Coursera, Pedagogy, And The Two Faces Of MOOCs - 2 views

  •
The author shows how the Coursera pedagogy for xMOOC is still an instructivist approach aka a classic "sage on the stage" approach but which is one-to-very-many cMOOC is based on the connectivism-inspired approach, and focus on knowledge creation and generation whereas xMOOCs focus on knowledge duplication (Siemens, 2012) @MarkSmither puts it: "in an xMOOC you watch videos, in a cMOOC you make videos." You can probably guess which MOOC type NIE is adopting

Zugara's Augmented Reality Dressing Room Is Great If You Don't Care How Your Clothes Fit - 1 views

  • Augmented reality, or the blending of the real world with computer graphics on the fly, is one of the most exciting fields in tech right now
  • Zugara, an interactive marketing agency, has built something a bit more practical for the time being. It’s put together the Webcam Social Shopper, offering a way to help you try on clothes online from the comfort of your bedroom.

Adobe Demos Flash-to-HTML5 Conversion Tool [VIDEO] - 1 views

  • At Adobe’s MAX conference the other night, that message was made manifest with a live demonstration of a Flash to HTML5 conversion tool, which is currently in the works. The tool is incredibly impressive in that it can convert full Flash animation into HTML5 on the fly
  • Watch the demonstration video to get an idea of how users will be able to take elements from within the newly converted HTML5 code to re-insert elsewhere on a web page
  • Those animations or interactions will now be viewable on all kinds of devices — including the iPhone () and iPad. This is where we think that this HTML5 conversion tool has real possibilities. It’s one thing to be able to convert a movie or animation
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Adobe might be serious about wanting to push Flash and Adobe Air () on mobile platforms like the BlackBerry PlayBook, HP’s webOS and Google’s () Android (), but that doesn’t mean that the company isn’t listening to its customers and providing cross-platform solutions that can work on the many different device types

Protect your smartphone - 0 views

  • If you have ever entertained that seemingly laughable thought of installing anti-virus software on your mobile phone, you are not alone.
  • A few months ago, Kaspersky Labs discovered two Trojan-SMS malware that masqueraded as media player apps for Android devices. Once installed, the malware can send premium SMSes costing US$6 ($7.70) each without the user's knowledge.
  • the money is still on computers, and cyber criminals follow the trail of money. The increasing number of people using smartphones is a factor, but not a big one yet. There are some banking services on mobile platforms, but the majority of consumers still use computers to access banking services
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • According to Kaspersky, closed platforms (iPhone, BlackBerry and the old Symbian) are more secure while open platforms (Android, Windows Mobile 6 Series and the new Symbian) are less so. This, Kaspersky explains, is because the level of security is inversely proportionate to the ease with which developers can build apps on it.
  • "The more secure a system is, the harder it is for development - both for the good guys and the bad guys," he said.
  • security and ease of app development are two sides of the same coin that have to be finely balanced in order for a mobile platform to succeed.
  • iPhone users face exactly the same problems, but unfortunately, Apple has a very strict regulation on the apps industry, and the SDK it gives to software companies doesn't let us develop what we need. (Thanks to Apple's efforts policing the platform) iPhone users face maybe fewer virus problems, but the threat with confidential data is still there - and it only takes one threat. Android may face more viruses, but at the same time, there will also be more solutions from us and our competitors
  •
Open source and Closed source mobile platform faces security issue. An open source platform may be more prone to malwares and viruses. Some factors we should consider in our context here in education to protecting confidential contents and issues while considering developing apps. for example we could risk all of our contacts information being stolen and end up being sold to some advertising spamming companies who spam you daily or watches your daily activities.
  •
I used to think open source platform was very good for development but now you can have different view if you think like a hacker. It will take at least a year or more before mobile security catch up.

Deconstructing the HTML5 Mobile Development Workflow - 1 views

  •
Hey it's a very informative video presentation on migrating your skills to the mobile world but you're not quite sure how to get started. If you are still thinking a mobile web app is just a tear down simplified version of the actual website, you should watch this. Well I was thinking it was supposed to be that way a couple months back. * Be warned contents can get technical and is long but it's better than reading lines of texts.

Sifteo Cubes Are Building Blocks for Geeks | Gadget Lab | Wired.com - 0 views

  • LEGOs and Lincoln Logs are for Luddites. Sifteo cubes are the new building blocks. Each cube has a 128-pixel color LCD screen, wireless connectivity, a 32-bit ARM microprocessor, and an accelerometer that responds to tilting and stacking. You can arrange them to create everything from vocabulary puzzles to building challenges, all of which can be enjoyed by as many people as you can crowd around the coffee table.
  • Sifteo founders Jeevan Kalanithi and David Merrill previewed the cubes at TED 2009 when they were grad students at MIT. The cubes debuted at CES this year. The design marries classic tactility with new hardware and software. “Sifteo cubes are the first gaming solution to deliver truly hands-on play,” Merrill said. “[The cubes combine] the latest in embedded computing and sensing technology with a timeless play style.”

Fascinating! Enhancing mobile learning with tactile and spatial play. I was thinking how we could adapt iPhones or iPads to fit together like what we do for children's building blocks or mahjong tiles... Do watch the video too!

Video Chat Becomes Social Networking's New Battleground - 0 views

  •
"On Wednesday, Facebook announced that it had partnered with Skype to let Facebook users call one another from their camera-enabled computers, simply by clicking on a button on a friend's Facebook profile or from the chat window. After a one-time download of Skype's technology, the video calls look to be painless and simple for anyone to use. Compare that to Hangout, Google's new video chat in its still invite-only social network Google+. Hangout is designed as a group chat application for impromptu socializing with friends. To start one, you press a button declaring you are open to hanging out, choose which circle(s) of friends to send the invite to, and up to 10 people can be in the room at any one time. The loudest talker gets the big space up top - and the group can collectively talk or even watch YouTube videos together. As young Marty McFly once said in a different context, your kids are going to love it."

Simple Techniques for Applying Active Learning Strategies to Online Course Videos | Fac... - 2 views

    • Rachel Tan

Dr Ashley, I agree with you and posting a question at the beginning of the video is an excellent strategy. That is how I learn. I need to know the question upfront so that I know what to pay attention to in the video.
  • Embed short graded or self-assessments either in the video itself, or at the end of each video. Including one or two multiple-choice questions or requests to post to a forum—either between scenes (using a post-production editing tool such as Camtasia or Captivate) or after the video—alerts students to the “take homes” they should be getting from the material. It also helps teachers assess, at point of contact, whether students understand the major concepts.
    • Rachel Tan

This (self assessment) is absolutely necessary to give learning a chance to happen, as we develop open learning courses. This applies to Google Sites training resources out there.
