  • Client: “I don’t really like that the website has a top and bottom.”Me: “Everything has a top and bottom. That’s how it goes.”Client: “Not true. Circles don’t.” Me: “So you want a circular website?”Client: “Yup! Like a conveyer belt, or ooh! a rolodex. Every time you scroll up past the top, you  get to the bottom. Every time you scroll down past the bottom, you get to the top.”Me: “Then how will we designate the—” Client: “What’s the top and bottom? Good point. If everything is continuous, then there can’t be a top or bottom.”Me: “I can’t believe I’m having this conversation.”Client: “So, what we need is a randomizer!”

For humor purposes. You guys may not realized this but some of you may sound like this…only designers understand it. Non designers who think they are designers….move a side! Let the big boys lead the way yo!

W3C: Hold off on HTML5 in websites - 0 views

  • HTML5, which updates the HTML specification to accommodate modern Web applications, has gained a lot of adherents in vendors like Microsoft, Google, and Apple. But the specification is plain not ready yet for deployment to websites, an official with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees HTML5, stressed this week
  • The problem we're facing right now is there is already a lot of excitement for HTML5, but it's a little too early to deploy it because we're running into interoperability issues," including differences between video on devices
  • HTML5 is viewed as a "game changer." Companies now can deploy HTML5 in their applications or in intranets where a rendering engine can be controlled, said Le Hegaret. But it is a different story on the "open Web," where interoperability is an issue
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • HTML5 specification itself features support for video and Canvas 2D. But other technologies such as CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and MathML are considered part of the "open Web platform" along with HTML5
  • Apple has positioned HTML5 as a replacement for Adobe's Flash rich Internet technology. But Flash and similar technologies, such as Microsoft Silverlight, still have a place
  • We're not going to retire Flash anytime soon," Le Hegaret said. It will take years before all Web clients support HTML5, he said. He cited Microsoft's IE6 browser as an example of popular client not supporting the standard. "IE6 is still being used on the Web today, and it is 10 years old."

Hi Dr. Ashley, sorry, it looks like it's restricted access. Do we have to pay for it, or is there some educational service that we can use to access the article?
  •
You will need to go to the NIE library for this. They may have already subscribed to it or they can find it for you.
  •
Dear all, I've downloaded the article already. If anyone of you is interested (unfortunately, it's not available in the NIE library but the NTU library internal network only), please feel free to approach me for a copy.

A Guide To Seamless Website Redesign - Noupe - 0 views

  • Take a look at your web site and search for unnecessary details that could bore the client. Very often we see the description of some products that may seem appealing at first sight but in the end they lack important information that may persuade us to buy it. Redesigning your web site is something that you should do quite often in order to make it effective for a long period of time. Updating, always bringing something new to audience, using the latest technology instead of hard-coding, brings you the company you’ve always dreamt of. As Leonardo da Vinci said best “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”.

Mobile Learning is Beyond its Tipping Point by Gerry Griffin : Learning Solutions Magazine - 1 views

  • To be effective at improving productivity and content retention, mobile learning content must take a different form from what has gone before. And it is content — content fit for the mobile learning purpose — that will drive market growth.
  • there are two types of user for mobile learning — the “considered” user and the “trigger” user.
  • The considered user downloads and views learning material
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • The trigger user responds to contextual situations that require action
  • know what
  • know-how
  • Mobile learning is also best focused around “inflection points.” These are times during the week where there is no opportunity to redo the task, and where high performance is vital. Examples of inflection points include issuing a verbal warning to an employee, conducting a meaty interview, and doing a key client review.
  • the idea of learning separated by an extended period of time from the “Event,” when a person actually attempts to use the learning has to be challenged. Few learners today want the information weeks and even months in advance. They actually would like to have specific top-of-mind and refresher learning “on-demand” minutes or even seconds before they will need to use it.
