TODAYonline | Tech | Mobile Apps | Meet your app makers - 3 views

  • Appcelerator Titanium Mobile Platforms: iPhone and Android What you need to get started: Software installed from the site Feature set: 4/5 | Difficulty: 5/5 | Reach: 5/5 To use Appcelerator Titanium Mobile, you need to be familiar with Web languages like Python, HTML and Javascript. That said, you will not need to know specific programming languages typically required to develop apps for the iPhone and Android. All you do is build the app using Web languages, and Titanium does the rest. You will need to download the iPhone SDK (which is Mac-only) if you plan to make iPhone apps. This development platform doesn't come with any tutorials - you will have to rely on the goodwill of the community and learn how to use the tools through knowledge posted on forums. There are also paid services that provide support and automation during the app-making process. If you know how to wield the tools correctly, Titanium can offer more features than App Inventor for Android. But there are limitations to being a third-party development platform - the latest features in iOS and Android OS are not guaranteed to work here. Verdict: If you are open to teaching yourself app development as a hobby, the versatile Appcelerator Titanium Mobile is a great way to start. The faint of heart need not apply.
  • App Inventor lets you create apps by dragging and dropping "building blocks" embedded with code that work when you drag them onto a blank canvas. These blocks let you access virtually every function of an Android handset - from timestamps and touchscreen virtual buttons to the motion sensor and GPS.

      Why can't Facebook be used for evaluation ?
  •
    I think it can. The author seemed to be taking a very narrow, perhaps traditional, view of evaluation.
  •
    Yea I agree, and I think when the author talks about 'use a traditional e-portfolio program', he must be thinking about BB or D2L..

Exporting Images from Canvas Tag HTML5 - 1 views

  • Exporting & Saving One thing that SVG can’t do is save the resulting image as a bitmap. It’s easy for <canvas> because the element is already a bitmap in the first place! The canvas can export its image to a data URL (e.g., data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGg...). This data may then be rendered in the browser, which could then be saved or dragged to the desktop, used in a new canvas, and so on. The browser must support PNG images, and it may have varying support for GIF and JPG. For our example, we’ll stick with PNG since it supports alpha transparency, and where we haven’t drawn on the canvas, it’ll be transparent. To get the data URL, we simply call canvas.toDataURL('image/png'). Note that we’re calling toDataURL() on the <canvas> element, not on the 2D context. This is because we’re getting all the pixels in the canvas, not just the pixels in a particular context. So taking the example we’ve put together already, we’ll make the browser redirect to a PNG version of the image when a user clicks on the <canvas> element (a contrived example, I know!): canvas.onclick = function () {  window.location = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');};

    I am sharing of export images from web app specially to Eve and Sham, maybe useful for our harmonia project. This is the workflow i was mentioning on exporting the contents of the new html5 tag canvas to an jpeg or png and it opens in a browser, which then can be save or be used for other things, we could also explore on other options of sending the image directly to other applications. http://jsbin.com/abagi3/5/ Above url is a live prototype and you can actually view source to see how easily it is being done. :)

Tips for Using Chat as an Instructional Tool -- Campus Technology - 1 views

  •
    This article was written 5 years ago. Now, we have the benefit of ubiqutious mobile chat platforms e.g. Whatsapp, which can create small focus groups to talk about a particular topic. Not only so, besides the usual text, Whatsapp also allows participants to share mobile videos taken on the spot, share their geolocations with one another, share audio recordings and of course, images. A personal example of how I use Whatsapp for personal learning: I use Whatsapp regularly to practice reading and writing my Japanese with a few other friends, and when I make mistakes, they can quickly give me feedback in real-time. We also exchange photos of Japanese culture, food items and even on-the-spot videos from those who are in Japan. Some of us go for Japanese classes, some don't. But those who go for the classes share what they have learnt with those who haven't.  I'm not sure if this can be classified as a type of "flipped learning", but I realized that mobile chat makes an excellent real-time, yet highly personalized tool for e-learning in small group discussions. Perhaps this is one area we can consider next time as a way to do mobile learning that harnesses the social nature of us learners.

Design Thinking for Educators - 2 views

    This website is good. They describe their beliefs on selling their thinking process to creating an experience for learners. Their process is 1)Discovery, 2)Interpretation,3)Ideation,4)Experimentation 5)Evolution... illustrated in their case studies before they chunk out their product. Perhaps our department have the same manner of process before we come out our products. Perhaps this could be a less vague idea for our audience in term of showing what we do less descriptive but more case studies.
