  • Students who won lotteries to attend charter middle schools performed, on average, no better in mathematics and reading than their peers who lost out in the random admissions process and enrolled in nearby regular public schools, according to a national study released today.
  • On average, though, the charter middle schools in the study enrolled a lower percentage of students who are eligible for free and reduced-price school meals than charters nationally, and served smaller percentages of students scoring below proficiency levels on state exams than their national peers.

Und das an einer Schule, in der die Hälfte der Schüler Migrationshintergrund hat und einige mit Sprachproblemen kämpfen.

Es entstehen neue Lehrformen, welche die Eigenverantwortlichkeit und Selbständigkeit der Schüler fördern. Gerade Blogs sind so einfach zu handhaben, dass weder das Einrichten mithilfe von Webhostern noch das Bloggen selbst viel Einarbeitungszeit beansprucht. For example, we absolutely have to have a new math/science/reading/social studies program. The teachers can’t teach without one, so picking a new one is going to fall in quadrant 1, and ultimately, innovation gets put off until tomorrow. However, innovation has an urgency all its own and those that don’t place innovation as a priority will find themselves displaced.

In fact, they found, learning becomes better if conditions are arranged so that students make errors.
  • People remember things better, longer, if they are given very challenging tests on the material, tests at which they are bound to fail. In a series of experiments, they showed that if students make an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve information before receiving an answer, they remember the information better than in a control condition in which they simply study the information. Trying and failing to retrieve the answer is actually helpful to learning. It’s an idea that has obvious applications for education, but could be useful for anyone who is trying to learn new material of any kind.
