Constantinos, this a great resource of information. Thank you for sharing! I haven't sit down to read it all, but skimming through it I found plenty of interesting information. I was always interested in using video games or educational games for language learning, but never took initiative in reading anything on the topic. In the beginning of "From "Authentic Materials" to "Live Materials" section, the author mentions that the culture should not be described to students, but rather facilitate a platform for them to actually participate in that culture. I see how we can do that through games, but is there any of you using other means to do it? Is it possible to do it through social networks or second language learning networks? If yes, how exactly? Any thoughts on this?

It seems at times that "wired differently" is being used as an excuse for a growing inability to stay on task. When the need for immediate gratification leads you to think that 6 minutes of YouTube is a substitute for reading Vonnegut, I get a little worried. The social world of the teenagers may center around multitasking, but that seems to suggest that we need to have them work on focused concentration in the classroom ... rather than reinforcing skills that they are mastering on their own.

Jon- I totally agree that we should still make them read Vonnegut and can't use new culture/brain learning styles as excuses- how to reconcile the new ways students are and our teaching styles is where we need to research more so we can implement instructional practices that meet them where they are at and get them to the place we need them to be.

I read this post, and then looked at what he has to say about PLNs. I must confess that I can't imagine when I will have time to regularly check Twitter (much less tweet) once school starts. And his points about PLNs match mine, too. I guess I am considering new things in this class primarily as vehicles to promote student learning and engage students.

Jan - I had doubts as whether to add Dudeney's post here - but I decided to do so -to see other people's views-and especially those who have been using twitter for some time now (I am a new user myself). I have the same concerns as you and I happen to respect Gavin's work a lot (I am a little bit biased) as I have had the opportunity to meet him online in courses, read his books etc.

I used Vocaroo this week-- a simple app and easy to use that can fulfill a variety of needs for the classroom. I thought I could share some here with you...I am drawn to the second point about practicing and recording reading out loud. This past year with my elementary students, I found a great need to improve their understanding of sounds in Spanish, as well as building their confidence as "speakers" of the language. This gives me an opportunity to work on this issue further this upcoming year.

Besides, it provides evidence of the effect of media sources on language acquisition which is also linked to authentic material. I have used both Veinte Mundos and Paperboy--Wondering if I can use EdPuzzle/ Playposit, or Diigo with these-- I think that will help with greater student engagement and my ability to track what they are 'doing' with these resources-- It is not enough to assign them to watch/ read, I need to provide the activity to accompany it.

Focusing on authenticity makes students more inclined to participate. In addition, activities should be engaging, varied, focused on the unit theme and force students to use the target language. When I was video recording with Flipgrid interactively at the beginning of the training course, I already thought I found a very useful tool for my students of elementary Chinese in a hybrid class for the upcoming semester. Having watched this step-by-step YouTube introduction to it, I'm confident they are going to like this platform and be definitely benefited with all its video, audio, and drawing features in the remote interactive learning. Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been discussing creating new FlipGrid assignments with my colleagues, but have never personally used it before. It seems like the least intimidating student video platform that I've seen so far. I love the snapchat-esque filters, stickers, etc... that users can play with.

I am also thinking of trying it in the fall after I heard a lot of good things about it. I prefer it to VoiceThread (I really did not like the chaotic presentation of the different submissions). And it can be integrated into Canvas, but I still have to figure out the details of that (would I leave comments in FlipGrid or Canvas?).

His videos are so helpful! Thanks for sharing. Does anyone know if Flipgrid integrates with Sakai? A big concern for me is to keep things simple and streamlined for students. Sending them information through different channels seems to just ask for things to get overlooked or lost. Thanks!
