"It would be very easy not to co-operate, and then it wouldn't work", that's still the important part. I'm sure Dario LOVES this paper. Would be nice to have a coffee with him right now...

UNITED KINGDOM SPACE AGENCY UKSA (fake website) - 3 views

according to the normal website (http://www.bnsc.gov.uk/): "The UK Space Agency website will officially launch on 1 April 2010. Until then, the BNSC website will be in a state of transition " the guys above i think just take the piss coz theres no official website. Mission statement: TOGETHER WE ARE GOING TO EMBARK ON A JOURNEY INTO SPACE. ..........................THE MISSION IS......MARS................................."
  •
I've just read a blog entry about this on New Scientist, and while the entry itself is not interesting, I learned from it where the UKSA and ESA's UK establishment are going to be based. Answer: it's even more in the middle of nowhere than Plymouth! BTW does anyone (Leo?) know what is the basis on which new ESA establishments locations are chosen (if this info is classified, you can send it on priv ;) [Edit] Esa has released a news item about it... Whatever one can say about the British Space Agency, they certainly have a fantastic logo!

Juxi are you following this one? any idea on its purpose?
  •
Not that I'm an expert in the field in any way, but there are two things I could think of: 1) possibility of bringing the payload back means that it can collect huge amounts of data which wouldn't be possible to be transferred via radio in reasonable time and/or you can bring back data you don't want to be intercepted by enemy 2) I remember reading somewhere that possibility of re-entry from orbit means you can strike any country without violating the airspace of the neighbouring countries. As the project is now managed by military, a purely civil purpose can be safely ruled out in my opinion.

New Intel Sensor Could Cut Electricity Bill - 3 views

  • Once connected, the sensor will wirelessly connect to all electrical devices in the house and self configure to record the voltages from each source in real time.
  •
"The first thing everyone did after seeing the energy graph on the family PC was to turn off the lights". Kind-of we are becoming slaves of the technology. Do we really need a sensor to tell us to turn-off the light when we are leaving the room!?

I think it's time to quote "Calvin & Hobbes" (yes, I'm still the guy who knows a C&H for any situation in life) "Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." One should sue this idiot for racism against extraterrestrials!!

Dark matter 'no result' comes under fire - 3 views

  • On Monday the XENON100 collaboration published an analysis of the first experimental results from its dark-matter detector. It reported no evidence of dark matter, the substance thought to constitute over 80% of mass in the universe. The experiment covered a similar parameter range as dark-matter searches DAMA and CoGeNT, which have previously claimed possible evidence for dark matter. As a result, the XENON100 team concluded that both the DAMA and CoGeNT evidence could be excluded. But now the DAMA and CoGeNT collaborations claim that the XENON100 researchers' analysis is flawed, and that their original evidence for dark matter should remain intact
