  • BlackBerry unveils Playbook tablet to rival iPad
  • BlackBerry will release the tablet early in the new year. The device will feature a 7-inch multitouch screen and a new operating system derived from the company’s purchase of QNX.
  • "QNX is going to enable things that you have never seen before”. Lazardis said the PlayBook would be “the first professional tablet”, and Dodge added that it would be "an incredible gaming platform for publishers and the players”.

  • The tablet will be able to run Adobe’s Flash, which Apple’s iPad doesn’t, and offer micro-HDMI and micro-usb ports. It weighs just 400g and includes dual HD cameras for video calling.
  • Although 3G and 4G models are planned for the future, the device will initially connect to the web via wifi or via a user’s BlackBerry smartphone, and offer a reflection of its screen for expanded use. Lazardis said it will offer “true multi-tasking” and "an amplified view of what's already on your BlackBerry”. It’s expected that 16gb and 32gb models will be offered.

How the Kindle Fire Could Make 7-Inch Tablets Huge | Gadget Lab | Wired.com - 0 views

  • If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard the news, Amazon debuted its $200 7-inch tablet, the Kindle Fire, this week. Make no mistake: It’s no iPad. There’s no front-facing or rear-facing camera, and it’s only got 8 GB of storage. But it’s not meant to be an iPad. It’s a completely different kind of tablet, designed for the pure consumer. That is, it’s designed for consumptive behavior: reading, listening to music, watching video content. The lack of local storage isn’t an issue, either; it’s meant to take advantage of the cloud with services like Amazon’s $80 yearly Prime service, as well as Amazon Cloud Drive. And the smaller form factor makes it extra portable, easy to whip out on the bus or the subway (much like a Kindle).

Given Tablets But No Teachers, Ethiopian Kids Teach Themselves - 1 views

  • Earlier this year, OLPC workers dropped off closed boxes containing the tablets, taped shut, with no instruction. “I thought the kids would play with the boxes. Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, found the on-off switch … powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child, per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs in the village, and within five months, they had hacked Android,” Negroponte said. “Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera, and they figured out the camera, and had hacked Android.”
  • Children there had never previously seen printed materials, road signs, or even packaging that had words on them, Negroponte said.
  • “If they can learn to read, then they can read to learn.”

DataWind's Aakash 2 and Ubislate Are Cheap Tablets for the Developing World | MIT Techn... - 0 views

  • What new opportunities do you see for apps in the developing world? Nobody focuses on the problem of creating apps for somebody whose monthly income is $200. Those people are not part of the computer age or the Internet age; most of them are not literate. So we run app competitions in India to try to get people thinking from that perspective. The winner of our last competition was a group of students who designed a commerce app for “fruit walas,” the guys who run around with carts selling fruits and vegetables. These students created a graphically intuitive way of running a small vegetable business. There are something like five million fruit walas in India, so if you had an app for them, there could be a lot of money to be made.

Are You Ready for Mobile Learning? (EDUCAUSE Quarterly) | EDUCAUSE - 1 views

  • Frequent use of mobile devices does not mean that students or instructors are ready for mobile learning and teaching
  • Wherever one looks, evidence of mobile penetration is irrefutable: cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, portable game devices, handhelds, tablets, and laptops abound. No demographic is immune from this phenomenon. From toddlers to seniors, people are increasingly connected and are digitally communicating with each other in ways that would have been impossible only a few years ago.5
  • Consequently, it comes as no surprise that sooner or later people would begin to look for ways to integrate mobile computing into e-learning to make courses more accessible and portable. For example, Duke University made headlines when it provided all incoming freshmen with their own 20-gigabyte iPods. Similarly, the Virginia Tech College of Engineering became the first public institution to require all students to purchase a tablet PC beginning with incoming freshmen in fall 2006.
