Vivos Underground Survival Shelter Network for 2012 and Beyond - 0 views

  •
The world will end on 21.12.2012, the Maya knew this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04OilEWckAU in German,) so be prepared! There should be an extra shelter for all (Ex-)ACT members. This would be real fun!! Endless strategic meetings on how to survive after apocalypse!
  •
No, Luzi, there was an error in the profecy transcription... they meant that Italy would end in 2012, not the world..... and they seem to be quite right according to most observers. I am actually surprised it lasted so long!!!
  •
Of course one of the major reasons behind the apocalypse will be European football championship taking place in Poland+Ukraine...

Google AI experiment: fast drawing for everyone - 0 views

  •
AutoDraw is a new kind of drawing tool. It pairs machine learning with drawings from talented artists to help everyone create anything visual, fast. There's nothing to download. Nothing to pay for. And it works anywhere: smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop, etc. AutoDraw's suggestion tool uses the same technology used in QuickDraw, to guess what you're trying to draw. Right now, it can guess hundreds of drawings and we look forward to adding more over time. If you are interested in creating drawings for others to use with AutoDraw, contact us here. We hope AutoDraw will help make drawing and creating a little more accessible and fun for everyone.

Dronestagr.am launches to showcase the world's best aerial drone pix - 4 views

  •
Demand for drones is exploding! Dupin wants to aggregate aerial imagery from around the globle at Dronestagr.am. In the near future we could experience something close to google maps, made with aerial pictures.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Fun, but what would be the added benefit over high resolution satellite images?
  •
Remember that drones have top-view camera and front-view camera which gives more possibilities in terms of what you can do with collected data. With such a huge database and a little bit of 3D geometry we could get e.g. a 3D map of the world... I guess google can derive something like that already from their streetview images however obviously street view covers some relatively small part of the globe and also can not access places that UAV can.
  •
Here there's an example of a 3D picture of Tokyo (in high resolution). It is not made by drones, but I think it is something we can use them for. http://360gigapixels.com/tokyo-tower-panorama-photo/

Kerbal Space Program | Media - 2 views

what seems to be an impressively detailed space game

Yeah... 2011 called with the greetings. However, there was quite an interesting news about KSP recently... Perhaps it's been ACT's small failure to spot this opportunity? Considering we wrote space missions games ourselves...
  •
This guy actually makes very detailed video tutorials about how to master the orbital dynamics in Kerbal. I think the level of detail (and sometimes realism) is quite impressive: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxzC4EngIsMrPmbm6Nxvb-A
  •
I will have to try this definitely, looks like a lot of fun.. I also saw some crazy 'Insane Rocket Division' videos.. :)
  •
@Marek: true, old news. But "opportunity"? For what? The games we write are always games with a scientific purpose (not training not educational) Kerbal Space programme is cool, but it is a game just like Microsoft Flight Simulator (but less accurate). Having ESA mission simulated in it is also cool but is it what we should or could do? Even more is it want we want to do? My personal opinion: No-No-No
  •
    > The games we write are always games with a scientific purpose (not training not educational) I'd say investigating how to get the crowd may be an important part of "science of crowdsourcing". So, an obvious example would be comparing how many participants the original ACT space mission game attracted versus a variant implemented in Kerbal and why. Easily made and easily publishable I think. But that's just an obvious example I can give on the spot. I think there is more potential than that, so would not dismiss the idea so definitively. But then, correct me if I'm wrong, social sciences are still not represented in the ACT... Perhaps an idea to revive during the upcoming retreat? ;-)

Research Blog: Inceptionism: Going Deeper into Neural Networks - 0 views

Deep neural networks "dreaming" psychedelic images
  • ...3 more comments...
  •
Although that's not technically correct. The networks don't actually generate the images, rather the features that get triggered in the network already get amplified through some heuristic. Still fun tho`
  •
    Now in real time: http://www.twitch.tv/317070
  •
Yes, true for the later images, but for the first images they start with random noise and a 'natural image' prior, no? But I guess calling it "hallucinating" might have been more accurate ;)

You know you have been in Finland too long, when... - 4 views

How you know you have been to long in xy. The Finnish version. My favorite is 33. You accept that 80°C in a sauna is chilly, but 20°C outside is freaking hot. Quite a lot of them are outdated, esp. about opening hours of shops, and one is definitely missing. Your normal mealtime has shifted to 11am for lunch and 5pm for dinner. But don't worry, it's a really comfy place here, isnt' it Jose??

well somethings you get used to in a year (like salmiakki or koskenkorva) others don't (seriously, lunch at 11?!?!)
  •
But what stage are you in already, Luzi?
  •
I would say a 50% Finn. I do have lunch at 11am, every working day, an 80 degrees sauna indeed is just a warm room. But I will never get used to salmiakki (which is just literally eating a cleaning agent!!) and you can imagine that "silence is fun" is not really MY motto...
  •
True?? 22. You understand why the Finnish language has no future tense. No, I don't think I ever will understand that one... Finns are quite future-oriented at two particular times of the year. On the day after Midsummer (see above), they say "Well, it's all downhill from now on" and prepare feverishly for winter, and similarly after December 21st they perk up and start thinking about Midsummer - ignoring the fact that they still have to get through January, February and March before the place becomes inhabitable again...
  •
... Finnish language has no future tense. That's true
  •
everything expressed with "tomorrow I go to " or "in one year" etc? what about the distinction between to future events, one conditional on the other?
