Scientists are blogging and communicating now, with an article in Time Magazine talking about how these scientific bloggers are changing the face of science. Having Access and being able to communicate digitally are becoming part of everyone's required knowledge base.

This website is a conglomeration of scientists who are blogging and writing.l They respond to research journals and bring forth "hot topics." In science. Time magazine has written an article about this site and how they are changing the face of science. Blogs are becoming integrated into all aspects of the world and knowing the method of writing effectively there is important.

[NYT Magazine, 5/25/08]. Examination of why people "overshare" their personal information on the internet through the eyes of a 20-something woman who compulsively blogs. This is a fruitful article to seed a discussion of how teens express themselves digitally and the importance of privacy and self-regulation. It could also be paired nicely with the Youth Privacy site ( previously bookmarked by another group member) for discussion in a digital citizenship class.

This week begins National Bullying Prevention Month, and CNN's "AC360°" along with Cartoon Network, PEOPLE Magazine and CNN.com are exploring the problem of bullying and cyberbullying in depth. What is bullying? Why do kids do it? What can be done to put an end to it? Take a look at CNN's week-long coverage of the issues.

More evidence that kids do not understand what is private in a networked society.
Police have used a law intended to keep pornographic magazines away from children as the basis for arresting four middle-school students accused of using cell phone cameras to snap nude photos of themselves and exchanging the images. Your students should know that exchange of nude photos [another form of cyberbullying] falls under "child pornography" laws and if prosecuted to the full extent of the law, they could spend time in juvenile hall and be forced to register as a sex offender for the rest of their life.

MISSING, from Web Wise Kids, is designed to SHOW rather than TELL children about online safety. It's a fun and positive way to teach children how to avoid danger on the Internet. The interactive software adventure tells the story of Zack, a kid in Vancouver, Canada who forms an online friendship with Fantasma. This guy is so cool - he has an online magazine about beach life in California and he sends Zack great stuff, like graphic arts and software. Little does Zack know that he is a predator. After Zach agrees to go to San Diego to be with Fantasma, players work with a detective to find and rescue Zack and arrest Fantasma. Available both as a home edition and a school edition. [Windows and Mac OSX versions available]. Note: Local middle school science teachers have successfully worked this program into their science curriculum since solving the game involves researching and collecting clues.

KINSA has partnered with Nelvana to create a 16-page cyber-safety comic featuring characters from YTV's hit show, Grossology. The original comic takes kids on an adventure into the underworld of crime (and slime!) while reinforcing KINSA's Surf Smart™ principles. The comic will be distributed in POP! Magazine in spring 2008 to over 300,000 students in Canada, and is also available for download here.

Ypulse is a media platform for youth media and marketing professionals, founded in May of 2004 by journalist Anastasia Goodstein. It provides news, commentary and resources about commercial media for teens (teen magazines, websites), entertainment for teens (movies, video games, television, music, books), technology used by teens (cell phones, instant messaging, hardware and software), the news media's desire to attract teens (newspapers, cable news), marketing and advertising (targeting the teen market) and non-profit youth media (highlighting organizations' efforts at promoting youth voices in media and creating media by and for youth). Anastasia is also the author of Totally Wired: What Teens and Tweens are Really Doing on Line.

Spotlight magazine showcases the projects and people funded by the MacArthur Foundation's Digital Media and Learning Initiative and covers the intersections of technology and learning. We go beyond the research to show how digital media is being used in classrooms and programs around the world.

Chatroulette allows people around the world to see each other and chat via text or audio. Users can click "next" to skip from person to person, never knowing what the next image will be. But this unregulated freedom presents serious safety concerns for children. Violent and sexually charged images frequently turn up on Chatroulette, according to Sam Anderson, who chronicled his experience on the site for New York Magazine.

My Pop Studio is a creative play experience that strengthens critical thinking skills about television, music, magazines and online media directed at girls. Users select from four behind-the-scenes opportunities to learn more about mass media: My Pop Studio strengthens media literacy skills, promotes positive youth development, and increases knowledge about health issues. Highly interactive creative play activities are used to create an online community that guides users through the process of deconstructing, analyzing and creating media. Video segments, flash animation, media deconstruction games and quizzes, and moderated blogs make the website lively, fun and educational. My Pop Studio was created by a team of researchers and media professionals at the Media Education Lab, located at Temple University's School of Communication.
