Inside VIPKID, Cindy Mi, and $3 billion startup's teacher community - Business Insider - 0 views

  • But, she said, she and fellow members of the Teachers of Color group have called for VIPKid to act "proactively" by teaching the company's parent customers about diversity in America, involving teachers of color in the construction of the curriculum, featuring teachers of color in advertisements in China, and releasing a statement to the company's Chinese customers explicitly supporting teachers of color.

Online tutoring like the kind offered by this company, VIPKid, from China to the US, can offer great opportunities for targeting interpersonal communication. However, perhaps due to the synchronous nature of the interactions between tutors and students, cultural and racial stereotypes can interfere in many damaging ways. Does interpersonal communication in the language classroom, real or virtual, open up students and their interlocutors to situations for which we as teachers may not always be prepared?

There are notes that should be investigated here, too - government quality indicator proposal (#3), students disappearing (#5). I think you will find the article very interesting - even if the study was done on a required course for students in "College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management"

Good ideas - I could see Tip #2 as a great starter project in language for level 2 and above.  Alyssa and I do the weekly video updates, pretty much just like three points listed here - and we've also gotten good feedback on those.

Connecting a Classroom: Reflections on Using Social Media With My Students - Education ... - 2 views

  • eflections on Using Social Media
  • Social media can expand our thoughts and ideas and connect us to what is going on in the rest of the world. It would be cool getting ideas that are actually present outside our community.”
  • sk students to help develop ways to use that platform to connect within and beyond your classroom. Co-create virtual community with students rather than for them. This obviously looks different for elementary classrooms than for secondary, but all students should feel a sense of ownership over the classroom accounts.

" ask students to help develop ways to use that platform to connect within and beyond your classroom. Co-create virtual community with students rather than for them. This obviously looks different for elementary classrooms than for secondary, but all students should feel a sense of ownership over the classroom accounts". i think that this is the key - not building for them but with them

That's a great statement to highlight. This applies to higher ed as well. (Kim, Group 3)

I like this idea, but wonder how it would look in a classroom where some students have extremely limited tech knowledge. Maybe pairing them up with other students and having them teach each other?

Digital storytelling is so awesome! I got a chance to create a digital story through the Minnesota Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute and it was an awesome experience. I'd highly recommend looking into your local branch of the National Writing Project to see what resources or professional development are available.

Definitely one of my passions as a teacher- helping students get to the point where they can tell their own stories.

Mix It Up! Authentic Activities for the World Language Classroom | Edutopia - 15 views

  • But true authenticity comes from the activities we use during class time, leaving an impact on the communicative skills of our students.
  • Use the language proficiency site developed by UTexas to gain access to native Spanish speakers talking about a variety of themes. These are conveniently divided into proficiency levels.
    • Shereen Elgamal

I tried this activity by having each group research then report about an Arabic speaking country of their choice and the activity was a great success. They seemed to have had a lot of fun, presented short clear sentences (for the most part) that also provided factual and relevant material, and it opened the door for some spontaneous cultural themes and relevant dicussions.

  • If we make activities genuine, our students will be much more inclined to participate, acquiring new knowledge through the process.

I've used some of the videos from UTexas. Some of the novice level videos are still too difficult for my middle schoolers though! I have to give lot's of scaffolding and support.

      These are great resources!
  • remember these rules when selecting activities: They must be authentic. They should always be engaging. Activities should be varied. They need to be focused around the unit theme. Perhaps most importantly, they should force students to use the target language.
  •
Authentic activities for the 3 modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, presentational. Great technology tools mentioned.
  •
Amazing resource! I love how this article offers ways to integrate technology through accessing each mode in several ways!

What I find useful from using illustrations on this page is that they are in clipboard design and are free of words in English or any other language. Each illustration allows for a variety of activities raging from reviewing vocabulary, grammar, being creative using different skills: writing, speaking; individual or small group work.
