"Like myself, other students with learning difficulties-from dysgraphia (a difficulty with writing, mainly in spelling) and attention disorders like ADD and ADHD-respond well to visual or tactile learning and activities that allow physical participation, according to the U.S. Department of Education. And these learning impediments are not as uncommon as you might imagine. In the US alone, approximately eight percent of children were identified by a health professional as having a learning disorder, according to a 2014 study. As these types of difficulties become more recognized every day, the importance of adjusting teaching methods has started to increase accordingly."

"Using games to teach can increase student engagement and add meaning to learning. Hands-on apps give children the ability to mix tactile play with a digital experience. Thanks to augmented reality, more and more apps in the market blur the line between digital and analog. Many of my students have ipods. These mini music makers are captivating them…truth be told, my ipod touch captivates me! I feel as though we could use these ipods to, not only increase the interest factor of lessons, but also to encourage students to become involved in their learning process.

In today's world, where information and conversations are continually at our finger tips, new technologies and new approaches to teaching and learning are becoming of increasing interest to educators. The most prominent changes center on how we relate to others and how we relate to information. This 216 hour online certificate program explores the changing landscape of technology, information, communication, fostering discussion on how these trends impact learning and teaching. This certificate is a joint initiative of Extended Education and the Learning Technologies Centre at the University of Manitoba.

Our goal is to increase the quality of our students' writing skills by sharing knowledge among experts and practitioners.
