The apptivities website at  http://www.apptivities.org/ ... a specific learning activity using apps on mobile devices.  A key part of our vision for apptivities is to provide media resources that give a "view" into best practices in the classroom. apptivities: Models for successful instructional practices with mobile devices It's the application of apps for learning.

"In an effort to incorporate the iPads into small group intervention stations for middle school math, I spent a few hours collaborating with Cheryl Mutz, an NEISD district Math Instructional Specialist, to create an apptivity to support the study of sequences in 8th Math. The intervention apptivity would be used in a small group setting (two students to an iPad) and the students would have 30-45 minutes to complete the task."

"Procedural crime dramas are very popular and for good reason. They use evidence and science to analyze a mystery and uncover answers - a great metaphor for what a classroom learning experience can be. In this apptivity, we will learn about fingerprints, create digital images of our own, and then use annotation tools to help us identify the cheesecake thief!"

"Students in our 1:1 iPad class bring their own devices to school, loaded with a set list of apps. There are very few "drill and practice" apps, rather those that allow for creativity and true demonstration of understanding. Our maths lessons have been completely transformed with the wide array of opportunities now available with apps such as Doodle Buddy, Number Pieces, Captions and Explain Everything."

"We have recently started a class Twitter feed to extend our classroom beyond its walls and share our learning with the world. The students are so thrilled to upload their work samples for parents, teachers and other classes around the world to see. They excitedly wait to see whether we have any new followers or replies and my inbox is crowded with emails from my students sending me examples of their iPad work to post. They love to hear my laptop "ping", indicating a new email, and announce matter-of-factly to the class "That was me, just sending you my work for our Twitter". This latest technological venture for us has brought a new-found sense of enthusiasm to our learning environment. Last week as part of our History studies we connected with experts via Twitter to completely transform our History assessment. The existing assessment task required students to observe photos of old and new technology and pose and answer questions based on what they could see in the images. I immediately thought of Twitter and the possibility of engaging with experts to answer our questions, and provide us with new information that we could not gain ourselves by analyzing a photograph."

"Over the school holidays I have been playing around with an app called Aurasma, in the hope of creating an activity for reading groups to enhance our vocabulary studies. We already do a number of activities with iPads that enhance explicit vocabulary instruction, but this is going to be different. I think this activity is going to blow the kids away, and I'm so looking forward to seeing their faces when they use it for the first time."
