What Project-Based Learning Is - and What It Isn't | PROJECT BASED LEARNING | MindShift... - 2 views

  • The term “project-based learning” gets tossed around a lot in discussions about how to connect students to what they’re learning. Teachers might add projects meant to illustrate what students have learned, but may not realize what they’re doing is actually called “project-oriented learning.” And it’s quite different from project-based learning, according to eighth grade Humanities teacher Azul Terronez.

Personalize Learning: Put the "Person" in "Personalization" - 2 views

  • It's time to put the "person" in "personalization" and stop the conversations going in directions that take us off course.
  • It's not about technology. It's not about the test or improving test scores. It's really not about school. It's all about the learner, how they learn best and that what they learn is meaningful and for a purpose.
  • Teachers and learners can work together to develop learning goals and design activities that are authentic and relevant for the learner so they are engaged in learning. Learning has to have a context that learners can grasp and understand.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • eachers also think they have to teach like a champion because they are the ones responsible for the learning. Don't you think that this is backwards?
  • When we put the focus on each learner and how they can own and drive their learning, then we see engaged, self-directed learners with agency.
  • This is just the beginning of a new world of learning and it's time to put the "Person" back in "Personalization."
  • They probably don't realize that their digital footprint is actually a "digital tattoo" that can never be removed.
  • If we teach as we taught yesterday,we rob our children of tomorrow.”
  • There are companies that frame "personalized learning" as adaptive learning systems using algorithms to choose the right path for learning. So we're going to end this blog emphasizing learners need to be the ones who choose their path with their teacher guiding the process. It is about encouraging learners to have a voice and choice in their learning. It's happening now all over the world.
  • When we focus on learning and not on curriculum, teachers roles change. We still can teach to standards but let's involve learners in the process and give them a voice so they own the learning.

"It's about learners having a voice and choice in their learning ... leading to engaged and self-directed learners with agency..."
  • They also need to understand who they are, how they learn best, and how to be global digital citizens.

The Ultimate Guide to Gamifying Your Classroom | Edudemic - 0 views

  • Gamification is the process by which teachers use video game design principals in learning environments. The effects are increased student engagement, class wide enjoyment of academic lessons, and high levels of buy-in, even from your most reluctant learners.
  • Components of Gamifying the Classroom There are several aspects of video-game design that can be incorporated into the gamified classroom. Here are several:
  • Points: In video games, users gain points as the travel through their quests. The more time they invest in the game the more points they earn
  • ...12 more annotations...
  • Badges: Badges are public recognition of achievement, with each one designed with a specific achievement in mind.
  • Levels: As a game goes on, players progress through levels that get progressively more difficult. In the classroom, levels could be lessons, or even units of study.
  • Appointments: Thanks to the Internet, people playing a video game in the US can sign in and team up with players all over the world.
  • Bonuses: Most games have hidden, unexpected rewards. Bonuses help drive player loyalty and keep them playing day in and day out.
  • Infinite play: In many video games, players keep playing until they finish a level. They might lose points, or access to valuable items if they are attacked, but they are still able to keep playing.
  • How to Gamify Your Classroom
  • Backwards planning: Any teacher familiar with Understanding By Design has already got a leg up in gamification.
  • Use what’s available: Classcraft is a free, online educational role-playing game that teachers can personalize for their lessons.
  • Gamify one aspect: Rather than attempting to create an entire game with quests and hidden bonuses, start small.
  • Establish a marketplace: Allow students to buy, sell, swap, trade with each other and with you. Maybe students can swap a badge for an open-book test, or use points to purchase a homework-free night.
  • Allow leveling up: If a student has mastered the material in a lesson, offer fun and engaging extension wor
  • Just dive in: It can be difficult to know when your gamified classroom plan is ready for students, but the best advice is to just try it out.

The 'Outstanding' school fallacy. by Carl Hendrick | Staffrm - 3 views

  • 1. Ownership of results
  • We now talk about *our* results, not *their* results.
  • 2. A culture of Spoon-feeding
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • In a culture that audits itself purely in terms of readily quantifiable measures against often arbitrary targets (with very real consequences for the teacher as opposed to the student) the inevitable outcome will be for teachers to do 'whatever it takes' to hit those targets, and this has led to some of the most unethical practices ever seen and yet those same schools are deemed 'outstanding.'
  • The "shrinking of intellectual aspiration.
  • Too many schools now are bastions of anti-intellectualism that exist only to hit targets and where being clever and culturally aware comes second to passing an exam

What Project-Based Learning Is - and What It Isn't | MindShift - 3 views

  • For Terronez, the goal is to always connect classroom learning to its applications in the outside world.
  • If you inspire them to care about it and draw parallels with their world then they care and remember,”
  • takes a lot of diligent planning by the teacher to design projects that give students space to explore themes and real-world resonance to make it meaningful for them. And it takes trust in the students, as well.

  • hen students arrived on the first day of school they found an empty classroom. The first project Terronez asked his students to undertake was designing their own learning space, one that would support experience-based, collaborative learning.
  • Terronez asked his students to design an iPod app that would solve a real-world problem. They came up with an idea, designed the display icon, figured out how users would navigate the app, prototyped sample tabs, then pitched their mock-up to an audience.
  • In a project exploring air pressure, Terronez’s students built their own hovercrafts using a leaf blower as the engine. When the hovercrafts worked, the students designed 3D representations of themes from “Freedom Fighters,” a Discovery School education video about racial struggles featuring the stories of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. Their creations were featured in a hovercraft parade on Election Day.

Take a minute to make a group shared comment sharing a lesson you did and where it would fall on the matrix.
  • The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells as illustrated below.

I hosted a Hangout to plan a shared experience with a francophone from Cameroon who writes for Thot-Cursus and is a part of Global Voices en français. He spoke to my class about social media and tech in the classroom. My students posed questions based on his articles. Later in the unit, students were let loose with a framework and they were able to choose the best tech to achieve the learning outcomes. And I forever have a network at Global Voices en français who will be making regular appearances in my courses.

How To Implement Blended Learning | Edudemic - 1 views

  • Blended learning can be a great way to make use of whatever technology tools you do have, rather than needing specific technology that you don’t have. Blended learning doesn’t require you to have a 1:1 classroom, a certain number of iPads, or particular software, though you can put any and all of those things to use as you choose. Thus, blended learning covers a lot of ground – and in the process it helps to make learning more engaging, effective, and efficient.
  • Careful planning and a strong understanding of blended learning will help make the transition much more smooth.  Enter: the handy infographic below. It takes a look at how to set up a blended learning environment, some of the features of a great blended learning program, and some other tidbits of information. Keep reading to learn more!
