    Sensational Sounds Projects: Sound Sandwich - 6th Grade All sound starts with vibration, and that vibration can come from just about anything. In this activity, your breath will cause two rubber bands to vibrate. Then, you will see if you can change the pitch, or how high or low we hear a sound.  Supplies:  Download the PDF

    There are multiple activities on this site that would be beneficial. I don't see a 6.3.22 standard in the 2010 standards. Is this a typo? There are several third grade standards that deal with sound.

      This is a creative activity that addresses science and language arts curricula.  Computers/internet access is required.

    This activity addresses the third grade Physical Science standards 3.1.1, 3.1.2, and 3.1.3.  It meets the core standard of Observe and describe how sound is produced by vibrations. I like this activity because it allows students to choose where their journey will take them.  Internet access is a requirement.  I do not think this activity would be as dynamic if it were adapted to be just a listening activity.   ELL's could use the internet to "travel" and investigate sound in their native language.  High ability learners could create an atlas to go with their journals.

      When doing an assessment vary questions asked to help them remain successful. Most students should have no problems assembling the sandwich. If the noise does not agree with a student, consider making another instrument, like a drum to keep them involved.

    Awesome activity to shows students about sound. This site has video tutorials and 3 links that provide a concept map, instructions to perform activity in class or in after school activities, and websites that allow students or educator go deeper in their understanding of sound. You can essentially make your own assessment for the activity.

      3.1.2 "Investigate how the loudness and pitch of sound changes when the rate of vibrations changes." This activity can be used with ELL students by having them do the activity while saying a variety of words that they need to practice learning. These words could be said in Spanish and English, both. This is a great way to use this activity in a way that is meaningful for those students. This activity can also be used with older ages by having the students record their predictions about what will happen if they use a louder voice, or a deeper pitch with the sound. The students could then compare their results with other students in the class.

    Students use a bowl, plastic wrap, a rubber band, and sugar crystals to investigate sound. The plastic wrap is secured across the top of the bowl with the rubber band, and the sugar crystals are placed on top of the plastic wrap. Students get close to the bowl and say their name aloud. The sugar crystals move!

      3.1.1 Generate sounds using different materials, objects and techniques. Record the sounds and then discuss and share the results. 3.1.3 Investigate and recognize that sound moves through solids, liquids and gases (e.g., air). Differentiation: Assign a student with poor fine motor skills a partner to do their hole poking for them.  With their partner, have students build their telephones with help from a peer.  Although this project may seem simple to build, students with under-developed motor skills would have great difficulty with this task.  Having a students get help from a peer would allow them to complete the task and practice working collaboratively with others.

    In this activity, students will create a telephone using paper cups and string.  Students will use their telephones to observe how sound and vibrations travel through air.

    state standard: 3.1.1 This is an activity that has a lot of depth to it. This is a good opportunity to establish groups that have a variety of ability levels in it. It may be an actiity that couldbe done as a whole class activity. Vibrations and how sounds are transmitted and heard is something that students are fascinated by.

    Since you're using a third grade standard (and most of the standards dealing with sound are third grade standards), I would also tag this as a "grade 3" activity and also tag with "sound" and "physical science"

      After exploring as a group, have students build a structure at home that they believe is the most structurally sound as well as tallest possible. The guidelines for this project are as follows: The stucture can only be made out of spaghetti and marshmallows.The budget for thier structure is $200 (not real money). Each marshmallow (hypothetically) costs $10 and each strand of uncooked spaghetti costs $5. The structure must hold a stuffed gorilla that weighs 5 oz. The tallest structure wins. My sister's kids do this project. It is required for 4th and 5th graders, but it is open to the whole school. Her kids have been doing it since 1st grade and love it. Every year they try a new design and take pictures of models past.

If the students are feeling somewhat comfortable with the new language, they can be paired with English speaking students to work together to spell and sound out words for their notebooks. This activity can be modified for older age groups by having the students make predictions about what is going to happen with the weather conditions. These students can also make predictions about why they think the seasons change.

    Students can participate in this long-term activity by observing and recording the weather each week of the school term, or the school year. The students can do various activities within this long-term activity, such as measuring the amount of rain or snow, recording weather conditions, making observations in a notebook, etc. This is a great way to observe and learn the seasons!

      Adaptions: have the ELL and special need students (as well as whole class in order not to single out students) draw a demonstration of how + & - affect each other before doign the experiment in oder to enhance understanding of what the objects represent in regards to their charge. Extensions: You can extend this activity to younger get students by using balloons and rubbing them on their heads. Also, draw a demonstration showing the charges. Then, have the students determine how the positive charge of the balloon affects different items.
