  • Doctors knew the donor had encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, when they harvested the organs. However, they didn't know rabies was the cause.
  • In this most recent case, the donor was experiencing "changes in mental status" before he died, according to Dr. Matthew Kuehnert, director of the CDC's Office of Blood, Organ, and Other Tissue Safety. He said doctors in Florida tested the donor for various causes of encephalitis, including West Nile Virus and herpes, but did not test for rabies.

    The part that is most concerning is that the doctors knew the patient had encephalitis (granted not all causes of encephalitis are infectious in nature) and decided to donate the organs anyway.

  • Likewise, restriction enzymes are a dangerous defense, because they can chop up the distinctive stretches of DNA in a bacterium’s own genes. It avoids attacking itself by capping those sequences in its own DNA, so that the restriction enzymes can’t reach them.

  • The bacteria hold onto an invading virus’s DNA, so that they are now prepared for a fresh attack. And over time, bacteria can build up little libraries of these virus barcodes.

    I thought it was interesting that antiviral medications should be administered within two days of infection in order to be effective. This really outlines the need for more effective treatments since this is a very short time frame and there is an increasing resistance to these antiviral therapies in general.

    I agree that it is wise to broaden the scope of infection control to custodial workers, since they would often be in contact with several of the inanimate objects in the room. This is really shown when they were unable to find the superbug on the "hospital workers' hands." Did they test everyone?
