Facebook Will Needs Permission From WhatsAppers To Use Data - 1 views

  •
This is a very big deal - most times when apps get bought out, their privacy policies are largely dismissed or completely changed. Due to the massive popularity and international use of WhatsApp, this is not a possibility. So the question is, if there will be no ads or information selling, how will Facebook make a profit with this aquisition? How can we as interactives sell this product?

Yeah, Facebook is notoriously uninterested in people's privacy, but they seem to be in a bit of a bind here. Of course Zuckerberg has always said "the revenue funds the product, not he other way around" - in direct contrast to basically every company ever.

I literally had no clue what this was before I read this article. Really cool, and I am interested to see what occurs in the future with it.

Kind of a funny list of pros and cons of social media. Its meant to be serious but a lot of the points completely contradict each other. No seems to be able to decide on on thing.

Mobile App Go Dish Brings Dynamic Pricing To The Restaurant World | TechCrunch - 1 views

  •
Cheap food? And no crowds? Hot Damn! This would work well for a variety of businesses, not just the restaurant industry.
  •
Yep, I think this is great. It is probably more thought than a lot of people are used to putting into these decisions, but tools like this have been popping up for a few years. The week where we cover Recommendations has some stuff like this.

Timing is everything -- and mobile advertising is no different | GamesBeat | Games | by... - 1 views

  •
timing when and where your ad shows up in mobile can be the most important part of the ad.
  •
This is a dense article but for that reason, all the more important to read carefully. This part surprised me in a good way: "By waiting until the user has finished their activity, closing an app, or is switching to another task and then showing a relevant, media-rich full screen, a Postitial ad to say "thank you and this session was sponsored by brand X" has proven to be around five times more engaging than traditional interstitial advertising."

Car interfaces leave much to be desired - 0 views

Modern technology could make cars a magical experience. But no one in the auto industry seems to care enough to make it happen. (By the way, "Mobile" is much more than phones. We will discuss this.)

Sharing contact Info between mobile devices without an app - 0 views

  •
A great idea, but it seems so difficult to put into play - instead of just sharing one's contact information, one must dial a specific number and also already have the other person's phone number, to receive their additional contact info. While ideally this may be a great way to share information without having said information saved in a database, it seems waaay too difficult to use in actuality, when there are apps out there that do this quickly and efficiently.

Agreed - they identified a clear problem to solve but I'm not sure this is a solution that will take hold.

11 Shocking New Social Media Statistics in America - 0 views

  •
Number nine is the most interesting to me. It's not that people obsess. They just have downtime or choose to take a break from what they're doing. Advertisers need to take advantage of downtime.
  •
Agreed. It's not necessarily unhealthy behavior, depending on what they're doing. And either way it's an opportunity for brands.
  •
A couple other interesting things: "It's not going to rebound, which is why Foursquare's play is to be the new Yelp." - I disagree. Foursquare is probably going to fade away but the check-in, in some form another (almost certainly evolved) will probably follow the Gartner Hype Cycle - excitement, "failure" and then long-term entrenchment. "Last year, 68% of Americans using social networks said that none of those networks had an influence on their buying decisions. This year, just 36% said that there was no influence. Now, 47% say Facebook has the greatest impact on purchase behavior(compared to just 24% in 2011)." - any researcher worth their salt knows that people are very bad at predicting their own behavior. I hate seeing research that says "people say they are unlikely to X" because asking them point blank is the worst way to predict it.

The Future of Social Media Is Mobile Tribes - 0 views

Everyone has different needs, and the social landscape is shifting accordingly.
  •
One good (though obvious) point they make is that each of these platforms fits into the life of the user in a different way. Five years ago it was somewhat winner-take-all in terms of user base, but that's no longer the case. Understanding the cultural differences across platforms is also really important to developing concepts for those platforms.
