Good points, but completely misses the most powerful part of this - learning with others.
but, from a branding expert, I guess this is primarily what they are concerned with - protecting and promoting one's brand. The sad part in this is that for some admins, it might actually take a piece in Forbes by a marketing person to catch their attention rather than the countless educators who having been promoting this message... and more.
If you think that the website Maps of World offers a huge collection of maps, you would be correct. If you guessed that the maps were of continents, nations, states, and cities then you would be right about that as well. What I discovered about Maps of World that I didn't expect was the amount of facts and information that accompanied their maps. Included with each map is the history, the demographics, the economic data and other useful facts of the continent/nation/state you looked up. They also feature road maps, printable maps, route planners, railroad maps, physical maps, and "Top Ten" themed maps. Maps of World is a great site for maps but it is so much more, it is a useful tool for learning about nations and their history.

In spite of the fact that web 2.0-enabled tools and services are supposed to be easy to set up and simple to use, some faculty in higher ed never got that memo. They don't know a tweet from a tag, identify Ning as a four-letter word for "river in China"; and would probably guess that Squidoo is a friend of SpongeBob and Patrick. This guide shares foolproof, unintimidating methods for incorporating social media apps into the classroom-guaranteed to work for even the most squeamish scholar.
Quick: what was the most widely-used form of media in 2008? If you guessed Internet news sites, blogs, or social networks, you'd be way off. Network TV news (NBC, CBS, ABC) is still used by the highest percentage of adult Internet users, with local newspapers and local TV news occupying the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, in a recently released survey from Ketchum.
While old media is still on top, the trends in the survey, which has been conducted each of the last three years, point to a familiar story: media consumption habits are quickly changing. That said, some forms of new media are performing much better than others. For example:
- Blogs are now used by 24% of Internet users, up from 13% in 2006
- Social networks are now used by 26% of Internet users, up from 17% in 2006
- Videocasts are now used by 11% of Internet users, up from 6% in 2006
Slower growers include:
- RSS feeds: growing from 5 to 7 percent
- Podcasts: growing from 5 to 7 percent
- Business news sites: flat at 8 percent
Often, the first knowledge a teacher has of an English Language Learner (ELL) in the classroom is his name on a roster. It may look different from typical U.S. names. You may not know how to pronounce it. Sometimes you may be able to guess what language an ELL speaks by looking at his name and sometimes not.
How can you prepare to best welcome this learner?
Last school year I would dedicate Wednesday's to sharing a Wiki or a few Wikis that I thought were of value. Looking back, it has been almost 11 months since I did a Wiki Wednesday post, so I guess I have a lot of catching up to do. So I present 10 Wikis that I have recently discovered that I think are worth sharing
