.
  •
It's really heartbreaking to me how true this is. I was disgusted but also grateful for my sexual education in school. It was graphic and hard to swallow, but important. I hope that we can be less immature as a society about this and rise up to protect and inform our youth.

Education Is the Key to a Better Quality of Life for Women - 0 views

  •
Education is the key to a better quality life in America. This is particularly important for our country's women because, though women have dominated our workforce, they are often set back by poor life decisions, personal crisis, or just do not have the resources available to succeed. The improvement of education will be a joint effort for everyone involved, including the individual, community, and government leadership.

Foster Care Advocates | Foster Coalition - 0 views

  •
Many children are in foster care. There is a high volume of children who stay in foster care for a long period of time and sometimes "age out". Aging out is when the minor turns 18years of age and is still in foster care. The social justice issue is that these children have a higer chance of going to orison, human trafficking and pregnancy. We need to do something as a society to help these children achieve something in there life. There are so many children who still get abused in the foster system as well. What needs to be done to prevent this from happening? More home visits to foster homes, better screening, and maybe even just a all around better system.

Lesbian and Gay Rights 101 - 1 views

  •
This website looks at gay rights to adopt. Because adoption is such a large topic, I think this is unique since it looks at gay and lesbian rights. The site outlines the issue and discusses each side.
  •
Not all states give homosexual couples the same adoption rights as heterosexual couples. There is no statistical data or research to show why gay parents would be any different than straight parents.
  •
Part 2: Search engine used: http://www.metacrawler.com/ URL: http://civilliberty.about.com/od/gendersexuality/ig/Lesbian-and-Gay-Rights-101/Gay-Adoption-Rights.htm Original: 1. "A child is better off with one father and one mother." Even if this claim were true (and there's no evidence that it is), it would be irrelevant. States allow adoption by individuals, and not just by married couples, precisely because they recognize that any healthy, stable family environment is a better option than the foster care system. Paraphrase: "A child is better off with one mom and one dad." There is no evidence that this statement is true, however providing evidence would not make it any more relevant. States not only allow married couples to adopt, but single parents too. This has something to do with recognizing that any environment that is healthy and stable is a more realistic option than foster care.

This article briefly discusses on how in 2013 the Affordable Care Act was going to assist many poor families. It would help these families be able to afford better health insurance at a low monthly premium.

Thanks for sharing this. I was surprised with the percentages among minority groups as well as just the overall percentages especially in Texas. This author is really good because she is direct and to the point and has a very clever way of closing the article as well.

Should Kids Wear School Uniforms - 2 views

  •
This website talks about the different opinions of whether or not kids should wear school uniforms. This article says that school uniforms may help prevent violence and make a better learning environment. The article also gives other possible benefits of wearing school uniforms.

This link is not working for me. I wish it did. My kids used to attend a school where uniforms were required. Now they attend a school with no uniform policy. I would be interested to read this article and see another person's perspective and how it compares to my own.
  •
I personally have never been a fan of school uniforms for my own children but I can understand how they are warranted in some districts. Some parents may not be able to affront the things other students have making them feel inferior; this allows for everyone to maintain the same sense of self without being picked on.
  •
I can see both sides to this issue but honestly I think that children should be able to pick what they want to wear appropriate of course but to be able to have that voice through clothing when they might not have a voice in general can do a lot of a child I think.

Non-GMO Project - 0 views

  •
Everything consumers and retailers need to know about the non-GMO project. Standard are used to assist people to better understanding and to affect change with in the agricultural industry. Helps with verification of products.
  •
This link doesn't lead to an article. GMOs face a lot of debate but after a lot of testing there has yet to be any solid proof that they cause any harm to the people consuming GMO foods. In fact, all bananas are GMO's. The practice of modifying crops to yield more food has been happening for as long as humans have grown crops. Companys that make the seeds are pretty awful. They treat farmers horribly.

20 Life Skills Not Taught In School. - 1 views

  •
I found this article to be my favorite, in the article it lists 20 life skills not taught in school, from communication and thinking to learning how to build credit and get insurance. This made me really think how I didn't learn any of those skills that I use everyday now when I was in school. It even talks about how the bible, cooking, guns, and finding a job all play a big part in adult life.

Wow, great find! I have three children and my husband and I are always trying to teach them just about everything listed in this article. Years ago many of those things were taught in some degree. Now it seems like they don't touch much on these at all. I know there are classes when you are older you can go too, but I think all of these subject could be taught to some degree in the classroom setting. I also think that if they were maybe our economy would be better, because our future adult citizens (kids in school) will have a better understanding of what it takes and how to get a head to be a responsible citizen.
  •
Thanks for sharing this, you're right this is a great article! There are so many skills that the public education system is not teaching, yet they are super important and critical for everyone to acquire.
  •
I think this article is really cool. It shows really important skills that aren't taught in school that you don't even realize till you actually think about it. Many day to day things aren't taught in school but things that we will never use are taught.

Obama Care Dismantled - 1 views

What does the dismantling of Obamacare mean for Americans? Is there going to be a better alternative? Should President Donald Trump undo what he did?

I am also curious to see how this is going to change. What can be done differently or offered if it is dismantled?

Gender Inequality Index (GII) | Human Development Reports - 1 views

  •
This website is about gender inequality especially towards women. It shows how women are treated in certain areas and how negative it is towards girls. It states how men have better choices and women don't really get a choice. Inequality is a big problem and many people don't see it, and it aims towards women and how they still to this day don't have equality.

Your education is not an equal opportunity - 1 views

  •
Thirty years after San Antonio v. Rodriguez and 60 years after Brown v. Board of Education, we still remain in the same position. Parents such as Tanya Mcdowell and Kelley Williams-Bolar want to send their children to a better school so they feel they need to break the law and lie about their kid's registration and they become convicted felons. Even though the matter of blacks v. whites is becoming better, the issue of rich v. poor has reached high levels.

Bullying by peers has effects later in life - 3 views

  •
New research conducted by Dr. Dieter Wolke shows the lasting affects of bullying on youth. Researchers found that conflict amongst peers creates stress-related issues such as anxiety and depression. A call to action is asked among communities to find better resources for mental health.

This kind of article should be spread around to help decrease and get rid of bullies. Many just think that it's only teasing but they don't know that can stay with you forever. This article shows that we do stay with lasting affects when bullied.
  •
Restorative Justice is fine when you have a student who is willing to put forth the change and in turn is a positive role-model for their peers. Sometimes, it's just a pat on the back and the student is left to deal with the challenges of being in a school where bullying is tolerated by their peers. Sometimes these pre-teens and teens have some serious mental issues that need to be addressed outside of school. It infuriates me that the innocent, kind and quiet kids, become targets for these kids. Bullying is a power play by some very manipulative children. I vote for serious consequences on bullies. Kick them out of school period! 1st offence, your counseled, 2nd offence there is the door!

I'm often lost in thought regarding my young daughter, she is still a ways from attending elementary but it seems that with time the issue of bullying doesn't appear to get better. I hope by the time she is old enough to attend there are better practices in place for schools and students to recognize and stop this behavior.
