Education is all about learning through innovative solutions, and Open Access (OA) and Open Source (OS) projects drive the goal to bring educational materials to the public through technology. While we have listed some finalized resources in this compilation of the top 50 OA|OS education projects, the focus is on methodologies within OA|OS initiatives.

The 2010 Global Education Conference is being held November 15 - 19, 2010, online and free.  Sessions will take place in multiple time zones and multiple languages over the five days.   For those "tweeting," the hashtag is #globaled10.The conference is a collaborative and world-wide community effort to significantly increase opportunities for globally-connecting education activities.   Our goal is to help you make connections with other educators and students, and for this reason the conference is very inclusive and also is provides broad opportunities for participating and presenting.   While we have an amazing list of expert presenters and keynote speakers, we will also have some number of presenters who either have not presented before or have not presented in Elluminate--please encourage and support them, as  they are likely to be a little nervous! There is no formal registration required for the conference, as all the sessions will be open and public, broadcast live using the Elluminate platform, and available in recorded formats afterwards.  There is a limit of 500 live attendees for any given session.   Links to watch the sessions will be posted the weekend before the conference begins, in the "Sessions" and "Schedule" pages, and recording links will be listed in the session descriptions soon after each day's sessions.  To verify that your computer system is configured correctly to access Elluminate, please run the self-test here.   

Open Educational Resources (OER) provide a strategic opportunity to improve the quality of education as well as facilitate policy dialogue, knowledge sharing and capacity building.Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning or research materials that are in the public domain or released with an intellectual property license that allows for free use, adaptation, and distribution.

I increasingly fear that the open educational resources movement is being used as a way of perpetuating inequalities in education while purporting to be democratic. Some components of OERs also smack of hypocrisy, elitism and cultural imperialism (the bad), as well as failure to apply best practices in teaching and learning (the ugly). Despite my support for the idea of sharing in education (the good), these concerns have been gnawing away at me for some time, so after 42 years of working in open learning, I feel it’s time to provide a critique of the open educational resources ‘movement’.

We are extraordinarily proud to share these award-winning educational wikis on Wikispaces. In different ways, each is an example of how wikis can be used to break down borders and build unique and captivating experiences that learners and educators will remember for years to come.

In this presentation I argue that the role of the educator has become unbundled and is now a wide variety of different roles, usually performed by different people. (Seminar)

1. Learners should be in control of their own learning. Autonomy is key. Educators can initiate, curate, and guide. But meaningful learning requires learner-driven activity 2. Learners need to experience confusion and chaos in the learning process. Clarifying this chaos is the heart of learning. 3. Openness of content and interaction increases the prospect of the random connections that drive innovation 4. Learning requires time, depth of focus, critical thinking, and reflection. Ingesting new information requires time for digestion. Too many people digitally gorge without digestion time. 5. Learning is network formation. Knowledge is distributed. 6. Creation is vital. Learners have to create artifacts to share with others and to aid in re-centering exploration beyond the artifacts the educator has provided. 7. Making sense of complexity requires social and technological systems. We do the former better than the latter.

Teachers all over the world are using Skype to make learning more exciting and memorable. It's easy to see why: Skype offers an immediate way to help students discover new cultures, languages and ideas, all without leaving the classroom.

This volume presents advanced research on digital content creation, its socio-cultural contexts, and educational consequences. In the midst of ubiquitous commercial hype about digital innovation, as well as policy concerns, the volume offers the sobering perspectives of theory-driven empirical research, in order to examine the complexities, highlight the nuances, and illuminate the pedagogical affordances of creative digital contents.

Between November 2nd and 4th, 2010, and thanks to the support of the Division for Lifelong Learning, I attended OpenEd 2010 in Barcelona, the first time the annual conference has taken place outside of North America.

Rather than cover all the sessions I attended I’ll focus instead on eight messages and lessons that I took away from the conference. Here they are (in no particular order):
