A Video Lecture Capture (VLC) system was implemented to address issues relating to retention, and to reverse the trend of high drop, failure, and withdrawal (DFW) rates. The purpose of this study was to examine student perceptions of how using VLC impacted their academic performance. Areas of interest surrounded students’ perceived benefits, value, and helpfulness of using the system. In addition, the study probed the concern of many about the impact using VLC would have upon class attendance. Finally the study compared students’ perceptions about their performance as a result of using VLC with faculty perceptions about their students’ performance as a result of using VLC. It was hypothesized that there is a significant difference between student and faculty perceptions.

Sifteo founders Jeevan Kalanithi and David Merrill previewed the cubes at TED 2009 when they were grad students at MIT. The cubes debuted at CES this year. The design marries classic tactility with new hardware and software. “Sifteo cubes are the first gaming solution to deliver truly hands-on play,” Merrill said. “[The cubes combine] the latest in embedded computing and sensing technology with a timeless play style.”

Apple’s iOS version of Safari still won’t support Flash, this is a change in how Flash content is delivered to iOS devices. Adobe’s Flash Media Server 4.5 will detect what type of device is attempting to view the content and will stream Flash videos in a format that is supported by iOS. As of right now only Flash videos are supported in Flash Media Server 4.5

There have been attempts in the past to convert Flash into HTML5 in hopes to bringing Flash to iOS, but none of those attempts have brought Flash to Safari

The open source learning management system Moodle has a new mobile companion. Developers at Moodle HQ have released a free app for iOS designed to work with Moodle 2.1 or later.

My Moodle isn't a replacement for the Moodle interface; rather, it just provides some additional tools tailored specifically for mobile users. These include the ability to: Capture video, still images, and audio and upload those to Moodle; Upload images and video from users' existing libraries; E-mail and message participants in users' courses; Add notes about users; Add course participants to users' iPhone contact lists; Get help through MoodleDocs; and Access the full Moodle site. (A separate login for the Web version is required with the version of the mobile app.)

Facebook is not banned from the classroom. Facebook pages or groups established for classroom use are allowed — as is most other social media. However, teachers are strictly forbidden to communicate with students through any personal means, such as private instant messages or through personal Facebook profiles. According to the advisory, teachers must decline student-initiated friend requests, and never initiate a friend request with a student. The college asserts that when a teacher and a student become friends in an online environment, the dynamic between them is forever changed. An invisible line between professional and personal is crossed, which can lead to strictly forbidden informal conversations.
