You're 96 Percent Less Creative Than You Were as a Child. Here's How to Reverse That | ... - 2 views

"If you haven't said it yourself, someone has said it to you: "I'm just not that creative." Most of us wouldn't mind being just a little more creative. Fortunately, you can. Not only are there proven ways to increase your creativity, but also, according to research, all of us have a creative gene. In a longitudinal test of creative potential, a NASA study found that of 1,600 4- and 5-year-olds, 98 percent scored at "creative genius" level. Five years later, only 30 percent of the same group of children scored at the same level, and again, five years later, only 12 percent. When the same test was administered to adults, it was found that only two percent scored at this genius level. According to the study, our creativity is drained by our education. As we learn to excel at convergent thinking--or the ability to focus and hone our thoughts--we squash our instinct for divergent, or generative, thought. The 5-year-old in us never goes away, though. Here are four ways to rediscover your creative genius."

"The Makerspace movement has been steadfastly gaining traction in education, and rightly so; what better way to incite creativity, encourage inventiveness, and just generally let kids have fun than by giving them Things and asking them to Make Something? One great way to introduce the concept of making to your school is through a Maker Madness Tournament.  This structured, guided, tiered competition gives faculty and students some great exposure to what it means to be a Maker while cashing in on the inherent joy that children find in some friendly competition!"

How To Design A Wikipedia Writing & Research Assignment - - 3 views

  •
"That you probably use Wikipedia but tell your students not to is why we're here. Wikipedia has long been the bane of educators-a poster child for the 'don't believe everything you read on the internet because anyone can publish anything' movement. While making for wonderful subject matter in teaching credibility, authority, source citations, and more, the idea of actually using Wikipedia to teach explicitly teach research for an entire unit is lesson common. Luckily, the good folks at Wikipedia Education have you covered with the following (very long) unit. In the unit, students will create, edit, expand, and otherwise immerse themselves in the surprisingly complex world of public-knowledge-article editing."

The Garage Mindset: How tech giants keep the innovation spirit alive - West Side Ideas - 2 views

  •
"California is often said to have two beating hearts: culture in the South, around Los Angeles and Hollywood, and technology in the North around San Francisco and the Silicon Valley. Their complementarity is key to the region's success, and has generated widely popular combinations such as Netflix or Apple Music. And of course, they both rely on heavy doses of innovation. It's no coincidence that they were both born in a garage."

Knowing how fake news preys on your emotions can help you spot it | CBC News - 1 views

  •
"A federal election is coming and Canadians should be wary of being exposed to fake and misleading news, particularly on social media. What you need to look out for most during this election cycle is your own emotional bias. This is what leads us to share fake news without checking the facts first.  We have been researching the psychology of fake news for almost three years now, with the goal of finding out why people believe fake news and what each of us do to avoid falling for it ourselves. We have uncovered a few answers; one of the most important of which was recently detailed in a paper titled Reliance on Emotion Promotes Belief in Fake News. "
