Productivity Guild - The online community for macOS and iOS productivity tools and reso... - 2 views

  •
Signed up for this to be entered for some freebies from Kourosh Dini, an author, whose books and blog I've read in the past. He's a psychologist and productivity guru, who writes books, among other things, on how to maximize your use of OmniFocus. We'll see if I use the Productivity Guild much. I have to watch out for the trap of getting so caught up in reading about productivity that I become unproductive. :)

Mevo--do you use it? - 5 views

  • Emile Burgess

We used it at my former congregation, Trinity, Caledonia, WI. We used it for live streaming the sermon portion of the service and occasionally the full service. We also used it for occasional Bible studies or special presentations. I'd say it works better for smaller venues. At Trinity, we had the camera on a mic stand in front of the front pew. It wasn't as high-res as I would've liked, but it still was worth getting the sermon out on our Facebook pages. You can see some of our videos here: https://www.facebook.com/trinitycaledonia/
You might join the Mevo Customer Group on Facebook. There are a lot of people from churches that post on there what they're doing and questions. There's also a WELS guy (name escapes me) on there who's using it in his church.
If you want to ask more questions, feel free to email me. emileburgess@crownoflifemn.org

Here's a post I made in the Mevo Customer Group in which Tom replied: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MevoCustomerGroup/permalink/1341740179223406/

Potent LastPass exploit underscores the dark side of password managers | Ars Technica - 2 views

  •
LastPass has 90 days to fix the potential exploit before ProjectZero releases the exploit to the public. The Mac Geek Gab Podcast recommends switching password managers if LastPass has not "patched the hole" in half the time (May 1). I personally have LP on all my devices, having paid money for the mobile version. 1Password seems to have a stronger reputation from the podcasts and bloggers I follow, but the desktop app was much more expensive than LastPass. Perhaps I'm getting what I've paid for. :(

Mac Power Users #352: Workflows with Ian Byrd - Relay FM - 0 views

  •
Interesting episode with a former teacher, now presenter for other teachers on teaching the "gifted and talented" student. The episode isn't so much about the education end, as much as the technology behind Ian's work. Website looks very useful for teachers. http://www.byrdseed.com/

Free Online OCR - convert scanned PDF and images to Word, JPEG to Word - 0 views

I sometimes want to copy and paste some text from a PDF that wasn't scanned with OCR (e.g. some essays in the Seminary Essay File). I take a screenshot of the paragraph and upload the screenshot file here. (Screenshot-selection-to-file shortcut on a Mac is CMD + SHIFT + 4.)

Amazon.com: Send to Kindle for Mac - 1 views

Bought a book today in epub and mobi formats, but not from Amazon, so it didn't sync to all my kindle-app devices. Found this. I'm guessing there's a version for Windows too.

It's 'digital heroin': How screens turn kids into psychotic junkies | New York Post - 2 views

  • If you have to, demand that your child’s school not give them a tablet or Chromebook until they are at least 10 years old (others recommend 12).
  • Developmental psychologists understand that children’s healthy development involves social interaction, creative imaginative play and an engagement with the real, natural world.

Dear parents: Here's how to protect your kids from porn. You're welcome. | Blogs | Life... - 1 views

  • Most social media, including Instagram, Snapchat and others have no parental controls
  • The truth is, you could hide a search for inappropriate things, and I would never know. But, I love you a ton, and I know that looking at those pictures can really mess with the way God has wired us as men. I want you to know that you can be honest if you ever bump into these kinds of things. It’s every guy’s battle, and I’m in this with you.” This creates an open dialogue, and everything that we keep in the light is easier to deal with. Sin can’t survive in the light.

The article is mostly an interview with Covenant Eyes, who makes accountability software and recently produced a free e-book for parents. I downloaded it to check it out and ended up reading the first four chapters just today. Chapters are short and include discussion questions. For a non-WELS resource, so far they do a fairly good job of being gospel-centered/grace-driven. Looks like a great resource.

Almost spent $30 on Pixelmator when a highschooler of mine told me about Pixlr. Great webapp for photo editing. My favorite/most used tool: the magic wand + delete button to make sections of my images transparent.

How to Make Your iPhone or iPad Read Kindle Books to You - The Pastor's Week - 1 views

Great tip. Macs have this feature too in some Apple apps (Mail, Pages 5, etc.) under Edit > Start Speaking. There also a chrome extension called "read & write" for this on the web. Article makes a good point that this is better for "lighter" fare. :) Also, hadn't heard of this blog until now, and will now be following it.

TinyCat - Online Catalog for Tiny Libraries - 0 views

Not sure if I've shared this in the past, but it may be a nice solution for classrooms, school, and/or church libraries. $3/mo. for 1,000 or fewer titles, which most church libraries would fall under.
