Understanding Media Literacy - 0 views

    A film available on OhioLINK. \n\nTV and radio commercials, Web sites and banner ads, magazine ads, pop songs, photos, and even news articles and textbooks: all of them are sending messages to influence the reader/viewer/listener. How do they grab the attention? What are they selling-a product or service? a lifestyle? an ideology?-and why? Would a different media consumer interpret the message differently? This program raises more questions than it answers, which is the whole point: to prompt students to question, question, question the messages they are bombarded with daily. Savvy media consumers aren't born; they're made, and this program is an excellent tool for shaping the classroom dialogue. (35 minutes)

    Poor nutritional practices and heightened levels of stress, two common attributes of university life, are strongly linked with weight gain and decreased health. Little research has examined the relationships between university students' lifestyle factors and campus eating behaviours; therefore, this study aimed to examine relationships between lifestyle and campus eating behaviour. Both lifestyle and eating behaviour questionnaires were developed and administered to male and female undergraduate students at a Canadian university. Students whose living arrangements had not changed since high school consumed less alcohol than individuals who moved away from their previous dwellings. Fast food consumption was also significantly related to lower physical activity levels and higher expenditures for food on campus. Males also consumed more alcohol than females and spent more money for food on campus. Conclusion. Relationships do exist between lifestyle and campus eating behaviour. These results may be used as a foundation for future research on the effect of lifestyle on eating behaviours and nutritional status in university age student

Media Literacy in the Risk Society: Toward a Risk Reduction Strategy - 0 views

    The idea of media literacy prompts an increasingly divisive debate between educators who wish to protect children from the commercialization of global markets and those who challenge critical media studies as misguided, outdated, and ineffective. We have provided a historical overview of changing conceptions of media literacy as preparation and protection in market society, arguing that contemporary concerns about children's fast food marketing and sedentary lifestyles call for new approaches to the education of citizen-consumers in a risk society. Our case study demonstrates that a media education programme can provide scaffolding for children's critical thinking about their sedentary lifestyles and media consumption. In her journal she attempts to define exactly what financial literacy is. She argues that many other scholars will not address this part of the subject, which she thinks is the main problem. She also goes on to state just what kinds of obstacles people face who do not have the knowledge, or are not well educated on Financial Literacy. She even makes a statement that it is her belief that the US has problems with welfare because of lack of finance knowledge, especially when it comes to spending. The information will serve great purpose for my introduction and conclusion as well as backup for my main paragraphs.

In the journal, there was a study done on high school and college level aged students who were asked questions regarding inflation, interest rates, and risk diversification. The best part of this article is that it show that students who are from a solid background, or have been to college, know much more about financiall literacy and how their money will spent in the future. I can use much of this information and studies in my paper.

This source talks almost every main issue that has to do with underage drinking and teenagers. It gives convincing evidence that alcohol ads are being aimed at a crowd who isnt legal to consume them, but it also questions the morality of doing this by giving facts about alcohol related deaths in minors.

In this study, it was proposed that the alcoholic drinks that are most often consumed by minors, are often put in magazines as advertisements that underage men and women are most likely to read. The study took place between 2002-06 and the results were not friendly. It was obvious after the study concluded, alcoholic drinks popular to minors were frequently put in the magazines with higher youth readership. Alcohol companies are focusing their ads to seek out the younger crowd through the popular magazines they choose to read. Although just an abstract, it will make a good reference on studies that have gained valuable research.

This doesnt mean its only appeals to underage viewers, many legal consumers also watch college sports which makes a good argument for the people who are trying to get thier product advertised during these games. This site also talks about other ways ads reach minors and what effects and influences are given based of a number of statistics.

One reason for a decrease in Braille reading is the improvement of medical technology. There are more children today that are become visually impaired due to an accident and these children more than likely have multiple disabilities. These children's primary handicap is not listed as a visual one therefore it seems that children with visual impairments may be declining, and with that goes funding for Braille programs. Another reason is technology. It is easier today to convince Americans that technology is a better means for a visually impaired person to communicate than Braille. Also, there is discussion over many people turning to technology to communicate because learning Braille is difficult and time consuming. Finally, this article gives hope that these issues will be more widely recognized in the future.
