This PDF is a great resource to have when planning a Skype call with another class or person!  I downloaded this and plan on using it in my own teaching.
  • Every learner in her classroom fulfilled an important function and numerous curricular outcomes were met whenever her classroom connected via Skype. Please click on this link to view this PDF file on turning a Skype call into a learning call--it's a great resource!

▶ Language Practice Hangouts - YouTube - 1 views

  •
These are established Language Practice Hangouts for language. But, I thought this would be a great idea for an extension of speaking in class. It could be voluntary or mandatory. Would be neat, too, if kids who have moved on to upper levels moderated the Hangout from time to time.

I see a place for this in my classroom.
  •
The article describes how to engage students in classroom activities using Padlet App. This multimedia friendly tool encourages real time full class participation. It also can be used for out of classroom activities. Sorry, I was unable to annotate this document so am posting another article on padlet app, which I had annotated

VoiceThread - About - Digital Library - 2 views

  • Interactive tutorials made with VoiceThread ask students to practice what they learn outside of class, so the instructor can observe their practice, respond with feedback, or modify classroom teaching to address students' needs.
    • atsukofrederick

This is a good example activity that I can adapt to use VT in a flipped classroom. I have started to see lots of potential in this tool.
  • Using a bilingual dictionary correctly is an important skill for nearly all language students, and this tutorial aims to help students understand how to use a dictionary well.

I really liked this article. Good websites to explore. I can't wait to try them all.
  •
I was amazed at all of the awesome websites posted on this blog, it was a great resource for finding new technologies to use in class. Also loved the music/ music video post!
  •
Many great ideas. In the past few days I have come across a few of the online tools mentioned but this blog brings them all together in one source, which is very helpful.
  •
A little overwhelming in terms of the number of resources, but really great resources nonetheless!
  •
A lot of great ideas and resources all gathered in this one resource. I look forward to having an afternoon to read through this more carefully.

Why Diigo Rocks for Educators! | TeachHUB - 7 views

  • Once the group is created, you can create student accounts. No email addresses needed. You create the username and password.
  • There are groups for all these where members can share their saves to not only their inventory but to the group as well. Diigo will email you once a week with all the new content. Pretty neat, huh?
  • There are loads of other features as well, like highlighting on a webpage, adding sticky notes to pages, saving pages to read later without actually adding them to your collection and so much more.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • When you save to Diigo your saves go anywhere because they are saved to the cloud. Sounds mystical doesn't it?
    • mauritzenj

I am so mad I never used this earlier! It is really fantastic.
  • One of the most powerful features is the tagging. Basically, if I save Google.com and don't tag it, I will have to remember the name of the site or something in the address
  • your saves don't travel with you from computer to computer and device to device.
  • So if students are working on a group project they can share their saves together, automatically. Or as a class, if you are working on something everyone can contribute information they find.
    • cwelton

I love this concept--in level 3 I sometimes have the students do peer-editing of papers or projects, and I think Diigo could pair well with a pre-editing phase where they could collaborate on research as well as composition!
    • tkozhanova

I agree. i like this idea too!
  • hen visit the Educator Area and apply for the Educator upgrade.
  •
I love that you can use this with students! I had no clue. Thanks for sharing.
  •
As I am still trying to understand the full benefits of using Diigo, I found this article of tremendous help. Thank you for sharing!
  •
This seems really useful. I'm excited about Diigo for my own use, hadn't thought about using it with students yet.

Ooh, the internet tells me it's Free Voluntary Reading. This is an interesting article. I'm not sure it would be directly applicable to any of the classes I teach right now, but it's good food for thought.

Vocaroo - 0 views

  • Record an audio welcome message and put it on your blog (or wiki or web page.) Elementary students can practice their oral reading skills. You could even post them on your blog for parents and grandparents to hear. Each day have one student record “what we did in school today” and post it on your blog. Students in a foreign language class could record words or phrases and then email them to their teacher. Left your students with a substitute? Record a message to encourage your students to be on their best behavior!

I used Vocaroo this week-- a simple app and easy to use that can fulfill a variety of needs for the classroom. I thought I could share some here with you...I am drawn to the second point about practicing and recording reading out loud. This past year with my elementary students, I found a great need to improve their understanding of sounds in Spanish, as well as building their confidence as "speakers" of the language. This gives me an opportunity to work on this issue further this upcoming year.

How to Use Google Slides in the Classroom - The Tech Edvocate - 1 views

  • Third, teachers can encourage collaborative learning in a number of ways with Google Slides. An assignment could be designed so that each student creates their own slides; once combined into one presentation, students can learn from each other. Or, small groups can collaborate on one slide presentation in real-time and then present their slides to the class, allowing for an engaging student presentation.

I took this idea for my lesson. I would like to add a piece with Pear Deck or Poll Everywhere to augment it. I have seen both apps used, but have never used them myself.
  •
This is a great idea for using with Poll Everywhere. Thanks for sharing!
  •
Thanks! I used GS so much this past year, and yet did not use it deliberately to encourage collaboration and community-building. This gives me great ideas.

7 Creative Student Design Projects to Try with Canva - 8 views

  • Let’s face it: we’re humans equipped with mystifyingly powerful, sensory-driven brains. Why not inspire your class to explore how boundless its capacity to create really is?
    • effeinstein

I like canva as a way for students to visually show what they have learned and they can add text to show their target language skills as well!

I have a colleague who brings Canva up all the time! He loves it!
  •
I found that Canva is a great tool to create a infographic. It sometimes took hours to find the infographic I wanted online, but now I can create the one in a way I want. I just tried to make one in Japanese:) . I would like to see other ways to use this tool.
  •
I really enjoyed using Canva in my project this week. It's really nice and easy to use (and I like the app for my phone). I can imagine using the poster project and the student profile project in my classroom.

(28) 5 Strategies for Using Flipgrid in the Language Learning Classroom | LinkedIn - 6 views

  •
Since others posted tutorials, I chose an article from a teacher who shares its value.
  •
I really like this instructor's take on communication in the classroom, and how to use FlipGrid to foster it.
  •
I loved the story of Connie who was nervous to speak in class but felt comfortable and excelled in flipgrid! Her picture was Sully from Monsters inc which gave me the idea of having students use dolls or stuffed animals to present stories on flip grid in the voice of that character.

Creative Language Class | Ideas, solutions, and inspiration for world language teachers - 2 views

  •
Helpful source for creative ideas to enliven the classroom.
  •
The blog consists of three parts: Blog, Teaching Toolbox, and Workshops. We can read about issues, tips, comments that are pertinent to language instruction. Teachertoolbox provides new resources and activity ideas. We can find where and what kind of PDs are available in Workshops. The world language consultants, Kara Parker and Megan Smith are the authors of this bog. They understand the challenges language teachers are facing and believe it is very important to provide and share resources and support each other to stay being an effective language teacher.

How to use Glogster - web / desktop - 6 views

  • All too often though, presentations feel rather one-dimensional and audiences begin to drift.
  • Not only will audiences be enraptured, but presenters will gain skills in digital literacy and creativity, as well as a lot of confidence! Glogster presentations can also be shared instantly with classmates, parents, colleagues and learners around the globe.
    • kschroed12

This is mentioned in our articles that we read for this week. As stated in our articles, presenters should react to the audience. According to this information, using Glogster presentations will do just that; they will keep the audience engaged.

I really like Glogster. I thought it was a great way to introduce oneself to an ePal at the high school level. Really fun and engaging!
  •
This could be really useful for study abroad reflection too!
  •
I tried this one at the beginning of the week, but gave up after not being able to type accent marks in Spanish. I like the idea of creating posters or "one pager" presentations.

Types of Texts : Foreign Language Teaching Methods - 6 views

  • A "text" isn't limited to something written down. A text can be a film, an artifact, anything in a language and culture that conveys meaning.
  • Created texts have long dominated the materials used in language classrooms. But increasingly, educators are coming to understand the need to bring more authentic texts into the learning environment.
  •
Good discussion of "authenticity" -- what makes a text authentic or not?
  •
"Authentic" appears to mean: naturally produced by authentic source for communication in a native setting. What concerns me is that the call for "authentic" dates back to perhaps 20 years ago? We are still claiming it is important, yet we scaffold authentic text often to the point that they loose their intrinsic challenge.

Fakebook - 5 views

  • "Fakebook" allows teachers and students to create imaginary profile pages for study purposes.
  • Use "Fakebook" to chart the plot of a book, the development of a character, a series of historical events, the debates and relationships between people, and so on!
  •
Another FB idea, but this is not connected to the real facebook. I'm not sure classmates can interact with these "fake" profiles. Still, might be fun.
  •
I can imagine using this after reading a book with a class - I could assign a character to each student and give them a situation to respond to. It might turn out something like this: https://thehairpin.com/texts-from-pride-and-prejudice-9508de842826

Education World: Five Ways to Use Padlet in Class - 3 views

  • Padlet is a free, online "virtual wall" tool where users can express thoughts on topics of their choice. It's like a piece of paper, but on the Web.
    • vivianfranco

I like Padlet because it seems it is a simple tool to get our students participate inside/outside the classroom. Sometimes students feel frustrated when they struggle with technology and then they have to figure out how to develop the task. So presenting the students easy ways to learn through technology can lower this cognitive overload.

Statement on the Role of Technology in Language Learning | American Council on the Teac... - 3 views

I hope we can learn how to introduce games online. For me this hard to do , but I think it be very effective for students to learn FL.
  •
I like to use games in teaching but for me it is hard to design one in class and online.
  •
"The use of technology is not a goal in and of itself; rather technology is one tool that supports language learners as they use the target language in culturally appropriate ways to accomplish authentic tasks." This quote stood out to me and it is so true. sometimes we feel pressured to use technology but we forgot the pedagogy purpose.
  •
Thanks for sharing it. We are using technology for our language lessons. I agree what ACFLT says about having clear that tech is a tool not a goal since the most important aspect is the learning.
