It's an incredibly creative toy, but it can also be used to support work in a number of different curriculum areas. Here is our HUGE list of ways to use Lego in the classroom. Many of these ideas have been contributed by our wonderful Facebook community. If you have any other suggestions, please add a comment at the bottom of the page. Don't forget that many of these activities could use Duplo too!"

Lego fans, grab your iPad… there is a free instruction source for things to build | iGo With My iPad - 5 views

"Until recently, we have always had a big bowl of Legos on the conference room table. They are great to 'toy' with when waiting for folks to gather rather than have our noses buried in our mobile device screens. There are folks that can look at a pile of Legos and see a fire engine waiting to be built. There is the rest of us that see a lot of fun lockable color blocks."

"Learn how to make LEGO Stop Motion Videos with the LEGO Movie Maker Application on your smart phone! The same skills are applicable for other Stop Motion applications on iPhone and Android! I recommend trying the 'iMotion application'. It has a lot of good features like focus lock, and if you have a 2nd device, you can also get 'imotion remote'. This allows you to use the 2nd device as a shutter button!"

How To Teach Math With LEGOs | Edudemic - 2 views

  •
"Using Legos in the classroom is not a new concept at all. There are so many different classroom applications for the popular brightly colored bricks, and despite the myriad of uses, the go-to task for Legos is most often math. The handy little nubs sitting atop the bricks offer a chance to teach things like area and perimeter, the different colors lend themselves well to fractions. "

An Amazingly Effective Way To Help Your Child Master Math Skills With LEGO Blocks - 1 views

"Lego is phenomenal super-toy, which helps stimulate kids' creativity, imagination, as well as logical thinking. Yet, school teacher Alycia Zimmerman do not only use it as a toy, but also as a great aid to develop basic math skills among her young minds. Lego blocks, she finds, are good tool to explain fractions, squares and other mathematical concepts. "In the classroom, the tiny bricks are now my favorite possibility-packed math manipulative," she writes in an article for Scholastic that goes more into depth about these bricks' potential uses."

LEGO makes a big announcement at CES 2016 | ZDNet - 5 views

  •
"My finger painting childhood aside, it's no wonder STEM education is being touted with some urgency. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that by 2020 the U.S. will create 1.4 million jobs in computer science-related fields. If current trends continue, U.S. citizens with the necessary skills and experience will fill only 30% of those jobs. Today, like a reconfigurable horse to the rescue, LEGO Education announced its new robot-based learning system, which it hopes teachers will incorporate into their curricula. Motorized LEGOs in school? Dude ..."

Play with LEGO - 1 views

  •
"I have always had a love for hands on learning and play. I have seen this type of learning continue to get stifled in schools with all the pressures mounting on schools, teachers, and students. As stress, fatigue, anxiety, and burnout continue to increase for both students and adults I see a bigger need to help support education with infusing more play and wonder into the classroom. I have decided to do something about it. After leading several PD sessions and workshops using LEGO and other materials as a way to bring excitement to learning I realize I can do more. Starting the week of April 15th I will begin a 6 week course on Purposeful Play using only LEGO. "

8 Questions to Ask When Designing STEM for Girls | EdSurge News - 2 views

  •
"My colleague and I walked into a room filled with a dozen fifth-grade girls snacking on pretzels and huddling around a LEGO robot they had named Kitty. Two of them were laughing about the goggles they had made out of robot wheels, while another small group crowded around a laptop to program wheel rotations. The rest attempted to drive Kitty through what looked like an obstacle course. It was our first glimpse into life as mentors for the Girl Scouts of Western Washington's LEGO League, a competition that combines programming LEGO Mindstorms robots, team project planning, and creative problem solving to get kids excited about science and technology."

IT MAY NOT BE EPIC,BUT IT'S STILL AN AWESOMELEGO WALL! - Tackk - 1 views

  •
"To be honest, I had longed for the epic Lego wall that has graced so many makerspace blogs and websites.  But I didn't have the wall space for it, and I prefer furniture and resources that can serve dual purposes. Being a proponent of Theodore Roosevelt's motto of "Do what you can with what you have where you are" I became resourceful.  So with my Scholastic Book Fair points, I chose a metal cabinet from the rewards catalog to serve as both makerspace storage and a movable awesome Lego wall. With some heavy-duty magnets affixed to the back with a hot glue gun, our baseplates could be used both horizontally and vertically.  Bound by limitations, I was able to find a away to create something new that would fit the needs of our library and our students."

Two Seattle girls launched a balloon to the edge of space this weekend, and have the video to prove it - GeekWire - 1 views

  •
"On Saturday, a handmade craft rose 78,000 feet to capture the view from the edge of space. The craft, built by two Seattle youngsters, reached speeds of over 100 km/h on its journey over central Washington. Kimberly and Rebecca Yeung built their spacecraft out of wood and broken arrow shafts, but it flew twice as high as commercial aircraft usually travel. Attached to a weather balloon filled with helium was a flight computer tracking their craft, two GoPro cameras, and a picture of their cat next to a Lego R2-D2. Called the Loki Lego Launcher, the craft was named after that cat and the figurine."
