WebAIM: Screen Reader Simulation - 0 views

  •
WebAIM has many resources available for those interested in web accessibility. This screen reader simulation will provide insight into what it might be like to experience a website through the use of a screen reader. Screen readers are software programs that narrate the text of the desktop and any applications used for those who have visual impairments.

Jing, screenshot and screencast software from TechSmith - 1 views

For the Moduel 4 assignment I explored and practiced using Jing. I know Alex has used it many times in our course. I will use it in the beginning of my course to help student get familiar with blackboard. Many of my students in previous semesters are unfamilar with blackboard. Having a screencast video can help them to feel comfortable with blackboard and help to resolve many questions that students will have right from the beginning.
  • Take Screenshots: Capture an image of what you see on your computer screen Record Screencasts: Record up to 5 minutes of onscreen video
  • Jing eliminates a lot of phone and email time

In previous semester I received several emails at the beginning of the course about how to use the online discussion boards, how to upload files, how to download article etc. Having a video screencast can allow students to watch step by step how to do all of these thing.

Unshielded Colliders: Poverty and Education - 0 views

For example, Mel Riddile points out that when one conditions on various measures of poverty, instead of trailing other nations, the U.S. actually comes out on top! He concludes that "when it comes to school improvement, it's poverty not stupid." Poverty causes educational deficiency. Now, I like to actually have data to play around with, in part because people have been known to lie about politically charged issues and in part because I like to have nice graphs (which are not provided by Riddile). Anyway, it turns out that international poverty data is pretty hard to come by and fraught with interpretational difficulties. On the other hand, the National Assessment of Educational Progress provides test data for most of the states in the U.S., and the U.S. Census Bureau provides data on the percentage of people in poverty by state. I took the NAEP data for 8th grade science achievement and regressed on the percentage of people below the poverty line for the measured states. The two are negatively associated: as poverty increases, science achievement scores decrease according to the relationship in the plot below. (Alaska, Kansas, Nebraska, and Vermont did not meet NAEP reporting guidelines and are not included in the plot above.) The association is highly significant (p=9.98*10-6). I also took pilot NAEP data for 8th grade mathematics achievement and regressed on the percentage of people below the poverty line for the measured states. (Evidently, the NAEP has only just started testing for mathematics achievement, and only eleven states were included in their pilot.) Again, the two are negatively associated. The slope of the relation turns out to be almost exactly the same as for science achievement. The association is not as significant, but it is still significant (p=0.0186). (My guess is the association is less significant in this case because fewer states were measured.) Clearly there is an association between poverty and achievement in science and mathem

  • communicate with your students, right from the start, what will be required of them as an online learner
  • Guest presenters The advantage of the online learning means that guest presenters can be located anywhere throughout the world. This potentially increasing their availability, flexibility and quality.

  • Blogs There are numerous ways to integrate blogs into an online course. For example, recording a learning experience over a period of time. Students can also review and compare other students' blogs and draw their own conclusions about particular topics.
  • Non - computer based activities Just because an online course is online does not necessarily mean that all learning has to occur in front of the computer screen. Activities can be developed that require students to engage in the physical environment.

Robot avatar allows sick boy to go to school - TODAY Health - TODAY.com - 0 views

  • But now, a 4-foot-tall chrome and steel robot takes Lyndon’s place in classes and allows him to interact with teachers and fellow students. His face is displayed on a screen near the top of the robot and his voice is projected through its speakers. Lyndon can see and hear everyone through signals transmitted to his laptop from the robot’s camera. It's like a video conference — on a robot.
  • The technology that changed Lyndon’s life costs about $6000.

Maintaining a Good (Online) Reputation - 0 views

  • This may sound a little over the top, but a CareerBuilder.com survey found that 45 percent of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates (more than double from the year before). Industries that specialize in technology and sensitive information are most likely to screen job candidates via social networking sites or online search engines. If you’re indiscreet on Facebook, who’s to say you can hold your tongue about Top-Secret government programs?

Education Week: Schools Test E-Reader Devices With Dyslexic Students - 0 views

  • Barnes & Noble's Nook, and the Intel Reader. But the jury is still out on just how effective those digital tools are in helping struggling readers.
  • Foss, who himself has dyslexia, created the Intel Reader, a mobile e-reader that can take pictures of text and then convert the text into an audio file within seconds. Students can also change the size of the text on the screen and the speed of the voice that reads the text aloud.

  • In January, a series of agreements were announced in which universities pledged not to use Amazon's Kindle or any similar devices "unless the devices are fully accessible to students who are blind and have low vision."
  • The iPad, by contrast, has technology that can talk a blind person through whatever screen icons their fingers are touching, Mr. Danielsen said. Since the device's debut, several colleges have announced formal campus iPad initiatives.

Colleges Search for Their Place in the Booming Mobile Web - Technology - The Chronicle ... - 0 views

shared by Amy M on 20 Jun 12 - No Cached
  • Most colleges do not have the resources to build their own mobile applications from scratch. The environment is changing quickly, and developing new products for each new major device—iPhones, BlackBerrys, Android phones, iPads—can be prohibitively expensive.
  • One key to these projects is recognizing the mobility of mobile devices, and not treating them as if they were small desktop computers. Among colleges, even the leading mobile applications and Web sites still function like add-ons; students and others can get much the same information on a personal computer, although perhaps not as quickly.
  • Creating a cohesive mobile platform does not mean that colleges should try to move everything from their Web sites to a smaller screen. It can be impossible to know in advance what people want to do on a smartphone, and what they would prefer to leave to a full-size computer.

Experience the world like a hawk, rat or bee in 3D game - tech - 06 December 2013 - New... - 0 views

  • Schmidt-Morand is especially curious about horses' vision: since their eyes are at the side of their head, they can see what's in front of them, beside them and behind them. Although it would be difficult to recreate this on a screen, it could be possible in a virtual reality room. "It's impossible for me to imagine what this view would even look like," says Schmidt-Morand.
