this would be an interesting activity for students to do in their own context.  If you're blogging with students or creating any kind of online digital content, have them create their own digital footprints and then analyse what they've created this past year.

The online study of 1,454 adolescents ages 12-17, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, tried to gauge the differences between school bullying and cyberbullying and found that young people underestimate the bullying of their peers, particularly when it takes place online.

Harvard researchers studying the ethical sensibilities of youth have found that most young people are devoid of ethical thinking or consideration for others when using the web.

In response to the recent rash of teen suicides related to cyberbullying, Perez Hilton appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week to say that he will be ending his crusade to bully people online. Hilton made a name for himself as a celebrity blogger, making nasty comments about celebrities and attempting to "out" gay and lesbian stars. This week begins National Bullying Prevention Month, and CNN's "AC360°" along with Cartoon Network, PEOPLE Magazine and CNN.com are exploring the problem of bullying and cyberbullying in depth. What is bullying? Why do kids do it? What can be done to put an end to it? Take a look at CNN's week-long coverage of the issues.

It's important for parents today to realize they are creating an online dossier for a human being that will be with them for years to come. It's worth considering what kind of digital footprint or online history you want to leave for your child. When your child is a teenager or adult, what will they make of the information you are currently uploading now? 5% of babies under 2 have social media profiles, 7% have email addresses, 81% of two-year-olds have a digital footprint. The irony here is that Zogby International just published a survey of parents that found 90% of them think their kids share too much information online and social networks aren't doing enough to protect them. Stolen accounts-caused by aggressive phishing attacks and distribution of malicious programs to collect passwords-have become a plague upon the Web. Spammers want them so their messages can get past spam filters. And crooks, who often lock out the true owners by changing their passwords, use them to find and get inside financial accounts or to impersonate the owners and weasel money out of their friends.

Carla Franklin, who believed she was cyberstalked, is claiming victory in a case involving harassment when defamatory comments about her were posted online. A Manhattan judge has ruled that Google must release the names of the online tormentors who made the crude comments about Franklin, a 34-year-old businesswoman.

Erin Schoening's first grade class at Gunn Elementary School [Iowa] is one of the first in the Council Bluffs Community School District, if not the nation, to use Facebook as a teaching tool, recapping lessons and "synthesizing concepts" while using the social media site to provide updates for their parents and others.
