I love the set up of your page. How did you do this?
    • Kimberly Barss

If you turn editing on and click the little "edit" icon you can format a lot of what the home page looks like....the Wiki turned out better than I expected, I'm not sure how it would go over in "reality" with students though. I'm so scared of some activities just flopping and being total failures! What about you?

  •  “One of [a successful student's] key skills in school is his ability to bond with teachers. We’ve spent a generation trying to reorganize schools to make them better, but the truth is that people learn from the people they love.”
  • computers and technology cannot replace the ability of skillful teachers to develop a young student’s ability to think critically, be innovative, and believe in the potential that he or she possess.  A computer will never be able to provide a safe environment for a child seeking stability and support.

WebElements Periodic Table of the Elements | Chlorine | Images of elements - 0 views

  • The above pictures are adapted with permission from Theodore Gray's Periodic Table Table web site, an excellent source of element pictures, interactive pictures, and videos.

When using the tabs at the top of the home page, it filter out information that the user isn't interested in. So, by clicking "pictures" I did not get any text descriptions...As an instructor, this is a great resource since it cuts down on the "noise" of the page and allows you to quickly access the links to the pictures that you want to show students. If I linked directly to this page from my course site, it would eliminate a student getting lost in an outside resource. Also, this particular page links to another resource: "Gray's Periodic Table." Click through it and enjoy :-)

click the video above to play. The video shows a (brief) demonstration of that colors that different metals burn...beautiful...Relating this to teaching and learning: students (and teachers!) are much more engaged with proper and frequent use of attention-grabbing media. I am a visual person and I know that my classroom also has visual learners. I can describe things in text or verbally until I am blue in the face, but SEEING these things in photos or on videos is what sets it apart and commits them to memory. Above is a picture of sodium in its natural state as a metal...I try to emphasize this to my students since often the examples we use in class is sodium chloride, or table salt. A silver metal bonded to a noxious green gas combines to make table salt. That's a hard thing to imagine for anyone, so I show them using this resource. I LOVE webelements.

Learning styles research - 0 views

  • The authors concluded that local health education students enrolled in an online class are likely to have different learning styles than equivalent on-campus students. Online students were more independent, and on-campus students more dependent, in their styles as learners. The on-campus students seemed to match the profile of traditional students who are willing to work in class provided they can obtain rewards for working with others, and for meeting teacher expectations. Online students appeared to be driven more by intrinsic motives and clearly not by the reward structure of the class.

-We learn from our peers - students look at resources or videos, then when they connect with each other, this is when they really get it. -Lecture is taken out of the classroom so that students are free to actually communicate with each other. This increases the potential of what can happen in class. -You need to core toolkit in order to go into the project. These projects help students to internalize the material.

Do we think this is true? Is it better to do one thing well or many things at a lower level? I am not sure this is arguing a positive.
  • doing a lot, but accomplishing nothing

Again, I wonder how true this is. It sounds overly negative to me. When I rapidly switch, I would not say that I accomplish absolutely nothing.

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
