blogstring.com » Diigo- Social Annotation - 0 views

  • The Good: The “About This Page” info– if it works correctly (it’s a beta, I totally understand when things don’t work quite as expected…..especially when aggregating information from multiple APIs) the About This Page is a useful, central repository of data on a selected page. This feature could be incredibly useful to companies that want to see what people are saying about them, blogs that want to know what their readers think of their stories, and anyone curious about how their information is being perceived by readers. Like the other social annotation services, the “Blog this” option is excellent, as it immediately does a cut and paste + login + compose + automatic reference citation. The interface is also very straight-forward and easy to use. When you log in at diigo, there are no points of confusion, and you can easily access your bookmarks and annotated content wherever you are. I could have really used something like this in college.
  • The Bad: A few technical glitches, but that’s expected at this early stage in the game. The only other problem I see with diigo is that they are in an incredibly crowded space, but I like their angle.
  • Conclusion: Like most of these services, it would be unfair to spend an afternoon trying to scratch the surface and give a detailed review of the features. Now that I’ve got the Firefox plugin installed, I’ll continue giving diigo a shot. To me, it would be interesting to see a side-by-side feature comparison between the different social bookmarking and annotation services out there. But that’s for another day, as this is Sunday, the Patriots are playing now, and the Sox have game seven tonight. Priorities, my friends, priorities.

Recruiting and Sourcing Secrets: TOP 10 WAYS TO SOURCING / RECRUITING - FREELY - 0 views

  • TOP TEN WAYS TO SOURCING / RECRUITING - FREELY 1) DiigoStop adding your favorite links to your browsers.. thats soooo archaic. From the words of my friend Michael Marlatt " With the massive amount of information available or for surfing the web, sourcing for resumes or conducting competitive intelligence, the question is: How do you capture all this wonderful data, create online sticky-notes (reminders), keep it all organized, easily retrievable, simultaneously share (real-time) content with peers or an entire community, and oh by the way do this without your personal computer from anywhere in the world? One answer: Diigo. By accessing ANY available computer, Diigo can offer its users all this functionality and much more. Yeah, I suppose someone out there could quickly argue that there are easily hundreds of other book-marking sites, online clipping services, etc. that offer similar functionality-right? That’s true to some extent; however, you will not find one that currently offers the full suite of solutions and rich functionality that Diigo offers and is still (free).  Or, you might say, there's always book-marking favorites in your browser (old-school) and creating "bookmarklets" so why use Diigo? Hey, let’s be honest, setting up bookmarklets are helpful but the on-going filing and maintenance can be exhaustive especially if you have 100's (if not 1000's) of favorite sites stored in your browser.Diigo will simply your web surfing, data collection, content management, and group-collaboration experience in a way that no other social bookmarking application can right now. " I need not say anymore.

Web Trends - Diigo: Another Del.icio.us? - 0 views

  • Diigo: Another Del.icio.us? by Jason Hahn Diigo (pronounced “deego”) is a brand new social annotation site.  Social annotation is “a superset of social bookmarking,” the site (www.diigo.com) says.  It is similar to del.icio.us in that it is a social bookmarking tool, and even uses the del.icio.us API to give users the ability to simultaneously tag sites on both their Diigo and del.icio.us accounts. The key differentiation between Diigo and del.icio.us is in the specialized annotation features of Diigo.  Users can highlight specific paragraphs or images on a page and post either public or private sticky notes that can be shared with other users who can choose to respond to your sticky notes.  These annotations can be saved for later review and can also be forwarded through e-mail. This further capability and functionality of specialized annotation features is primarily achieved through the Diigo toolbar.  The toolbar allows the user to search through numerous resources and also allows the user to bookmark sites of interest.  The Inbox on the toolbar lets users keep up-to-date with their tags. Though this may put Diigo in contention with del.icio.us, these two sites can also be seen as complements to one another.  Regardless, it seems that social bookmarking is quickly becoming a battleground that leaves the door open to new competitors with fresh ideas, and that annotation may become a key to success in the arena.

MarketingFeeds » TechCrunch » Diigo To Launch WebSlides At TechCrunch40 - 0 views

  • Research megatool Diigo will officially announce its new WebSlides for RSS feeds and Bookmarks feature at TechCrunch40 next week. The new widget is an embeddable player that presents feeds or bookmarks as live web pages in an interactive slideshow format, complete with the full content, pages, links, comments, and ads. The widget can be sent to friends and colleagues and also placed on websites, blogs and in social networks. Each slide that is displayed actually registers as a page view for the content owner. Webslides also allows any Diigo user to annotate each page on the fly with sticky notes to share thoughts or to highlight important sections. Viewers can also bookmark, tag, share, and clip content from the pages in WebSlides for future reference in their own Diigo online folders. To use WebSlides, users enter a feed or list of bookmarks and add background music or voice narration. By clicking “Play,” the list transforms into a slideshow. There’s a lot of competition in this space, but having looked at the product I can see why Diigo qualified for the demo pit at TC40. A widget that includes full content including advertising is a good thing for publishers, and it’s the first slide/ widget I’ve seen that does this. Combined with Diigo’s research capabilities it makes for a great product. Video demonstration is below. Crunch Network: CrunchBoard because it’s time for you to find a new Job2.0

Museum 2.0: Hierarchy of Social Participation - 0 views

  • Level 4: Individual, Networked, Social Interaction with Content (Me to We with Museum) This is the level where web 2.0 sits. Individuals still do their interacting with the content singly, but their interactions are available for comment and connection by other users. And the architecture promotes these connections automatically. For example, on Netflix, when you rate a movie highly, you don’t just see how others have rated it; Netflix recommends other movies to you based on what like-minded viewers also rated highly. By networking the ratings, tags, or comments individuals place on content, individuals are linked to each other and form relationships around the content. A successful level 4 experience uses social interaction to enhance the individual experience; it gets better the more people use it. The social component is a natural extension of the individual actions. Which means, perhaps, users are ready for…
  • As always, comments are encouraged—and in this case, strongly desired as I work on refining this content for the article.
  • using web 2.0 to promote civic discourse in museums, I’m developing an argument about the “hierarchy of social participation.” I believe that, as with basic human needs, experience design in museums (and for other content platforms) can occur on many levels, and that it is hard to achieve the highest level without satisfying, or at least understanding, those that come before it. One of the impediments to discourse in museums is that fact that designers want to jump straight from individuals interacting with content to interacting with each other. It’s a tall order to get strangers to talk to each other, let alone have a meaningful discussion. And so, I offer the following hierarchy of social participation.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Level 5: Collective Social Interaction with Content (We in Museum) This is the holy grail of social discourse, where people interact directly with each other around content. Personal discussions, healthy web bulletin boards and list-servs fall in this category. Healthy level 5 experiences promote respect among users, encourage community development, and support interaction beyond the scope of the content.
  • So how do we level up? The good news is that moving up the levels does not require new content. At all levels, the interaction and participation can occur around pre-existing content. A lot of museums top out at level 2 or 3, imagining that offering people heightened opportunities to interact with content, or to create their own content, is enough. Granted, I’m not sure if social engagement is the goal for interactive designers. But with side benefits like deeper connection with the content, greater appreciation for the museum as a social venue, and heightened awareness of other visitors, it deserves a place at the drafting table.

Getting Started with Firefox extension - Diigo help - 1 views

  •  Feature Highlight: Highlights Diigo saves the day with "highlights". Highlights let you select the important snippets on a page and store them in your library with the page's bookmark. Let's try it. Just open a page, maybe one of your old-school bookmarks or one of your new cat bookmarks, and find the information on that page you actually care about. Select that important text. Got it? Okay, now put your hemet on, 'cause this might blow your mind! Click the highlight icon on the Diigo toolbar. It's the one with the "T" on a page with a yellow highlighter. You will notice that the selected text gets a yellow background. This means that the text has been saved in your library, and as long as you have the Diigo add-on the text will be highlighted on the page! How's that for easy?   Now you've highlighted the text. It will appear in your library within the bookmark for the page it is on. Go to your library and you can see how it works. If you're not sure how to get to your library, just click the second icon on the toolbar (Diigo icon to the left of the search bar) and then select "My Library »".
  • Sticky Notes on the Web What? I can put a sticky note on a web page? How? Oh, that's right! Diigo. Just right-click anywhere on the page and choose to "add a floating sticky note". Type up your note and choose "Post", then move the note anywhere on the page. You have to type a note first, before you move it where you want, otherwise there's nothing to move!

Diigo in the Classroom « Learning Literacy - 0 views

  • Before class on Tuesday, I have never heard of the program Diigo.  When Professor Wolf mentioned that, it was a way to annotate online documents right on the web page.  He also explained how it is interactive, that you can read other annotations posted by others and others can read yours.  At first, I didn’t see myself ever using this after this class.  I find it easier to read documents once they are printed out rather than right off the screen.  I cannot concentrate when the documents are on the screen and I feel better writing notes in the margins with a pen and highlighting.   After using Diigo on the readings for Thursday, I realized that I might be able to use this tool in a classroom with students.  I would not use it for anything lower than the fourth grade, but it would be a great tool to integrate into lessons.  For instance, a teacher could set up a group in Diigo and have the students all join an account. Then for different lessons, such as a science lesson on the layers of the earth, the teacher could use an article or web page that reinforces the lesson.  The students would then go in and read the article and comment using Diigo.    I think students would benefit from this activity for several different reasons.  I think the fact that it is on the computer they would find it fun and different from reading out of a textbook and answer questions.  I also think that since it is interactive, the students can comment on one another’s thoughts taking the pressure off that comes with face-to-face conversation.  In addition, if this is done in the classroom using three or more computers, it is away for the children to interact but keep the noise level down while other students do independent work at their desks.

DEMOfall 2007 Preview - Companies to Watch at Evsion Lab - 0 views

  • Josh: Diigo is a web-based tool for what the company is calling "social annotation." It lets users highlight, annotate (via sticky notes), and clip information from any web site. What I think makes Diigo potentially very useful is that you can share your annotations, clippings and bookmarks with a group. For students and professors I think Diigo could help groups organize their thoughts and research for team projects. Marshall reviewed them a year ago for TechCrunch.
  • Marshall: I like Diigo a lot, but I haven't kept using them in the time since I first reviewed them. The new Webslides feature looks like it could come in handy and the groups looks solid
  • I don't know how many more features this product needs. There are already so many! I think they need to focus on finding distribution channels for what they've already built.
