Since 2004, many dogs that were meant to be put to sleep have been visiting the Lansing Correctional Facility. The animals are trained by inmates serving time for a variety of different crimes including forgery, robbery, rape, and murder. As a result of the program, over 1,000 dogs have received new homes. Prison Pet Partnership is a program at a women's prison set up to help people with disabilities. It uses animals that are rescued to help rehabilitate female inmates through vocational learning. The program teaches women inmates how to groom the homeless animals in order prepare them to be placed as service animals for disabled people. The program helps the inmates learn new skills, the animals find homes, and the disabled population.
