20 Ways High Schools Are Using Twitter In The Classroom - 0 views

  • BACKCHANNEL DISCUSSION TOOL High school students can sometimes be quite introverted and shy in the classroom, but outspoken online. Additionally, some high school classes move through discussions quickly, and not all students find the opportunity to speak up in class. Both of these issues are addressed as high school classes encourage a Twitter backchannel discussion, in which quiet, shy, and unable-to-get-a-word-in-edgewise students are able to speak up in class without actually speaking up in class, sharing their comments, insights, and even relevant links through Twitter as the discussion goes on. Educators have found that Twitter backchannel discussions provide for more interaction not just in the classroom, but beyond, as students often enjoy further carrying on the conversation even after class time is over.

Principal Sheninger at New Milford High School in New Jersey started using Twitter to keep in touch with parents, but found its real value in reaching out to other educators and collaborating with them. He is able to use the tool to find new ideas, new resources, and ideas for professional development

  • Consistently create, contribute, and reinforce service and value.
  • Don’t get lost in translation. Ensure your communication and intent is clear and that your involvement maps to objectives created for the social web.

Thoughts on Flash - 1 views

  • Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true.
  • Flash is a closed system.
  • Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Flash has not performed well on mobile devices
  • To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power.
  • The difference is striking: on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained.
  • Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover.
  • letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform.
  • Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications.
  • But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.
  •
According to steve the no. 1 reason Apple not supporting Flash is that it does not support multiple touch screen when most modern device is supporting.

Challenges of Interface Design for Mobile Devices » Yahoo! User Interface Blog (YUIBlog) - 1 views

  • designing for a mobile device can lead to a solution that is worlds different than its desktop equivalent.
  • Context of Use
  • Users have a very specific need and desire to accomplish their goal in the easiest and fastest way possible. This fact alone helps explain why mobile interfaces are designed the way they are
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Feature sets are optimized to streamline common use cases Use typography to show hierarchy and importance Features are progressively displayed Large buttons are used to make interactions actionable
  • Designing with awareness to context will yield a more atomic design that instead of introducing users to a proverbial blank canvas, will guide them toward accomplishing important tasks. Having to deal with slow data speeds, high network latency, smaller screens, and an unpredictable mode of use only reinforce the need to isolate an application’s essential features and offer access to them when contextually appropriate. Next time you design an interface for a mobile device, remember to consider context of use and context of the medium as part of your design strategy.
  • Dealing with phone numbers and other mobile friendly data Displaying information on a smaller screen Not using a cursor Device speed and network latency
  • Context of the medium
  • To design an experience that can gracefully coexist with others tools, one needs to understand what kind of media can be processed by specific mobile internet browsers, and when onboard applications are launched.

Interview with Dr Ashley on Web 2.0 technology and its relevance to teaching - 0 views

My instructor from Penn State U shared his thought on the podcast. "I was very intrigued by his reference to Alan Kay when he talked about how the tools shape us via our interactions with them. Kay was (and is) most definitely one of the most visionary and original thinkers when it comes to technology and its applications. To be sure, this point about how the tools shape us is a very good one to emphasize. Tools are not innocuous things and metacognitive awareness can help both teachers and learners think about how their perceptions of ideas, concepts, etc are influenced by the tools they use to express their understandings of these things that they encounter." Smartphone Usage Statistics and Trends 2013 [Infographic] | AnsonAlex - 0 views

  • Mobile and smartphone usage is most prevalent in the morning and evening. Smartphone users tend to glance at and skim over emails more than desktop users who tend to fully read emails. Smartphone users around the world tend to use their smartphones at home more than anywhere else. From October 2010 to October 2012, email open rates on smartphones increased by 300%. Mobile email creates twice as many conversions as social and search. The average price of an order placed from a mobile device is higher than the average order from a tablet or desktop. Mobile and smartphone usage is higher Thursday – Monday than on Tuesday or Wednesday.
  •
As we use our smartphones more and more, our patterns of email reading and replying change. We could take note of these patterns, especially if doing surveys or email marketing campaigns, for better responses.

Push Me, Pull Me: Push-Pull in Social Media - 0 views

  • Push strategy
  • Pull Strategy
  • Push-Pull in Social Media
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Twitter is the prime example of where both strategies can exist, hand in hand. Many of the brands you follow are using both a push and pull strategy to engage their followers and also reach a small targeted group of people at the same time.
  • strong pull strategy here because they’re making use of the hashtags #sears and #tools, which is targeting those who may be following that hashtag as well as tweeting out a link to the tool itself with promotional copy
  • Facebook advertising is a push strategy.
  • Facebook apps are a pull strategy.  You’re generating interest in users when you put out a Facebook app. You’re putting something out there, and users will interact and provide data to you because they’re interested and want to.
  • social media is kind of a blurred line when it comes to whether a push or pull strategy is most effective and even more so when it comes to what tactics are TRULY push and TRULY pull. Social media is so interactive and has so many facets to it, that I think traditional push and pull strategies will be redefined to match our generation and the channels that we’re able to market on.

Xmind is using google code, will get Yeu Ann to check out the source code. http://code.google.com/p/xmind3/

I've checked it out. Actually, it's not Google code, but simply an open-source native app stored in Google Projects, an open-source code repository. Nevertheless, it's a good mind-mapping software. Only thing is that it doesn't use Google Drive and I'm not sure if it can be integrated easily into Google Sites (due to Google Sites having issues with iframe elements).

User Expectations with Mobile Apps - 0 views

  •
mobile application design that developers should keep in mind: Users will not tolerate mobile apps that are perceived as slow to open or operate. Speed is even more important for apps than it is for websites on a computer. Users are often accessing these apps when they have only a few minutes of downtime, and so speed is paramount. Apps do not allow multi-tasking the way that browsers on a computer do, so users require instant gratification. Simplicity of functionality and organization are key to good mobile app design. Mobile apps should be linear in design-this is distinct from a typical website approach that offers multiple paths and options. Apps present you with menus, you do what you need to do, and you move out. Mobile app users do not want to be overwhelmed by too many choices and distractions when they are trying to access a feature. People want fewer choices in mobile, because if you put too many choices in mobile, users will give up.
  •
Nice read on mobile userability on the whole page. Advises and consideration into the UX experience before even jumping into development. one of the key to quality experience for our app users.

TODAYonline | Tech | Mobile Apps | Meet your app makers - 3 views

  • Appcelerator Titanium Mobile Platforms: iPhone and android What you need to get started: Software installed from the site Feature set: 4/5 | Difficulty: 5/5 | Reach: 5/5 To use Appcelerator Titanium Mobile, you need to be familiar with Web languages like Python, HTML and Javascript. That said, you will not need to know specific programming languages typically required to develop apps for the iPhone and android. All you do is build the app using Web languages, and Titanium does the rest. You will need to download the iPhone SDK (which is Mac-only) if you plan to make iPhone apps. This development platform doesn't come with any tutorials - you will have to rely on the goodwill of the community and learn how to use the tools through knowledge posted on forums. There are also paid services that provide support and automation during the app-making process. If you know how to wield the tools correctly, Titanium can offer more features than App Inventor for android. But there are limitations to being a third-party development platform - the latest features in iOS and android OS are not guaranteed to work here. Verdict: If you are open to teaching yourself app development as a hobby, the versatile Appcelerator Titanium Mobile is a great way to start. The faint of heart need not apply.
  • App Inventor lets you create apps by dragging and dropping "building blocks" embedded with code that work when you drag them onto a blank canvas. These blocks let you access virtually every function of an android handset - from timestamps and touchscreen virtual buttons to the motion sensor and GPS.

  • most freelancers with a decent body of work nowadays will also have an online presence, used, in the main, to display their work. Take as much care with your online portfolio as you would your physical one. Strive for a uniformity and dynamism in your photography of projects, and make sure that images and pdfs saved from the computer are of sufficiently high and consistent resolution. Write concise, foolproof explanations to accompany the work and organise it all in an intuitive level-based fashion, much as you would a website. Sites like Flickr and View Creatives go some way to aiding the freelancer in this professional-feeling endeavour, but you’ll still need to pour energy and vim into the whole enterprise to create the right appearance.
  • Useful Top Tips Keep things small. A portfolio any larger than A3 is really too big Keep things clean & uncrumpled Loose-leaf sheets are better than ring-bound sleeves Assembling a portfolio should not be a one-off exercise, but a dynamic and continual process Request and absorb other people’s comments and allow this information to flow back into the way you maintain your portfolio Interleave your loose-leaf sheets with a bold and dazzling substrate, though choose something that doesn’t overpower the work contained within If you choose to carry your portfolio on a laptop, for pity’s sake avoid using Powerpoint in your presentations!

Why the iPad Will Not Save the Publishing Industry - woorkup.com - 0 views

  • Leaving purely technical considerations aside (in some cases the final result is better than in others), the general quality of those magazines is without doubt extremely high and the integration between classic and multimedia content makes their reading experience very pleasant and engaging. But there is a basic limitation that could play a significant role in preventing their widespread diffusion, thereby making them not competitive in terms of economic return. The problem is not the limited number of iPads in circulation, as some may think, but the difficulty – or the inability – to download single issues of a certain magazines on your device because of their excessive size, which usually is around 400 MB.

  • each download may take a period ranging from twenty to seventy minutes if you are connected to a wi-fi hotspot. If you use a 3G connection, instead, the download is inhibited and a message warns you that, due to the excessive size of the file, you must be connected to a wi-fi to continue to the download. Apart from the frustration generated by waiting too long for the completion of the download (especially if you consider that there are an infinite number of alternative sources of information available in a few seconds, for free, just surfing the web), when the user doesn’t have access to a wi-fi network, he is likely to quit the purchase altogether

  • This limit, which negatively affects sales volumes and profitability of editorial projects aimed at iPad users, will bring developers to rethink radically the structure of such contents and limit their size. Otherwise, a significant proportion of those users who have once experienced the frustration of the download will not want to repeat the purchase a second time.
  •
Something it's not about how rich or engaging the contents are but how the ease of being able to reach for it is. ( infrastructure) Afterall would you bother buying a magazine from your local newsagent if you had to stand there and wait in a queue for 30 minutes or more.
