Mobile Learning is Beyond its Tipping Point by Gerry Griffin : Learning Solutions Magazine - 1 views

  • To be effective at improving productivity and content retention, mobile learning content must take a different form from what has gone before. And it is content — content fit for the mobile learning purpose — that will drive market growth.
  • there are two types of user for mobile learning — the “considered” user and the “trigger” user.
  • The considered user downloads and views learning material
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • The trigger user responds to contextual situations that require action
  • know what
  • know-how
  • Mobile learning is also best focused around “inflection points.” These are times during the week where there is no opportunity to redo the task, and where high performance is vital. Examples of inflection points include issuing a verbal warning to an employee, conducting a meaty interview, and doing a key client review.
  • the idea of learning separated by an extended period of time from the “Event,” when a person actually attempts to use the learning has to be challenged. Few learners today want the information weeks and even months in advance. They actually would like to have specific top-of-mind and refresher learning “on-demand” minutes or even seconds before they will need to use it.

Why Location-Based Gaming Is The Next Killer App [OPINION] - 0 views

  • Capture the flag. Hide and seek. Marco Polo. These location-based games brought hours of fun to many of us as children. Then video games came along and suddenly the only location you played in was the living room. Now this shift is coming full circle as innovative mobile games are using geo-location, image recognition and augmented reality technologies to combine the real and virtual worlds.

I just happened to think: Imagine if this pattern-recognition tech concept could be adapted to mobile phones in the near future, it might make for a very powerful blended learning / augmented reality tool. :) According to the researcher, implementation for mobile devices is feasible. Possible applications for m-learning could be: gestural recognition, dynamic object association and the like. E.g. If we could use an iPhone/Kinect to track a student's movements and remotely control an external apparatus halfway across the globe (maybe explore an Amazonian jungle to study biodiversity first-hand), or help disabled students (maybe cerebral palsy sufferers) communicate their thoughts more clearly... or perhaps get the students to "air-sketch" Chinese/Tamil characters to produce music on the go... Collaborative Learning for the Digital Age - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Hi... - 2 views

  • The real treasure trove was to be found in the students' innovations. Working together, and often alongside their professors, they came up with far more learning apps for their iPods than anyone—even at Apple—had dreamed possible. Most predictable were uses whereby students downloaded audio archives relevant to their courses—Nobel Prize acceptance speeches by physicists and poets, the McCarthy hearings, famous trials. Almost instantly, students figured out that they could record lectures on their iPods and listen at their leisure.

Quick and Simple mLearning Content for the iPhone by Paul Clothier : Learning Solutions... - 1 views

  • Everyone seems to be voicing their opinion about mLearning — about the impact it will have on work, productivity, education ... and how it could, in fact, solve world hunger. The truth is that very few people or organizations have actually developed any mLearning, and their opinions are often more philosophical than pragmatic. My intention in this article is to focus on the pragmatic — to help you get your hands dirty so you can speak about mLearning from the perspective of having actually developed some.

Pragmatic tips for developing mLearning projects...

While what the author suggested is a simple start, it is a bad one for the long run. Why? It replicates exactly what you can already do more logically and perhaps more easily in other platforms. It's best to have the change in pedagogy or strategy in mind when designing apps or creating an m-learning system. Our mission is to leverage on learning outside the classroom, on the move or in more meaningful contexts.
