This article states that the shifting jobs from India represents almost 30 Billion dollars in loses. It's interesting to read that when one may think that the jobs shift form North America to Asia, but in reality they also shift from different countries in Asia

    This website was used by an entrepreneur I know. Basically it is like the marketplace InnoCentive mentioned in Chapter 5 of The Shift, however it is based around logo design. Basically entrepreneurs put out a call or contest for the logo you would like, with an explanation of what its being used for, who the audience is etc. Then graphic designers place in entries. Once the contest is over you choose your favourite one and they get paid the prize. It costs $29 to start a contest and then whatever you are willing to pay for your prize. My friend who used it was very successful, and as soon as I read about InnoCentive it made me think of this! I can image there will be more websites like this in the future

    On page 216 of the Shift, Gratton mentions that the internet is increasingly being used to help entrepreneurs find funding for their projects. This made me think of something I had seen in passing a couple of times, called 'crowdfunding'. Crowdfunding refers to sites that allow you to raise money for a certain idea, company, start-up etc. These sites charge a fee (usually percentage of money raised) and provide certain services to customers (PR, coaching etc). Some sites allow only certain types of ventures (creative ventures, Bands only, T-shirts only, non-profit/charity only), while others are open to everyone. Sites typically offer a "Keep-Everything" policy (where you keep the money regardless of getting the goal), or an "All-or-nothing" policy (where you only get to keep the money if you reach the goal). This article provides some of the top platforms for crowdfunding, however in my preliminary research I was able to find sites that were not on this list such as "GoGetFunding" and "Patreon" and "GiveForwards". It seems that these sites are popping up all over the internet! Definitely something to keep an eye on!

The technical term for this type of interaction is called 'Informational Interviewing'. Often the most current information about a career field, especially in a specific geographic location, may not be available in print or online resources. This resource gives great information on informational interviewing. It gives benefits of informational interviews as well as steps in conducting an informational interview along with samples of what one can say or questions one can ask.

    This article by Charles Fishman echoes more of what Friedman calls 'Multiple Identity Disorder' in a flattening world. We as individuals are trying to sort out "the tensions among our identities as consumers, employees, citizens, taxpayers, and shareholders." This article pulls the covers off of Wal-Mart, revealing some of the business partnerships they have had with companies like Vlasic, Lovable, Levi Strauss, and MasterLock- and how those companies have lost huge profits, and in the case of Vlasic, gone bankrupt because of their partnership with Wal-Mart. But, says Fishman, for suppliers, "the only thing worse than doing business with Wal-Mart may be not doing business with Wal-Mart". In a flattened world where one company has so much power, suppliers have few options if they want to stay afloat. Wal-Mart is taking its business to foreign companies at an accelerated rate. And as consumers with lower incomes due to the off-shoring of jobs, we also feel that we have little choice: we have to buy the cheapest brand. Seems that the Flattened world has also flattened individual choice.

    I recently attended a parent student council meeting and the principle indicated that there are a lot of schools paying attention to the works of Dr. Tony Wagner in order to enhance innovation skills within the high schools in Ontario. He also has a book called "Creating Innovators". Really interesting, think I am going to purchase it to read over the holidays!

  • Attachments can also sometimes get messed up when the receiving computer tries to decode the information in a different way than your system coded it.  In other words, there are many reasons to learn how to create effective formatted ASCII resumes.
  • Tips for ASCII and scannable resumes: do not try to use bold, italics, underlining, or special fonts as these do not appear in ASCII text (try using capital letters for emphasis instead); keep things simple do not use tabs (use the spacebar if necessary) don't use bullets (you can use asterisks or dashes if you want) left justification is standard; use hard carriage returns to insert line breaks and make sure lines are no longer than 65 characters in length use nouns instead of action verbs to describe your skills and experience consider putting a skills/keyword summary section near the beginning proofread to make sure everything looks right after saving it to ASCII text

  • If in doubt, call the company and ask
  • If you are sending attachments, consider putting only your resume in an attachment and putting your cover letter in the body/text of the e-mail message.  Whatever you do, don't leave the body of the e-mail blank.  Otherwise the end result will be something like sending a photocopied resume; it will look like you though extra effort wasn't worth it (you don't really want a job with them; you just want any job).
  • The reason for this is that all information submitted gets stored into their database for easy retrieval later, automated e-mail replies, etc.  Much of the information you will enter can be copied and pasted from your regular word-processed resume but do read the forms carefully and be sure to provide the information they ask for.

      Interesting that it specifically addresses the Gen Y. Does this mean Baby Boomers are exempt? I'd say Baby Boomers will also experience the career carillon since they are living into their 90s and are good to work for another 10, 20 or more years. Then there's Gen X who are still fairly young and have half of their careers left still - they will probably experience career carillons. Also, what about Gen Z? Will Gen Z have these career curves, or will Gen Z be even more fluid in their careers?

      This is a good point. I have many other priorities and interests in my life. I am able to handle 9-5, five days a week, but realistically I would prefer either fewer hours per week or to work one of the weekend days so that I would have a free day during regular work hours.

      I like some routine, but I get bored if my analytical and creative sides are not engaged. If I have the time to take care of myself and keep my energies levels up, then I am more open to spontaneity. I like being able to roughly make my own schedule, but I like other people setting up a few times where I need to be doing X task.

      This is a good point. This is when tracking expenses comes in handy to figure out how much one is spending, and then adjusting from there. Personally, when I started tracking my expenses, I was a little shocked by how much I spend, and it made me spend less because I was more aware of my spending.

    This is a video from a TV show called The News Room. ** There is some bad language. A girl asked the panel "Why is America the best country in the world?" I feel his answer epitomizes the idea of a shift. A lot of what he says reflects on how our economy only cares about money and making the most profit and not the person anymore. I know this is not the typical article we reflect on, but I feel we can benefit from listening to this. We might be Canadians but we can listen to this and understand. Our education is not the best; we do not have the most well-off middle class. We can all learn from this. Jillian
