Elif Bilgin - Extraordinary People Changing the Game - 0 views

  •
Plastic destroys our ecosystem yet we keep reproducing them. It's as if we are only after making life more convenient for the present and not at the very least concerned about the fate of our children, who will basically inherit this planet. It's easy to just ignore this for now especially if we delude ourselves with false hope that someone else will figure out a way to solve a major problem such as pollution. Elif Bilgin, a gifted teen from Istanbul, isn't too selfish to just think of the now. She made bio-plastics out of banana peels. To read more about Elif Bilgin visit www.thextraordinary.org

"We have to link real learning to real lives," Johanna Riddle writes in the Introduction to her book. "If we genuinely want to reach our students where they are, show them how to apply technology meaningfully and substantively, and encourage independent, criticial, and creative thinking, we must be prepared to help them navigate life in the twenty-first century."

What are the characteristics we would expect to see in a successful 21st century educator? Well, we know they are student-centric, holistic, and they're teaching about how to learn as much as teaching about the subject area. We know, too, that they must b

Internet Safety for Families and Children - 0 views

The Internet is a useful and important part of our daily lives. Many can't remember how we handled even the most mundane tasks without online assistance. How did we even survive when we were kids? :-) However, along with the good, there is bad. Children and teens (but not their parents!) are very well versed in using the Internet, including web pages, blogs, uploading and downloading information, music and photos, etc. They are also trusting. This presentation will give an overview of the Internet and the inherent dangers. Learn the realities and dangers of ``virtual communities'' websites your kids frequent like Xanga.com, MySpace.com and FaceBook.com. Learn about the persistence of information on the net and Google hacking. Learn the differences between a wiki, blog, Instant Messaging, text messaging, and chat. Learn the Internet slang, key warning signs, and tips for Parents and Kids. This talk is for anyone who has a child, who knows a child, or who ever was a child!

The Future of learning Institutions in a digital age - 0 views

  •
    * "We contend that the future of learning institutions demands a deep, epistemological appreciation of the profundity of what the Internet offers humanity as a model of a learning institution"...and * "participatory learning is about a process and not always a final product"...and * "We advocate institutional change because we believe our current formal educational institutions are not taking enough advantage of the modes of digital and participatory learning available to students today"...and * "Networked learning, however, goes beyond these conversational rules to include correcting others, being open to being corrected oneself, and working together to fashion workarounds when straightforward solutions to problems or learning challenges are not forthcoming"

Sir Ken Robinson - 2 views

Passion! Ken Robinson's site and promo new book: The Element-How finding your passion changes everything. I often feel that the guidance during school would best be about how to access who we are, how we each tick and what we can best offer the world. How can we best serve? And education as the embodiment (model) of "how can we best serve you?" (each human individually to be the best (me) we can be).

American Cultures 2.0 - 0 views

  • If we want students to become citizens who understand their role as a citizen then we need to teach them to understand and respect the power of questions.
  • Without the freedom and courage to ask that paradigm shifting question then progress and innovation would cease to exist and we would become slaves to our past and out-dated solutions.
  • The power of just one word can totally change the meaning of something as intrinsic as national identity.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • The more students have an opportunity to read, speak and write the more they are going to understand the power of words.
  • The moment students craft words meant not just for the teacher and a few other peers, but for the wider world, is the moment students learn that a misplaced, mispronounced, or misspelled word has consequences far beyond a grade. These authentic learning opportunities are crucial to prepare students for the new realities of a more global and transparent world.
  • Students (and teachers) need to understand that everything they do communicates, whether they know what they are communicating or not.
  • Once students really figure out who they are and what they stand for then they can more comfortably be themselves. However, an important social skill that many students have difficulty grasping is knowing appropriate social norms in various settings.
  • Anyone can be a teacher... if you are alert and willing to learn from others. We need to teach students to be alert and willing to learn from sources other than textbooks. We need to teach students how to create and cultivate learning from a personal learning network, in order to extend the traditional capabilities of school from the limited hours of the school day to the unlimited hours beyond the school day. The informal classroom of life offers lessons far more valuable than the classroom if only we are open to learning from each other each and every day.

Derek's Blog » Challenges, changes and trends 2011 - 0 views

Interesting post from Derek Wenmouth, who asks: * Who are our learners? * What are we preparing them for? * How are we preparing them for this? * What are the implications of connectivity for learning and schooling? This is good, and all very well, but... A few weeks ago I met a young lad, still at school, smartly dressed in a business suit, making a reasonable job of selling himself. Except that for reasons best known to himself he deemed it acceptable to not only chew gum the entire time, but to do so in a way that allowed me to see the contents of his mouth throughout. I realiuse this is off-message, as it were, but surely one of the most basic skills we should be teaching young people, by example as much as anything, is how to present yourself?

Why Are Finland's Schools Successful? | People & Places | Smithsonian Magazine - 26 views

  • “Children from wealthy families with lots of education can be taught by stupid teachers,” Louhivuori said, smiling. “We try to catch the weak students. It’s deep in our thinking.”
  • “We prepare children to learn how to learn, not how to take a test,”
  • “Play is important at this age,” Rintola would later say. “We value play.”
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Compulsory schooling does not begin until age 7. “We have no hurry,” said Louhivuori. “Children learn better when they are ready. Why stress them out?”
  • “It was simply the idea that every child would have a very good public school. If we want to be competitive, we need to educate everybody. It all came out of a need to survive.”

High-Tech Teaching in a Low-Tech Classroom - 47 views

As 21st-century teachers, we are expected to help students master the technological tools they will use in college and the workplace. But in many districts, the one-computer classroom is not extinct. So how can we do a lot with a little? How can we best use limited resources to support learning and familiarize students with technology?
