    Sand is everywhere and we hardly notice it. Yet it is also in great demand worldwide - and not just in the construction industry. It also plays an important role in the manufacturing of glass and semiconductors and in water treatment. Due to this intensive use in recent years, sand has become a scarce resource that is traded internationally. The effect of the depletion of this resource on coastal regions and the people that live there is the topic of a new research project at the Max PLANCK Institute for Social Anthropology (MPI). Titled "Sand - The Future of Coastal Cities in the Indian Ocean", the project is funded by a 1.3 million euro grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

    The radula is the main feeding organ and also very significant to the majority of the mollusks (especially gastropod) taxonomy. With shell morphology, radular morphology is the key characteristic for the identification of gastropod species. The shape and structure of the radular teeth are unique from family to species level. In this study, five basic types of radula (i.e., docoglossan, rhipidoglossan, taenioglossan, stenoglossan, and toxoglossan), which were observed from a total of 23 different species belonging to 12 families, were examined. Collection of the voucher intertidal gastropod specimen for the study had initiated during May-October 2019 in the rocky intertidal area near Veraval of the south Saurashtra coastline. Direct handpicking methods were used for the collection of the specimen for experiments.

Hadal Biodiversity, Habitats and Potential Chemosynthesis in the Java Trench, Eastern I... - 0 views

    The Java Trench is the only subduction trench in the Indian Ocean that extends to the hadal zone (> 6,000 m water depth), and except for sevenbenthic trawls acquired around the 1950s, there has been little to no sampling at hadal depths undertaken since. In 2019, we undertook a 5-day expedition comprising a scientific dive using a full ocean depth-rated submersible, the DSV Limiting Factor, seven hadal-lander deployments, and high-resolution bathymetric survey. The submersible performed a video transect from the deepest point of the trench, up a 150 m high near-vertical escarpment located on the forearc, and then across a plateau at a depth of ∼7,050 m to make in situ observations of the habitat heterogeneity and biodiversity inhabiting these hadal depths. We found the Java Trench hadal community to be diverse and represented by 10 phyla, 21 classes, 34 orders and 55 families, with many new records and extensions in either depth or geographic range, including a rare encounter of a hadal ascidian. The submersible transect revealed six habitats spanning the terrain. The deepest trench axis comprised fine-grained sediments dominated by holothurians, whereas evidence of active rock slope failure and associated talus deposits were prevalent in near-vertical and vertical sections of the escarpment. Sediment pockets and sediment pouring down the steep wall in "chutes" were commonly observed. The slope terrain was dominated by two species in the order Actiniaria and an asteroid, as well as 36 instances of orange, yellow, and white bacterial mats, likely exploiting discontinuities in the exposed bedrock, that may indicate a prevalence of chemosynthetic input into this hadal ecosystem. Near the top of the escarpment was an overhang populated by > 100 hexactinellid (glass) sponges.     Changes in marine ecosystems from human stressors, and concerns over how species will respond to these changes have emphasized the importance of understanding and monitoring crucial demographic parameters for population models. Long-lived, migratory, marine vertebrates such as sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to changes. Life-history parameters like growth-in-body size can be largely influenced by environmental processes which can impact population growth. We analyzed a 40-year (1981-2021) capture-mark-recapture dataset from the protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles, to estimate key population parameters, including body growth, for immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). Curved carapace length (CCL) range was 34.3-110.9 cm (mean ± SD: 51.0 ± 11.4 cm, n = 1191) for green turtles and 28.7-89.4 cm (47.7 ± 14.4 cm, n = 538) for hawksbill turtles. Recapture events, with an 11-month minimum period, revealed a mean annual growth rate of 3.2 ± 1.5 cm year−1 for green turtles (n = 75) and 2.8 ± 1.4 cm year−1 for hawksbill turtles (n = 110). Hawksbill turtles exhibited a non-monotonic growth rate while no significant growth-size relationship was detected for green turtles. Green turtle mean annual growth per 10-cm size class was highest in the larger size classes (50‒69.9 cm). Hawksbill turtle growth rate was highest in the larger size classes (50‒69.9 cm) then declined in the largest size class (70‒79.9 cm). Green turtles and hawksbill turtles may spend > 8 and 18 years, respectively, using Aldabra, Seychelles, as a foraging ground.
