      I've done this at conferences - a great way to get notes from one session while you're in another.  And a way to plan where to meet up for dinner! Teachers in lecture classes use Twitter as a "back channel" for students to use to ask questions and discuss while the lecture is in progress. Oh, I see this is mentioned in the "Community" section below...

    I think this Blog is rich with possibility for utilizing social media for the teaching of a second language. Students so much into social media and they also get motivated by change in ideas and activities. The variety of possibilities that this blog offers provides a teacher with a good resource that would work for various language levels.

    "Over the past academic year, my students and I have been experimenting with the use of a number of web based applications (often known as Web 2.0 tools). My aim has been to enhance our schemes of work by providing our students with new and exciting learning opportunities. In my opinion, using technology effectively has clear benefits for both teaching and learning and can help to improve motivation by engaging pupils in activities which, perhaps, step out of their ordinary school experience and which show them that it is possible to teach and learn about a subject using tools similar to those they use daily outside school. In other words, we have tried to use the types of tools with which they are often already familiar. I have written about each of these individual tools in separate posts, but I thought it would be useful to list the ten most used internet applications on one post. As ever, I aim to provide, not only a list of the web applications we have used, but also examples of practice which you may wish to follow or, indeed, improve upon. Therefore, each of the entries below has links leading to lesson plans which have incorporated the tools as well as working examples of students' work where appropriate.     I don't know much about this, but Pablo was looking for somewhere you could post a video and then have students do audio replies to the video. This does that in a sort of blog-like format. YouTube can do video replies.

    We can continue a discussion here in the Diigo group about articles, tools, or whatever the group finds and bookmarks. You can also put "sticky notes" right on the article page itself - no one but the logged-in group members can actually see the notes. This is one way we can keep the "group momentum" going after the institute ends. Add your thoughts!

      Still not sure about the relationship of all of these social networking tools to FERPA. Can you require students to post work on a site not run by the school ... and if so, what happens if there is a security compromise? These are all tools that I would use personally, but am uncomfortable advocating their use to a wider audience without explicit permission ... which is an incredibly time consuming process.

    "they" would say no without even reading/listening to my reasons. Better to ask forgiveness than permission but it may not be worth your job and it's definitely not worth the safety of students.

    I read this post, and then looked at what he has to say about PLNs. I must confess that I can't imagine when I will have time to regularly check Twitter (much less tweet) once school starts. And his points about PLNs match mine, too. I guess I am considering new things in this class primarily as vehicles to promote student learning and engage students.

    Jan - I had doubts as whether to add Dudeney's post here - but I decided to do so -to see other people's views-and especially those who have been using twitter for some time now (I am a new user myself). I have the same concerns as you and I happen to respect Gavin's work a lot (I am a little bit biased) as I have had the opportunity to meet him online in courses, read his books etc.

    thanks for sharing Roxana. I really like how this blog discusses the language and cultural uses of using voicethread to create learning communities. It provided me many practical examples I can use in my classroom to help students focus on langauge development while using the technology. This post puts the focus on learning not on the technology. The handouts are great supports that help students stay on the learning track and because of this, the coummunity of learning is built. I was a little concerned by the deficit language used on the scoring rubric for asynchronous content. I will probably use something similar by change the wording to be a little more constructive, as meaning can be lost online and harsh wording can be misinterpreted.

      Has anyone used Thinkquest? It looks like a great way to introduce elementary students to social networking in a safe way. I also posted a great site that does online safety and cyberbulling in 15 minutes lessons with Garfield cartoons for kids.

      Yes, I have used it primarily with middle school students and I have found it quite useful. The last time I used it was several years ago to set up a list of websites to use with a webquest, a very simple and easy thing to do.

    I don't think that the facebook craze has effected us THAT much, goodness!!! I am 22 and am part of this generation, and I can say that most of my friends and I have grown out of the facebook phase, we aren't obsessed like we were at the end of high school and start of college.

    An amusing article ... and perhaps with some degree of truth to it ... but I am unsure why the opinion professor of pharmacology who has done no research on the topic warrants an article.
