Maps can make a point resonate with readers and this collection aims to do just that. Hopefully some of these maps will surprise you and you'll learn something new. A few are important to know, some interpret and display data in a beautiful or creative way, and a few may even make you chuckle or shake your head."

"Capturing the Moment: Webcamming, Sexting and Screen-Grabbing Teenagers have become their own paparazzi. Four out of five teens have cellphone cameras. From selfies to food porn and photo-bombing, kids are constantly "capturing the moment." They rarely seek permission from their subjects-making what were once private moments now very public. "

The Teacher's Guide To Twitter | Edudemic - 0 views

  • Twitter has proven itself to be an indispensable tool for educators around the globe. Whatever skill level you may be, Twitter is downright fun and worth your time.
  • For many teachers making a foray into the edtech world, Twitter is an excellent tool for consuming and learning.
  • Many are also harnessing Twitter as a part of their PLN (personal learning network) to connect, share, and network.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • The best way to get the most out of Twitter is to use it.
  • When you’re just getting started on Twitter (or perhaps trying to add to or refine your feed), a resource for educational hashtags or guides to great accounts to follow are excellent resources to point you in the right direction.
  • If you always find interesting things on Twitter, such as lesson plans, don’t forget to share your awesome resources, too.
  • Just like going to the gym once every two weeks isn’t going to keep you in peak physical condition, participating in Twitter #hashtag chats and interacting only occasionally isn’t going to make your Twitter community very robust.
  •
Something to get teachers into Twitter as a means to seek personalized professional growth.

How to Get a Job at Google - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
"For every job, though, the No. 1 thing we look for is general cognitive ability, and it's not I.Q. It's learning ability. It's the ability to process on the fly. It's the ability to pull together disparate bits of information. We assess that using structured behavioral interviews that we validate to make sure they're predictive.""

Why the war over math is distracting and futile - The Globe and Mail - 2 views

  • The big questions on today’s blackboard is how to make math relevant for tomorrow,
  • “At the beginning of the 20th century, Latin was a required subject – it was seen as fundamental,” he says, to show how, as society changes, so does what it values. “By the end of century, Latin was gone. What will mathematics be by the end of this century?”
  • Dr. Small is showing a third option for two-number multiplication when a father raises his hand and asks: “But what’s the most efficient way?”“What’s your definition of efficient?” Dr. Small responds. “I think it’s probably the calculator.”
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • But so it goes. The one side says, “drill and kill.” The other says “drill for skill.” Basically, though, just about every mathematician and math education researcher who was interviewed for this story agrees that the perfect math class should have a mix of skills and problem solving. They just can’t agree on the amounts of each, when to add them, and what to skip.

"It's hard to learn to play the piano just by watching a video of a great pianist. Interactive learning is much more effective! oppia.org helps you make embeddable interactive educational "explorations" that let people learn by doing."

This could be great for flipped classrooms. The kids would need to be able to read and have certain level of computer literacy, but I reckon it would work in and outside of the classroom. Great find Justin!
